I think your right.. Probably what catches my eye too..
I Love these type of bags for carrying things around..
Bigger things.. especially projects that I'm working on..
& i always think i want to use this style for my purse..
But it doesn't ever work for me.. I'm such a bag lady that I end up cramming it all as full as I can get it.. THEN i can't ever find anything in it! Not if I'm really going to use it as a 'Purse' purse..
I need a divider or pockets or something.. otherwise everything just gets lost for me..
But i LOVE this design for bringing things along with me to work or the Dr. or something.. to pick at.. like making Yo-yo's.. or some other project that I have going on..
Or even a snack for work!
Perfect! I'd hate to loose THAT down in the PURSE too!!

Yep, Kathie, that's the barkcloth bag. Very popular drapery and upholstery fabric during the 50's. So many different patterns, and that bag is so great!
That's what I like the most, I think, is the way these bags are "unstructured"...very feminine!

The Fabric doesn't have Pretty or Vibrant colors like yours do..
Mine looks like my grandmothers Curtains or something..!
But the style of it reminds me of yours Patricia!
& I think my handles may be Bakelite even... !
I thought it was a great find!

You know whats funny.. I just posted a while back a bag I found while 'thrifting' a VERY similar bag.. made of old Vintage Fabric..
Remember? Jonni... I think you may have even said something about the name of the fabric.. I think I posted it under one of my 'Nancy jo Jr' finds since she's always such a great thrifting inspriration for me!!

Oh my. When I arrived home last night, the only thing in my postbox was my incredibly beautiful Russian bag from Mme. Patricia! Stunning. Absolutely Stunning. So much so, that the bag's first outing will be to the Burlington Antiques Show next Sunday, April 20th, with fellow farmgirl friends, Miss Wilma, Miss Bee Haven and Jessica (Kydeere)....Patricia, you should have put some business cards in it so I could advertise for you when, no doubt, someone says, "My,my what a gorgeous bag...where on EARTH did you get that one of kind item?"

Hi ladies ~ Nancy's bag has arrived! And Sue's is going out later today!! (The Russian Bag. Did anyone figure out who Sacha is?)
Stuie and I dug deep and found these beautiful fabrics and I've let loose some of the women in my head. If anyone would like a bag using any of these fabrics, let me know. Some of them are fabric I can't find anymore. Please note that the photos do not do any justice. There is an abundance of gold in all of these that doesn't come through in the photos. Also there are no lines in the fabric as there are in the photos. Sigh.

I've also pulled out a hat pattern that I've been wanting to try. It's an old cloche pattern from the 1930s. What fun!

So sorry for the delay in logging in--Jus was very sweet and brought home the film "Becoming Jane" and we've watched (and I've cried) the whole night!!!
I'm sooo excited, Patricia!!! It turned out beautifully, blurred photo and all!!! Boy Howdy am I going to turn heads all over town!!! Now I have to lose some weight to look as wonderful as my bag!

OK, girls, I've been trying to get photos into this thread and this is the best I can do.
It's the Russian Bag, Sacha's bag, and the photo does it no justice at all. This bag is gorgous with a lot of gold trim and a beautiful "jewel" at the top, which you can't see very well.
Sacha's story is: It's 1919. Sometimes Sacha has nightmares, which she is ashamed of having at 15 years old. She never remembers much of them just running, practically being dragged down a long hallway. And the sounds of screams behind.
Of course, there are good dreams too, of playing with her sisters and a brother, of Mama's warm hand and Papa nearby. Where are they now, she wonders.
Her new Mama and Papa love her her very much. There is plenty of food and warm blankets on cold Russian nights and she is content, except for the dreams, and the name "Anastasia" which she cannot forget. She even has a secret embroidered box in which she keeps her treasure, the beautiful stones that were found in her hand.
Yes, Mama and Papa love her very much. She is their little princess, they say..."
The "jewel" on the bag, represents Sacha's beautiful stones. It is a chandelier crystal I picked up in Paris.
Stuie has picked out the most gorgeous fabric from my stash for my Milan bag! We couldn't find anything more appropriate at the fabric store (which, I think, is the biggest in Oregon!) We did find a beautiful sunflower print for my Provence bag. If anyone wants to see it, let me know. Also, If anyone wants to see the Milan fabric, also let me know because there won't be enough for 2 bags.
Wheeee! What fun! Oh, and I'm going to have to add an extra $5 to the costs of the bags except for farmgirls. They will be $25 for anyone else. I added up the costs and realized I'm only making $2.25!

JO!! You must have read my mind. A very fashionable woman came to me yesterday from Milan, which you know, is the fashion capital of the world. Her name is Florence and she is a Miliner in Milano in the 40s...actually, she is my husband's mother and there is a very interesting story about her...but my next bag will be Florence's bag from Milano in the 40s...Stuie is going through my stash as we speak looking for her fabric...and we're off to the fabric store now. To browse....heh heh. I will also be doing bags from other women in other towns in Italy but Florence is the first from that country.
Wait till you guys see Jonni's Russian bag!

Merci, merci! mes amis!! I'm getting so much enjoyment from this project! Corinne is sending me fabric from France and AFRICA! I can see a African woman forming already. How exciting is that?
My friend Melissa in L.A. (she's the one who does some of the voices in the crazy e-cards I send - by the way, if anyone want to receive them, send me your "regular" address - they're hysterical and quite the fun on dark days) is going to "shop" them on Montana Ave. (a tres chic et expensive rue des boutiques en Santa Monica) and some other places. Fun for her, since she'll get to "play" a high-powered and a little aloof saleswoman, heh her. Now all I have to do is produce some bags!
The Russian bag for Jonni is done. I'll post the story about Sacha and a photo of the bag later today. It's so beautiful I can't stand it. A gem from my stash.
Gotta go get to work.
