Holidays:  What are you doing for Halloween?  |

So I love Halloween. It is one of my favorite holidays. I have always made chili. When my daughter was little, we would dress her up and take her trick or treating. Then when she got even older, we would still go with her, but we parents would trail behind and go to our town’s FAMOUS Main Street trick or treating. It is like the movies! It has gotten SOOOOO huge, people drive hours just to come.
But now my daughter is a senior in high school, so this year it is all over. We still decorated the house and the camper for Halloween, and always will. My daughter still loves the holiday, too, and she and her boyfriend are dressing up. I am sure a few more high school kids will show up here, as well. We also baked Halloween shape cookies, and will do our jack o lantern this afternoon, roasting the seeds.
Every year, though, people would show up after trick or treat and end up staying for chili. It then became a tradition. So now, even though no one trick or treats, friends are coming over, dressed up, to eat chili, and watch Halloween movies. It will be fun, kind of an “old person’s Halloween”, I guess. It is a NASTY, blustery raining day, so I am happy I don’t have to go out with young ones for candy!
I wasn’t planning on doing the whole thing tonight, but our friends kept asking, “what time is annual Halloween dinner tonight?” That made me happy. :)
What are you doing? Do you do anything special if you do not have young kids or trick or treaters coming to your door?

Hi Nicole,
Halloween was never really a big day for me growing up, because we lived in the country, my parents only took us in town a few times, the last time was when some teenage boys tried to steal our candy. I am happy to report they did not get mine, I bent my moms curtain rod hitting them with it. I did however take my daughter and it became her favorite holiday. She is now 28 and I still do a little decorations for her. I still live in the country so no trick or treating here. But I do wish everyone a

Nicole, I am a Halloween loving person too!! My tradition, that started with my Mom, is to carve a big pumpkin for the porch and while carving it, scoop out all the meat to cook into a fresh pumpkin pie for Halloween dessert before taking to the streets to Trick or Treat. I also have my porch decorated with some fun vintage paper decorations from my childhood, lots of pumpkins for a spooky path, and my annual witch costume ready to wear. It is 88 degrees here this afternoon and thunder storms are predicted for late afternoon and evening in front of a cold front heading down from the north. I sure hope it doesn't rain while the kids are trying to Trick or Treat and spoil all the fun!!

WE celebrate Halloween for several days. We kicked it off with an ATV ride and a cabin stay. Then for three evenings my husband carved a pumpkin and we would light it---tonight we have three to lite. We watch a scary movie each evening and have a little wine. Tonight he is making pumpkin chili for us. We have had such good creepy weather the last few days---mist and spooky weather and tonight heavy rain---the best Halloween weather ever. I used to dress up like a witch every year but since I have become an old holler witch for real---I don't need to do that---LOL. Happy Halloween to all. We have only had two trick-or-treaters here in 21 years. Yes---our neighbors children came down the one and one fourth miles one year. A surprise for sure.

We still have little ones, so we went trick or treating. We didnt last long because it was very cold outside. But they really had a blast and I enjoyed watching them!

I doubt there was a cuter group of trick-or-treaters in the country. Glad they got to enjoy. It was raining here---some places are going to let kids trick-or-treat on Saturday. That is wonderful as I felt sorry that kids couldn't go because of the weather.

Barbara, I love your Halloween tradition!! It sounds like such fun and pumpkin chili is a new idea to me and I bet it is delicious!! Our Halloween was very hot and humid and the kids were sweaty and Moms were carrying masks and other parts of costumes!! LOL!! But the kids were happy and they are looked so cute in their costumes. I loved the older kids costumes because many of them make them by hand and they are clever and unique. It is always fun to see what shows up at my door each year and this year was just as interesting as the last. Our neighbor around the corner, had a big old yard party in the front yard and grilled hot dogs, passed out candy, and had some of his friends bring their instruments for a live band. The place was hoppin’ and everyone was enjoying the neighborhood celebration. He did the same thing at the Fourth of July and had a big water slide for all the neighborhood kids. People brought sides to share and after dark they did a lot of fun fireworks. I love it that my neighbor has done these simple gatherings because it offers a wholesome and special vibe to our neighborhood and a sense of community!
Krista , your children are getting so big and they look adorable in the costumes!!
Nicole, I love your Halloween traditions and it is not only a compliment that friends still want to come over for chili, but it is a testimony to the goodness and importance of traditions that foster community and a sense of friendship and trust. Your tradition has roots and speaks to a deeper need for all of us to keep family and friends close and support each other and celebrate the goodness of life together. It sounds like your daughter is going to continue this into her adulthood and many of her friends and future connections were delight in a Halloween celebration !

Karla!!! I laughed out loud when I read your post! Good for you, my dear farmgirl friend, for beating that teenage boy with your mother's curtain rod! Lol! Shame on him for trying to take your hard earned candy! Proud of you for standing your ground!
Regarding Halloween, we travelled four hours away that day for my sons final away game for soccer and then drove back, twelve hour round trip, was a long day, but worth it! These moments are precious as they continue to grow up at warp speed.
Usually, we all hit the pumpkin patch for fall photos, pumpkins an festivities, and then we all dress up and trick or treat together... I still dress up as a witch every year! Easy go to and always ready to go! Black hat with large purple boa feathers around the brim, love it! This year, we have our Charley, our tenth month old chiweenie bundle of love, we bought him a hot dog outfit, so he will now be joining us trick or treating each year! Life is too short not to have fun!
