Cookbooks. For my 75th birthday I gifted myself four books.

Authentic Mexican by Rick Bayless - Still deciding on which recipe I want to make first.

660 Curries by Raghavan Iyer - I have made my first curry which turned out rather well if I do say so myself. The curry cookbook has pages of blends and pastes which is what I like to make. I made MJF Indian Blend which I really like and use a lot. I never thought about it being a curry blend.

Lidia's Mastering the Art of Italian Cuisine by Lidia Bastianich - I made her spaghetti sauce and it's so good.

An Irish Country Cookbook by Patrick Taylor - it should be here tomorrow. Looking forward to this one because I am half Irish and it also has short stories about Irish country life.

They all sound like really wonderful cookbooks!!! I am slowly adding to my cookbook collection... as we study a country, I buy a cookbook for it so that I can have authentic recipes... as so much on the internet is tweaked to have that cuisine's flair, but is "Americanized". I will keep those cookbooks in mind as we get there! Right now we are studying Thailand... next is Japan, then Korea, then China...

I have a bunch of cookbooks, I haven't used in so long I need to get them out and go through them.
Shannon, you are really enjoying the ones you have and using them for each subject you study would really be a great way to learn more about the countries you learn about. How neat!
Sara You have some good cookbooks, I remember some of those chefs when I saw them on TV. They made some good meals.

Well enjoy!

Darlene, Lidia's book is really fun because she is cooking dishes out of it on her current PBS show. It's like taking a cooking class -- watching her with cookbook in hand.

Yea Lidia is good to watch. I don't have TV so haven't seen her in years. I found a good one on Facebook though his name is Pasquale. He makes his own sauce too.

Oh Sara, I never thought of putting cookbooks on here ... I do love to read/look through cookbooks! Don't tell anyone but I love to buy cookbooks and farm books, chicken books and non fiction and .... lots of books!

Hello, my name is Carole and I'm a bookaholic!

Thank you for posting your thoughts on the cookbooks. Looking forward to reading what you have to say about the Irish cookbook.

Bonnie, what a great bit of info on you! Farmgirls are amazing and so talented!

I love a book that has lots of colour pictures and beautiful graphics. The following are some of my recent purchases.

Welcome to the Farm: How-to Wisdom from The Elliott Homestead by Shaye Elliott - Makes me want to buy a homestead!

The Made-from-Scratch Life: Simple Ways to Create a Natural Home by Norris, Melissa K. - this one has no pictures and no graphics ... it has a great review on Amazon ... I have to sit and read it from page to page .... not as motivating as when there are lots of pictures and graphics.

Kitchen Creamery: Making Yogurt, Butter & Cheese at Home by Hill, Louella - Yea, I plan on making cheese one day ... and butter! I need to find me a place where I can buy raw milk. Great pictures to look at!

Happy Hens and Fresh Eggs: Keeping Chickens in the Kitchen Garden, with 100 Recipes by Signe Langford - great book! Love looking at all the beautiful pictures. So wish I could have chickens .... as you know we had to get rid of ours. Sigh! I can look at that book over and over and never get tired!

Pure Soapmaking: How to Create Nourishing, Natural Skin Care Soaps by Faiola, Anne-Marie - Another book to add to my soap collection - great graphics and pictures. I hope to soon start making my own soap!

I'll stop here because it could be a long post. But these are a few of my favourite ... Except Made from Scratch NO pictures or graphics! I grab a cuppa, okay often it's a glass of wine, I sit in the living room, wood stove cranking .... enjoying dreaming about a farmgirl life!

Cheers!

Carole - I will have to check some of those out! What great suggestions! Have you looked at https://www.realmilk.com/real-milk-finder/ to find raw milk in your area? They don't always have everything in the area listed, but it might be a good place to start looking! For the Kitchen Creamery - does it say if you can use goat milk???

Shannon, thanks for the link.

There is one Keeseville, about an hour from me. I do buy their yogurt at the coop. I didn't know they sold raw milk.

This morning at the grocery store I bought two magazines. You may wonder why I am writing about magazines on a book thread. When I pay $9.99 plus tax for a magazine it is a keeper and I will use it like a book.

Canning & Preserving from the publishers of Harris' Farmer's Almanac.

Have already found a recipe I want to can - bruschetta in a jar.

BH&G' Cooking with Fresh Herbs. A recipe I want to try is pork and hot pepper hash with cilantro.

I am looking forward to many of hours pouring over my new mag-books planning what I will can or cook.

Well, as I'm mentioned a few post above, I am a bookaholic. Here are my recent purchases.

Bread Revolution: World-Class Baking with Sprouted and Whole Grains, Heirloom Flours, and Fresh Techniques by Peter Reinhart - I love this man. Any book by him is amazing. I'm slowly getting all my tools in order to start baking artisan bread with a good crust. I've been baking breads since my early twenties. I am looking forward to using sprouted grains.

Little House Living: The Make-Your-Own Guide to a Frugal, Simple, and Self-Sufficient Life by Merissa A. Alink - I do enjoy looking at pictures! Lots of great information. Reading it makes me want to go out and buy all the ingredients to make my own soaps etc.

Small Victories: Recipes, Advice + Hundreds of Ideas for Home Cooking Triumphs by Julia Turshen - I have mixed feelings about this cookbook. Not sure why but I somehow thought I was getting a book that talked about cooking during the depression - victory gardens .... Totally not that! I don't even know what made me come to that conclusion. I will take the time to look at the recipes and write more about it once I get passed my self disappointments!

The Back in the Day Bakery Cookbook by Cheryl Day and Griffith Day - Lots of lovely pictures and pleasant to read. I haven't tried any of the recipes but they do look delish. I'm thinking I need to order her other books. I do love the idea of a bakery in town. Our town has nothing .... small business are a dying breed. It saddens me ... I guess that's why I like to look at that cookbook and imagine what it would be like to have a thriving small town! So sad to most people go for cheap as opposed to what is good for you. I would much rather pay $2.00 for a muffin that was made with healthy ingredients than $.50 for a fast food muffin that is laced with chemical and fats.

Well I guess I'll stop for now! I do have a couple more books coming! I did pre-order Mary Jane's latest cast iron cookbook

Oh and I'm off to Barnes & Nobles on Saturday (3 hour drive from my house). I'm sure to purchase more books! lol

Sounds like some good books Carole,

I have gotten to reading some real oldie books My boss at school gave me. They are in the age of Nancy Drew and Hardy boys but these are Tom Swift Series, These books are more Science fiction where the main person Tom Swift Jr. in an 18 year old that invents and builds his inventions. They range from space ships with odd ships that can grab things in outer space all the way to submarines of sorts that can go all the way to the bottom of the see to equipment that Tom swift and his friend can wear and walk from where he lives to the Atlantic ocean. Old and crazy but grab you at the first page. I love it.

Carole, that's quite a lineup of good books. I'm interested in the Bread Revaluation cookbook. Let us know how you like it and if you would recommend it for a new bread maker like me.

I too am a book-a-holic! Most of the books I buy are for my children for home schooling, however recently I have picked up a few for me. My most recent purchases have been:

- The Mama Natural Week-by-Week Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth by Genevieve Howland - a GREAT resource, stock full of information!!!
- Cooking for Friends, by Gordon Ramsay - I despise his mouth, but love his culinary talents!!! This cookbook is full of delicious sounding recipes that don't have a bunch of obscure ingredients! well... some of the recipes have ingredients that I just shake my head at, but for the most part I am thoroughly looking forward to making a lot of the recipes... I will have to change up what fish I am going to use though!
- Alchemy of Herbs: Transform Everyday Ingredients Into Foods and Remedies that Heal by Rosalee de la Foret - LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! I cannot say enough about it! The recipes are easy enough to repeat and explain the benefits. Sure happy with this purchase!!!

Oh, oh, oh I forgot to mention the following books:

The Hands-On Home: A Seasonal Guide to Cooking, Preserving & Natural Homekeeping by Erica Strauss - I'm trying her basic cleaner recipe using orange peels and vinegar. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Gardening with Chickens: Plans and Plants for You and Your Hens by Lisa Steele - Nice pictures of chickens! Her recent book elaborates more than her last chicken book (which I do like - I'm all about nice pictures) It has a nice layout too!

Catch you later! Cheers!

Sara, will do!

I just received my oven stone. I ended up buying it from King Arthur Flour because it was made in the US. I just do not trust anything made in China. I do need to cure it (bake it in the over at 500 for 25 minutes).

Life "should" settle for me soon and I'll take the time to bake my first sprouted grain bread!
