Who has seen this? We just finished watching it and we are both amazed! Lake Chad is GONE! There are so many things that are happening to our planet and most people don't even give a single thought about it....We are going to watch it again when the kids are asleep and we don't have to half listen and half play with kids....it's unbeleivable what is happening to our home and it is US that is the problem!!

Please see this if you haven't....it really is a matter of life or death.

Did anyone hear Paul Harvey talking about how the Gore mansion's electric bill is over $1300 a MONTH? I think his message is great, but I felt saddened when I heard this.

la luna .. i watched 'the view' today .. and one of the ladies (don't know all their names) said she thinks al gore might surprize us all and end up in the running. i don't know that much about him as far as 'foreign affairs' is concerned .. and lord knows we need someone 'wise in the ways of the world' .. but he just might make great strides toward saving this world for us all if he were running things!

@Sarah - if you go here: http://www.climatecrisis.net/ you'll be able to order it, and find a lot of other useful information as well.

@Ricki - that is frustrating, but I always try to look at it in terms of being able to affect at least one person, because who knows where that will lead?

@Frannie - *lol* sadly, I think Al's already put the kibosh on any candidacy rumors, but we can always hope, can't we? ;-)

Laluna ~ We went to see it because my daughter's 8th grade science teacher gave them extra credit to go see it. She thought it was quite an eye opener!

By the way ~ she was the ONLY one in the whole class who went. Grrrr

Here's a great article on how people-of-faith are watching this movie, learning, and incorporating steps into their personal lives to make a difference. It looks like we are bringing the process full circle as awareness begets action. Good read and food for thought.

I *finally* borrowed and watched the film last weekend - what an eye-opener! At about the half-way point, I was so sad and ready to hit the 'stop' button and let it go at that, but I made myself sit through the entire thing since I've heard so many people say that it does give you hope at the end, and it did. I was so inspired by what I saw in fact that I'm going to see if I can work it into my curriculum (I teach middle school - grade 8 English) as a media literacy/film criticism mini-unit. My students are already so keyed into the notion of global warming, so I think to see it actually presented like this would inspire a whole new generation, which is how I think we can hope to see change happen.

My comments may make more sense if I mention that this is the heart of oil country, which is how the Bush's made their money.
In the last couple of years, while the paychecks of the rest of the country got smaller every time they fueled up, the bonuses and dividends of a lot of people here got bigger.

If we all would be good stewards of what we have been given, act responsibly and stand together to make a voice for what is right the earth would be a much better place. And in my opinion the entire government should be fired and we need to start over. The founding fathers gave everything the had and worked voluntarily. Do you think we would find a politician today that would be willing to make that sacrifice?????
Destiny~ Posted - Jan 11 2007 : 05:29:28 AM
I haven't been able to watch the entire program yet. I was actually surprised to find it here since this is where Bush grew up and things are very skewed here compared to everywhere else. When oil prices were going up, people here were buying large SUV's for themselves and diesel trucks for their 16 yr olds. While the housing industry in the rest of the counrty is dropping off, we have a housing boom and most are building McMansions. It's insane but it helps me to better understand why Bush does some of the things he does.
Btw, I'm planning to downsize my home and I drive a Prius. I'm considered an oddity in this town so sites like this one are my lifeline to reality.

Thanks, Clare. Always wonderful to hear your voice too, darlin'.

I try not to meddle in the forum too much but ya'll are talkin' about something i think we should all be talkin' and doin' somethin' about. Time and complacency are not luxuries we have anymore, if we ever did...

I should say that i'm only speaking for myself and am not trying to represent the farm in any way. Well, 'cept for that last paragraph about joy, that's pure MJ & Carol. I tend to be a bit moodier than the joy sprites i work with.

Love the Niebuhr quote by the way. I read once that he influenced MLKjr more than anyone else with the exception of Jesus & Gandhi.

This is fascinating reading. It's wonderful to see so many peeps energized by this debate. I've been quiet for awhile but feel like I want to speak up.

First, I like Mr. Gore’s agenda. It is an agenda because it is proactive rather than passive. It’s constructive, rather than destructive. It’s big vision, not boxed in. And for once we have a unifying theme that’s not based around war.

To say that government shouldn’t be involved is to deny that government has had a role in where we’re at right now. The form of government we have (worldwide) sponsors violence as a solution and pollution as normal and inevitable. Yes, I believe in personal responsibility and choice, but we have to transform government so that it is transparent and responsive to the common good, not just to the criminally greedy or the peeps looking so far beyond heaven on earth that they can’t wait for heaven in the sky.

Do the greedy and warlike have children? Do they ever think seven generations or even one generation ahead? I have difficulty comprehending what makes these guys tick. Is the payoff really that good?

And, although I’m definitely going to rustle some feathers here, what will the pious say in response to St. Peter when he asks them what they did to nurture God’s greatest gift? God poured heart and soul into the earth’s creation, so do you really get a free pass to heaven for complicity with a scorched earth attitude?

Gore is a hero. He’s bright, articulate and he’s brought attention and the possibility of solutions to the attention of a country usually too focused on American Idol to wake up and look outside (or inside). He’s challenging us to tune into the ultimate reality show. It’s not just his agenda, it’s our agenda.

That said, we just had a wonderful discussion here in the design hut about it and the girls and I came to the insight that despite all the rancor, divisiveness and despair over this issue, our most powerful tool to deal with this is to stay positive and cultivate joy, because we’ll never make it by tying ourselves into knots or indulging in war.

Thanks to Clare and Tasha for starting this discussion.

nature (besides God) is the one thing that keeps me grounded. When I get feeling "crazy" w/ the negatives like pollution, extinction of animals, hungry people, war etc. then I NEED & MUST go outside, take a walk, breathe deep & meditate in nature. I don't ever want to lose that. I need it to regroup & get strength till the next thing comes along. Even if it's only in my small garden in spring & summer, it's what makes me whole again. We shouldn't be getting warmer anymore then we shouldn't have hungry people in this world but... we do and we must continue to always fight it w/ love, kindness, support and respect. I for one know how hard that is to do sometimes because the subject makes me so crazy & angry but anger doesn't solve it. Persistance, willingness, opportunity and plain old caring does. Enough of us care & we all can do something everyday to help if we look hard enough.

And yet, visit someplce like Australia....and it remains virtually unchanged.......I was there for a month in 1989 and will forever be ebchanted w/ the culture and the land itself.

Pity for the polar bears and critters in Africa. What's the statistic? An animal goes extinct every couple minutes?????

We live in a very complex world it is fragile and demands we take care of it

The pollution aspect really made an ampact on me when I lived in the desert....nuthin' but clean air there....the closer you drive to LA, you start to see this yellow haze. Pretty gross

I'm so glad to be living in the country where for the moment our closest neighbor is 1/4 mile away and I can roam the fileds and woods and not hear anything but leaves and critters.

I purchased the dvd and when I come across someone who has not seen it yet I lend it out. I had to stop the move many times because I would just start crying. I remember in 1975 I started the first eco-club in my high school and they just about laughed me out. I managed to get a group of 9 students to join in picking up trash, talking to local groups and walking with signs in our hands on the weekend. I could not believe how much the general public did not care, not much has changed. I have been called all kinds of names for keeping my mind and practices on planet earth while other drive Hummers and throw fast food wrapers out their window in front of our farm. I too wish that at least this movie would be played in the schools for they are our consumers of the future and it does not seem like parents are teaching this to them. After I had dried my tears it only made me more determined to teach when and where ever I can the need to take care of our one and only planet. These issues are not politcal they are mankind. I am excited to know that this group/site is willing to take on the work of loving our planet. Hugs to you all.

One of the really valuable things about this forum, and about all of us farmgirls, is how we can all come together and discuss issues in the world without hanging onto the "labels" that are so prevalent in our society - we aren't our political parties or anything else in it's entirety - except for ourselves! It's so easy to think that we know what someone else thinks simply because they belong to a certain "group." We all have this incredible amount of wisdom and experience within that only WE have - amazing, isn't it! I think that the labeling and "digging into positions" might just be what got our world into the messes it's in...

XOXO, Libbie

not all of us feel that education and information are gloom & doom, and while yes, we will burn up in end of times (I believe) it doesn't mean we can't try to prevent & take care of the planet for our children & their children. About the feelng helpless thing.....that's my whole point

GOVERNMENT should be left OUT. If we ALL pitched in and did what we could, we wouldn't have to rely on the upper ups to do ANYTHING and they could leave us alone

The government shouldn't solve all our problems just as they should have their hands in so many other issues

The think globally act locally thing has its place if we all did a little think of the greater impact

But not everyone holds the same sets of values Think of it in these terms Aids is a huge problem...it could be IRRADICATED if folks practiced abstinance/safer sex, dropped the drug habits and were not accidentally given taited blood accidentally

It all boils down to lifestyle and weather or not we make a conscious effort on our own to CHANGE! Same applies to environmantal issues BUT, I want to make the choice myself rather than having some huge government entity make the choice for me. Get my point??

The earth IS heating up. It goes through cycles every million years......or someting like that we just happen to be on it this time.
Remember the ice age???? that was a cycle too brought on by a metiorite. Still a natural cause

And for us Christians, this earth is going to go away in a firey inferno anyway and we won't be here! First time was a flood, next time... BLAMMO!

Last point most of these doom and gloom shows/publications get you by stirring up all kinds of worst case scerarios. They cause unnecessary panic and knee jerk reactions Feeling moved to do something is great.....mass panic and freaking out solves nothing

Do your part within reason and find the balance
