I'm cooking black-eyed peas with salt pork and cornbread tomorrow. Black-eyed peas for luck. What's your New Year's tradition?

Diana, thanks for reminding me about mustard greens. I'll throw a handful or two of my dried mustard greens into the pot with the black-eyed peas. Greens and peas are good cooked together.

Well, dang it all, we've checked everywhere this week, and there's not a black eyed pea to be had either dried or canned. I hope that doesn't doom me to bad luck all year. . . . yikes!!

Did you try the frozen section too Jean? Last year I waited too long but this year I think with 2021 being what it was EVERYONE wants to see a better 2022!!! I wish I could send you a can!! I just heard another tradition. Friends from WV pop a silver dollar in their cabbage for luck!! I bet you have one of those!! ;D

It's sauerkraut at my house. I'm not sure I've ever had a black eyed pea - are they as good as the green ones?

I like sauerkraut but never had it for New Year. Black-eyed peas have a earthy taste. I eat a lot of dried beans and black-eyed peas are not in my top 10 favorites but they are good. I have heard that people outside of Texas and the south feed them to their cows.

I will be cooking black eyed peas, in a little bit of pepper bacon, along with some sautéed Kale and roasted Turkey wings. There will also be a small batch of cornbread to go along with dinner as well.

Jean, black eyed peas are a southern thing and you live in the Pacific NW so the myth of bad luck doesn't apply out there. Are there any specific traditions out in your neck of the woods?
