My Mom always used cast iron skillets, griddle, cornbread pan, and dutch oven to make meals for our large family. I am fortunate enough to have them all today. One of my favorite memories, however, was the first time my Girl Scout group made "Pocket Stew" for our cookout badge at summer GS day camp. Everyone was asked to bring one vegetable in their pocket on our cookout day and our leader brought her huge cast iron dutch oven with a package of ground beef. For our badge requirements, the split up into 4 groups. One gathered and started the camp fire, one washed and cut up all the veggies, one group actually put everything in the pot and cooked it, and think group was the clean-up crew. This meal was very popular during my years as a Scout , but this first time was wonderful. We all enjoyed making such a simple meal together and there was nothing left over!

Thanks MaryJane and Winnie for hosting this fun giveaway again. I have the Cast Iron Cookware Cookbook so I am not entering. Just wanted to say it's a must on any FarmGirl cookbook shelf. One of my favorite recipes is cooking a roast with black coffee.

I'll throw my name in if no one else is - but if there is another cast iron lover - please choose them over me! You will probably be horrified to hear that my cast iron skillet is currently rusted - and needs a lot of love and care! I tend to reach for the pots and pans that can be run through the dish washer. Maybe the book would motivate me restore my cast iron and to season it more often... No cast iron memories here - except for rusted frustration.

I already have the book so don't sign me up, but I want to share that I made an apple cobbler thing in my cast iron dutch oven. I put my apple pie filling (from MaryJane's recipe) on the bottom then topped it with some biscuits that were topped with some cinnamon and sugar. I'm not a camper and don't do a lot of cooking over a fire. I put it at the edge of the pit but the fire was a little too hot. The edges were a little too done, but the center sure was yummy!!!

Our cast iron gets daily use. Once when we were camping I made a pineapple upside down cake for DH's birthday. I used a frypan with the handle cut off inside the big dutch oven (keeps things from burning over campfire coals and it easier to clean). I had forgotten to plan ahead about how I was going to get it out of the dutch oven when it was done. I ran around the campground borrowing vise grips to get the pan out, flipped it over onto a big plate, and it came out perfectly. The birthday party was a success. Another time we were at a big group potluck and had three dutch ovens stacked on top of each other. Stew and cornbread. Then there was the time we were camping at 8,000 feet and I had a beastly migraine. DH had invited a bunch of people for breakfast (even without a headache I am not a morning person). I knew there was something about baking powder and altitude but my pain-befuddled head just couldn't quite remember so to be sure I increased the baking powder. Everyone raved about the mile-high biscuits and showed up at our campsite for Sunday breakfast every time after that. My nickname in that group was Biscuit Queen. Anyway -- those are my cast iron stories. I probably don't need a cookbook; I think we got it figured out pretty good :-)

Hi Winnie, Thank you for such a wonderful and fun giveaway... I don't have allot of memories growing up with cast iron, my mother never used cast iron. Ironically, I purchased two cast iron pans for myself several years ago, and the first time I really used them was two years ago when my folks came to visit. My dad taught me to make his version of his favorite frittata AND he taught me how to clean and season the pan afterwards. A favorite memory of mine, as my dad has since passed away to cancer. So, those two cast iron pans I have are super special and I will continue to use them and season them as he taught me and I will treasure that memory with my dad always.

My mother never used cast iron either but way in the back corner of the cabinet under the stove was a cast iron fry pan that was her mothers, she got it a a bride in 1906. I claimed it when Mom passed along with her mixing bowl that was used so much that the glaze is worn off inside.

Thank you for the beautiful cookbook. Unfortunately I cannot post photos with my cellphone. I did make garlic smashed potatoes so far and my husband loved them. I love cookbooks and will love adding this to my collection. Thanks so much.
