I was going through my badge book and came up with an idea. Mama hen likes it so I hope everyone else does as well! To earn the beginner level of the farmgirl grammar badge (under the each other section) you need to pick a word of the day and write down it's meaning, for 2 weeks. I thought it would be fun to post the word and it's meaning here and then after 2 weeks (or 14 posts if we can't get on every day) a different person could take over. That way every one that wants to can earn the badge. What do you think?

ostensible adjective | ah-STEN-suh-bul

Ostensible is used to describe something that seems or is said to be true or real, but is possibly not true or real. In other words, it is plausible rather than demonstrably true or real.

mavourneen noun
[ muh-voor-neen ]

darling or dear

I have a feeling if I said "hey mavourneen" someone would think I'm saying "hey, good morning!" At least that's the first thing that popped in my head when I said it out loud :)

gloaming
[gloh-ming ] noun

twilight or dusk

I like the explanation given better than the definition:
Gloaming is the poetic term for twilight, when the sun dips below the horizon and the world turns dusky. It’s an Old English word that's perfect for capturing the romance of a fading sunset.

Gloaming conjures Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky for me even though I don't think he ever used it there, it would fit in so well among the gyres and gimbles!

Same as Wanda on hearing "mavourneen" used in a song; Finnegan's Wake by Dropkick Murphys which was my introduction to "brogue" (Irish/Scottish accent or a shoe from the same region), "hod" (v-shaped trough on a pole for carrying bricks, mortar, or coal), "craythur" (slang for whiskey), and "shillelagh" (walking stick or cudgel).

I just youtubed Finnegan's wake and didn't catch mavourneen until I saw the lyrics below the video. It's going to take a couple times of listing to it to catch on to the accent LOL!

A word from my notebook I love is
Dendrophile-"A dendrophile is someone who loves trees and forests, deriving joy and peace from being surrounded by them. The term is derived from the Greek words "dendron" (tree) and "phile" (lover), according to a post on Instagram. It captures the profound connection and admiration one can feel towards trees and wooded areas,"
That would SO be me.

I have a lot of nature, artsy and spiritual words that I've collected because they are unique. Love them

Dianna, have you heard of Shinrin-yoku? (aka forest bathing... don't worry, you keep your clothes on!) It is wonderful when disconnected ancient cultures arrive at similar ideas; like they're tapping into some deep truth.

And Heather, I agree that DK Murphys are unintelligible without subtitles!

I am surprised that 3 of these words are actually familiar to me. Gloaming, from a song, dendophile and boondoggle. I was sure I wouldn't know any of them.

Another favorite, just newly learned but have always felt this is
Frondesence
Frondescence is a noun that describes the leafage or foliage of a plant. It can also refer to the time or period when a plant is putting forth its leaves.
Origin:
The word comes from the Latin verb "frondescere," which means "to become leafy, put forth leaves,"

Every spring I gaze out over the trees and marvel at the beauty of the different greens that show, the new leaves! Green is one of my favorite colors so funny how spring green can make my heart flutter! ;)

In spring, the frondesence of the deciduous trees ia a breath taking sight to behold! ( not as breathtaking as fall but still)

amaranthine
[ am-uh-ran-thin ] adjective

unfading or everlasting

"Amaranthine means "everlasting," connected to the mythical amaranth flower that never wilts. With Greek roots, this word symbolizes something unfading"

This one sounds poetic to me. I don't read much poetry though - maybe that's why I've never heard this word before :)

Heather I have heard of the flower but not this word. Plus I did not know the flower never wilts. This one is my favorite so far, and it does sound poetic.
