Hi Kristy and welcome. I love sheep and even collect sheep things, but I don't know much about the real ones. :-) But I'm sure there's someone around here that can help you.

Welcome Kristy!! I love sheep..right now I have just two Icelandic ewes..not much room here... Are your sheep Calif Reds? I think they are so pretty from the pictures I have seen.
I think you will like it here..there are some gals with alot of knowledge about sheep..and just about everything else too..I learn something new each time I come here!

Hi Kristy!

Sheep and dogs, eh? Sounds like you are going to fit right in! We have chatted about a lot of things down in the BarnYard Buddies thread! I hope that helps.

Looking forward to getting to know you better here on the forums!

Aunt Jenny,
Yes my sheep are California Reds (down to 5 and maybe 4 we'll see)... I also have 5 Americana chickens, 4 furballs as I like to call them. Oh yes 2 daughters and 1 husband.

Annie S,
My question/problem is that i have two dogs attacking my sheep. I have lost one on the first attack, and they came back yesterday and did lots more damage! Animal Control is involved as well as the Federal trapper. I just wanted to know if anyone has any back-woods tricks, I could try to use to stop this! In the last two weeks I have spent $800 at the Vet!(Ouch!!!) Anyone got an idea? Kristy

Hey Kristy..if you have the space buying a donkey or llama as a guard animal would be cheaper than more vet bills I bet. I hear they work great. I don't have the space and so far no problems that way...it is scary though...sheep are so vulnerable!!

Kristy, will pass on the problem you have with your dogs to my friend and see what she would suggest. She has two small dogs that don't pose a problem with her sheep, but maybe she has some ideas to share. Will get back to you as soon as I can. I'll be seeing my friend tomorrow, so hopefully by tomorrow night I can get back to you.

Kristy - once dogs get the taste of blood from a sheep or other animal, you can't stop them from trying to attach the sheep again. It's just an inbreed thing with them and some breeds are worst than others in this area. It happens with other animals as well. Is there any way you can put the dogs in a big kennel to keep them away from the sheep in the fields? Otherwise, the best thing to do is get rid of the dogs altogether to save your sheep. And then see about getting different dogs who are more house happy and not running into the field after the sheep. If you have any other questions, let me know and I'll forward onto my friend again. Good luck to you.

Annie
