I am currently reading Don't Sweat the Small Stuff... by Richard Carson, Ph.D. It has short to the point chapters. He says we need to lower not raise our tolerance to stress. Raising our tolerance levels just adds stress to our lives. He, also, says we should allow ourselves to be bored sometimes. We have to much stimuli in our lives. We should take some of those times of being bored to relax and to eliminate some of the stimuli. Another thing he writes that I like is "...the purpose of life isn't to get it all done but to enjoy each step along the way and live a life fill with love..." We rush around thinking we can get everything finished but when we die our "to do box" will still be full. There will always be unfinished business.

Hi Girls, I've heard some about this book. I think he gives some very good advice. I see in my own family the need to constanstly keep busy. Daugher is running every evening with one child or the other. Has worked all day and will not go to bed until everything is pick up at home. Fixes a nice meal every night. Some of this is good, but when does she ever take a breath! She wares me out just hearing what she has to do. You know maybe even though we haven't all read this one yet we might discuss, what do you do or how do you get yourself to slow down? I do have a tendency to go sometimes until I just can't go any further. How about you, is there something special you do to get some quiet time just for you?

My daughters too! I think todays moms are more stressed out than ever before!!I am not sure when, especially here in the U.S. we began to get so crazy with our lives. I think we are too gadget focussed maybe? I honestly am not sure!I am not sure how to manage my own time either. And then health issues don't help either. Right Brenda? Linda

One thing I like to do is light some candles and play some soft music while taking a soaking warm bath. Working on a cross-stitch piece can be relaxing usually. Sometimes I get a hankering to put a puzzle together or just finding time to read a book that I can escape into helps. For the last couple of years, my husband and I get away for a long weekend at least a couple of times a year. We, also, go on a date to a movie, occasionally.

I do that as well. As I try to settle in here, I'm trying to go back to the things I loved to do and gave up a long time ago. Life just got in the way! I am knitting again. It has been a blessing as I have an injury that keeps me from walking too much. I want to go back to needlepoint as well. But, I think that is kind of our clue-we seem to let 'life' get in the way too much anymore! People have always been busy, on their farms, ranches, etc. Yet, life was good and they enjoyed things. Not sure when or how we made that different. As farmgirls we will find our way!!

You know, long ago people were very busy taking care of the land to supply their supply of food for the whole family. They didn't get bored because there was always something that had to be done. Now a days, things are just so much eaiser on us. Take for instance doing the dishes. We rinse them off and pop them in the dishwasher. Washed and dryed!! Viola!!! No going out and carring in the water and putting it on the cook stove to get it warm. Standing there washing and making sure we had rinse water and drying. Of course I don't think I want to go back to that, but we keep saying we need more time. Which a big portion of times is wasted on foolishness. So actually we have too much time on our hands. When the old timers were finished with their dayly chores and had a good healthy meal, a few quite moments for the ladies to do some hand sewing and maybe sharing in the message reading for the day, they were ready to go to bed and get the rest they were going to need the next day. Now we sit around just looking for things to fill up our time. I really enjoy to just sit with no tv or radio on and read. I will find that I am really relaxed and totally in to my reading. Quite is usually what I need. HUGS~~~Brenda

Well girls I agree that too much stress can kill you. I had several heart attacks at work and the last time they took me out by ambulance, I made up my mind that 62 was the magic number for me. All of the reports and threats of what would happen if you missed a scan or whatever just got to be too much. I ask my boss one time, how much paper work was involved if I died on the job? She just shuddered and said just don't go there. I said, Well I won't be the one doing it! And since I have retired I haven't had near the stress level that I had while working. I make my To Do List and if I get it all done great, if I don't well no one is going to write me up for it. And the good fairys will leave it for another day. And my health is so much better.
