Posted - Jun 13 2007 : 8:36:56 PM Guardian and herding dogs require a great deal of training and the training has to be continued over the course of their lives. If you do get a Great Pyrenees make sure that you are getting a dog from a working background with hip certifications. A good breeder will have more questions for you than you will for them. I guess my point is that getting a guardian dog is not necessarily an easy fix for your problem. Donkeys will fight dogs and other canine animals but are not a guarantee that your flock will be 100% safe. I once had a neighbor who had a donkey to protect his sheep and goats and he still had occasional losses to coyotes.
Stray dogs (even those with owners) are a big nuisance. We have had several damaging visits from a neighbor's dog ourselves (chickens, not sheep) and I understand your frustration. Some dogs just have a really high prey drive and unfortunately not everyone understands the responsibility of dog ownership. I myself have a dog with a very high prey drive and learned a hard lesson when she got out without my knowledge one day, but we do fine with supervision appropriate to her nature.
Do you have a barn or other shelter you might move the sheep into at night? Other than accidentally locking an opossum in with our ducks one night, keeping our birds in well reinforced buildings has at least prevented night time losses. I like my birds to free range because of the better egg quality so occasional day time losses are just a hard part of life I'm learning to accept. Most can be headed off if someone is home all the time.

Posted - Jun 12 2007 : 10:29:27 PM Annie S. Thank you for your input. I would love to put the dogs in the groung. There not mine. We saw them and they both have collers and tags onnn. But can't catch them. I love animals so much and it really is not me talking when i say that first line! But They attacked again befor i could even take the staples out from the first attack. We are looking for a great Pyrenees dog right now. So if any one know a breeder in Ca let me know.
Luzy, Yes i am close, i live in Lake County. About 1 hour away..

Posted - Jun 12 2007 : 4:42:10 PM Kristy - once dogs get the taste of blood from a sheep or other animal, you can't stop them from trying to attach the sheep again. It's just an inbreed thing with them and some breeds are worst than others in this area. It happens with other animals as well. Is there any way you can put the dogs in a big kennel to keep them away from the sheep in the fields? Otherwise, the best thing to do is get rid of the dogs altogether to save your sheep. And then see about getting different dogs who are more house happy and not running into the field after the sheep. If you have any other questions, let me know and I'll forward onto my friend again. Good luck to you.

Posted - Jun 11 2007 : 8:06:10 PM Kristy, will pass on the problem you have with your dogs to my friend and see what she would suggest. She has two small dogs that don't pose a problem with her sheep, but maybe she has some ideas to share. Will get back to you as soon as I can. I'll be seeing my friend tomorrow, so hopefully by tomorrow night I can get back to you.

Posted - Jun 10 2007 : 11:41:32 PM Hey Kristy..if you have the space buying a donkey or llama as a guard animal would be cheaper than more vet bills I bet. I hear they work great. I don't have the space and so far no problems that way...it is scary though...sheep are so vulnerable!!

Posted - Jun 10 2007 : 5:40:24 PM Aunt Jenny, Yes my sheep are California Reds (down to 5 and maybe 4 we'll see)... I also have 5 Americana chickens, 4 furballs as I like to call them. Oh yes 2 daughters and 1 husband.
Annie S, My question/problem is that i have two dogs attacking my sheep. I have lost one on the first attack, and they came back yesterday and did lots more damage! Animal Control is involved as well as the Federal trapper. I just wanted to know if anyone has any back-woods tricks, I could try to use to stop this! In the last two weeks I have spent $800 at the Vet!(Ouch!!!) Anyone got an idea? Kristy |
