I love this smell, after it rains. You can smell the earth, everything just smells so much fresher.

I love that smell too Debbie. Makes you wonder why they feel the need to give it a name?
It kinda takes away the heart of saying “ I love the smell of earth after the rain”.
Still is interesting that there is a name for just about anything.

These are great!

ululation = onomatopoeia?
petrichor-- I love this smell too, although when I tried to get it as a synthetic candle fragrance it stunk, maybe the rain smells different other places. Also love smell of damp creosote? sage? in the desert chaparral, but I'm still trying to figure out which plant makes that smell so I can plant it at home.

I haven't been on here for a couple days so I'm going to back up and say Hippo WHAT?!?! That is an insane word! Who would come up with something like that? I love serendipity (when it happens and the word). And I didn't know there was a word for it but I love petrichor too. I don't think the name fits though. It kind of sounds like a word for something that doesn't smell so pleasant LOL! I've never been to the desert, but you have my curiosity peaked, Christine! I like the smell of the sage that grows in my garden :) Wonder if it's similar to what you smell in the desert?

Phosphenes:
The light and shapes one sees when eyes are closed are known as phosphenes. They are a remnant of what we saw when our eyes were opened. They exist for only a moment before disappearing.

This is an interesting word, and I did not realize it to be so. I will have to try it and see.

Sorry I was so busy I forgot my words. I will post 2 tomorrow. I went to my happy place today, The Beach so my mind was there:D

Gallimaufry:
is an unusual but delightful word for “a hodgepodge; jumble; confused medley.” It was borrowed into English in the mid-1500s from Middle French galimafree, a kind of stew or hash, apparently concocted from a mishmash of ingredients.
Another fun and funny word.

I love that the French had a name for that. Over this past winter, a friend and I had gotten in the habit of making soon-to-be-compost vegetable gallimaufries in our crock pots and reporting back how many meals this "perpetual soup" had lasted for.
