Is that even how it's said or spelled? I don't know. I do know I am very nervous already and DON'T want to do it. But I am going next Tuesday at 7 am. to have it done. That way I won't have very long to think about it. But I already am thinking about calling back to cancel. I am so nervous and scared. And I will be PUT TO SLEEP! Oh my goodness, I don't want to do it. This is torture. Oh, please tell me I am being stupid and a big whiney baby right now. I may need to be slapped in the face real soon too. Yikes!

Has anyone else had this done? And why, now that I am 52, is all this stuff happening that I will have to have done. Like bone density tests and mamograms and check ups and on and on it goes. I even have to stop taking all my herbs and kambucha and elderberry syrup today. I hope I don't get the flu now. I can take Alegra though. This is awful. Oh, and not to mention the horrible gallon of yuck that I have to consume on Monday night. And plus no food all day Monday. I will be a mess! Just a plain ole mess. I am not looking forward to this at all, y'all.

I know this is nothing compared to what so many people are going through. But I am a wimp, plain and simple. A wimp!

Welcome Anna. You may want to get it at the library first, it doesn't have a whole lot of recipes, but what it has are really yummy. However, very unconventional, so I would check it out at the library first to see if your family likes it.

I tried the low carb thing too for a time. It really worked , but was a hard discipline for someone who absoutly loves pasta. Portion sizes have been significantly reduced though.

And since being diagnosed with RA, my DH has stepped up his nutrition awareness. Or actually now, is paying more attention to what he eats.

He has cooked our meals every night this week.

I'm gonna order the Phytopia cook book. I'm sure he'll find it very useful, so thank you!

Yeah I have been to good and bad nutritionists. I went to one really really good one that was free at the mall. And that doctor was very cutting edge and I learned a lot from him. Then when I was pg with dd1 my insurance required me to go to a class (cause I'm a type one diabetic) so I went and every thing the lady said was insane! For instance she said that we shouldn't eat tortillas and then proceeded to pick up a bag of tortillas that were about 20 inches across, and made from what flour. This was a class of mainly latina women....probably a main source of bread is tortillas for them. MOST mexicans/latinas do NOT eat 20 inch tortillas for one thing, most eat small about 6 inch ones they are easier to make and cook, etc. I spoke up and said that corn tortillas are whole grain and are not that high in carbs! And also they could eat whole wheat ones, and I even named some name brands of whole wheat ones that are low carb and high fiber. She was irritated at me, BUT I just thought it wasn't going to work to tell people whose main diet is one food that they can't have it, when in fact they could just choose the better option of the same food. Then she held up cottage cheese and said it was high carb too! I said cottage cheese is NOT high carb, I eat it every morning for breakfast, she then reads the label on her container of cottage cheese which was high. I then said, isn't it high cause you bought the kind with fruit goo!? In NYC they sell cottage cheese with pineapple or peach fruit goo added (no actual fruit, it's high fruitose corn syrup and flavoring!). she said no all cottage cheese was high like that. This was a three part class, so the next class I brought in my empty container of fruit goo-less cottage cheese, that was ONLY cottage cheese, no fruit goo! And it was only 4 carbs (in the class they said anything below 5 was considered ok to eat!). She was shocked, yet she was the teacher? UHG! Very irritating cause most the women in the class had just been diagnosed with diabetes while pregnant and was totally confused! And being told very wrong things! CRAZY.

But, yes we all need carbs. The reason your body loses with out carbs is you are actually not feeding your fat cells when you don't eat carbs, and then you are literally starving your body, and you go into keytosis. I have a head ache and am tired right now, but it's pretty scientific, that pretty much it's not good for any one's body! Plus I don't know about you but have you ever seen people's skin who don't eat carbs and lost a bunch of weight-always pimply and not good looking at all! A person who eats fruits, veggies, and whole grains along with a good amount of water usually their skin looks a lot better!

Ooopps. I just went back and it was 21 grams for females 50 and over. Sorry. And yep, I cannot do the high protien-low carb thing. That's just not right. You have to have carbs. I lost 15 pounds in 2 weeks. That works. But it sure screwed me up for awhile. So no more for me. I know what my body needs. I really don't trust doctors or nutritionists. They go by what they learned in med schools. When my friend found out she had diabetes I went with her to a class on nutrition. I was amazed at what they were telling these people. They could have white bread and white rice and nothing about whole grains and staying away from white processed stuff. We both didn't go back. It's just a shame what they are telling people. And people believe them. Like when I went to my doctor last Oct and she said my BP was a little high and she thought I might need to go on meds for it, I said NO way. I asked what else I could do and she told me. She is partially holistic and I like that about her. But I guess she has to first tell her patients about the drugs. And most people will just go along with it. I am not. When I had my colonoscopy my BP was down about 30 points or whatever it is. So I know what I am doing is working. Anyway, there is always an alternative.

I always went to the bathroom enough times a day as well, never experienced constipation much either. But, I can tell you I am so much healthier after raising my fiber. I still have never read that 16 gms was enough for a grown up before. That's what I have seen for a child though (10 to 16 gms). I've always read though 25-35 mostly, but have seen a few say as few as 25-30.

I haven't read those two yet. But, I did read the Liver cleanse book and it was really good.

I know that the low carb diet is not really good for any one. It's really bad on the liver. My dr has strongly advised against it. It is bad for the liver, and especially the kidneys. It can literally make your kidneys shut down. It almost did mine! I am a diabetic and every one kept saying low carb so I tried it and I got kidney disease as a result! I started eating carbs, my blood sugar went down and I began to get better. BTW, I went to a tv show recording where they were interviewing a dr who touted low carb for diabetics, and diabetics in the audience were standing up saying they still had high blood sugar the dr said it was because your body will make it when you don't eat carbs. HOWEVER that never was aired! The TV show wanted to tout the low carb diet and cut all that out of the aired episode!

Heather, I just googled diverticulosis and got all kinds of good info. As far as "moving", I am several times a day already and way before the procedure. that's why I couldn't understand why he was telling me to eat more fiber. Of course, we didn't talk about that ourselves. I think this happened because of the high pretien 2 weeks. I will never do that again. It does not agree with me. In one of the articles I read it said to sub beans for meat. I do notice when I eat meat that it hurts at first. Especially fried. So I had put on a big pot of pinto beans yesterday morning with just Safflower oil and some salt. I usually put fat back or bacon in them. So a cup a day is quite a bit of fiber. And this bread is really good. I have been making this bread for about 12 years now.

Anna, when my goats are in milk I make my own kefir. I make a smoothie every day and grind up flax to add to it. That's how I would get my fruit, as I really am not a fruit eater. I love my smooties and miss them. I could buy kefir but it's so expensive. I have to limit myself to about once a month now. But goats are ready to pop in a few weeks. So we will be in good fresh goat milk soon! I am so ready. But I am going to start adding ground flax to the bread also. And some seeds and nuts too.

Have y'all read Nourishing Traditions? And Wild Fermentation? They are both really good books about fermenting and lactic acid which every gut needs. I love these books. They are both on the counter now. I just made some beet kvass with some whey. Can't wait to eat it.

lol Anna. Now that I am used to it I can eat very large amounts of fiber. The more fiber you eat the better really. As fiber is like a toothbrush to the liver. It pushes every thing through.

I really like the book From Here To Phytopia. It's a cookbook from a RN who had a very large family history of cancer, and started doing research. She believes in eating meat, and the like but also incorporating as much veggies, fruits and grains as you can too. She has some very interesting recipes. I loved her pumpkin seed quesadillas and her fire and ice ice cream. I went to a cooking class of her's at a local hospital years ago and every thing we made and ate was very good, even though they sounded disgusting! lol

Heather...you make me laugh!! I always have to remember to take it easy. Those fiber bars really work, but I have to consume those in small amounts rather than pound the entire bar in one sitting.

It's tough when you work around people all the time and 1. don't want to pass gas all the time and 2. need a bathroom when your gut decides to rebel all of a sudden
Annab Posted - Apr 07 2011 : 03:44:38 AM
I didn't scroll through all the other posts, but did anyone recommend ground flax? It has about 4 grams of fiber per 1/4 cup serving.

Aside from the omega 3 and 6, it really gets things moving! I drink about 1/4 cup or less in a smoothie every morning and chase it with another 1/8 cup in the evenings mixed in a bit of yogurt.

Relieved to know your screening was negative!

Colon cancer runs on both sides of my family, and claimed the life of my grandfather, so at the tender age of 41, I've already had 2.

The procedure itself is cake, it's the prep I can't stand.

MagnoliaWhisper Posted - Apr 06 2011 : 9:21:06 PM
It does sound like you are getting enough. 5 grams is awesome for bread. However, where did you get the info on 16gms, I have never heard that low before.

Heather, I just read where I should have 16 grams of fiber per day. And today I went to Woodstock, Ga. where I get my succanot and where I first started my bread making journey. I read on a package of bread, which is the same recipe I use to make my bread, that each serving has 5 grams of fiber. I am taking the whole wheat berries and grinding them in my Whispermill grinder. So all the whole grain is in the flour. That's alot of fiber in just 1 slice of bread. And I eat sometimes 4 a day. I am in the bathroom at least 4 times a day. No problems there for me. I did have about a week when I was on a high protien diet that I was constipated so bad. That's where the hemeroids came from. So I will never be without my bread again. It took me weeks to get back to normal. I know this is not a pleasant subject. Sorry. And I do eat some fruit every day. ANd veggies. SO I know I am getting at least, if not more, than 16 grams a day. Thanks for all your info.

Kirstin bread and wheat berries don't really have much fiber in them. You would have to have about 12 servings at least a day of each to get the reccomended amounts.

A grown woman should have between 25 and 30 grams a day. Most bread only has 2 grams of fiber per a slice (that's the extra healthy high fiber bread! The less healthy low fiber bread usually has less then 1 gram of fiber per a slice-even many 100 percent whole wheat breads have less then 1 gram per a serving, when I say extra healthy high fiber, they have usually added some sort of extra fiber that isn't int he regular ingredients you would have at home, and those breads are usually listed double fiber or some such, most home baked breads even with whole wheat instead of white flour only have about 1 gram of fiber per a slice).

Most fruits will have between 2 and 4 grams of fiber per a serving, veggies between 1 and 4 grams. Once you start reading the grams it starts getting easier to get the amount you need. Sometimes I get in like 80 grams!

The highest fiber food out there is beans! Most dry bean type beans are around 7 to 10 grams of fiber per a half cup serving!

If you have been used to very low amounts of fiber in your diet though, it's best to add just two grams of fiber a week to your diet till you get the desired amounts you want. Otherwise you will have fire booty! lol haha I didn't know that when I made the change, and thought I was a backwards dragon for a bit! lol hahaha

A good book to have to learn what the fiber is on fresh foods that don't list fiber (fruits, veggies, beans, etc) is a Netzer book. Any of them will give you the fiber count, you can get the one that is for tracking fat, or calories, etc, they all also list the fiber. I usually get one of the older books as they are usually clearanced and usually have plenty of foods listed, as you know it's not like we get new veggies, fruits, beans, etc. Mainly they are updated yearly to include new restaurants and/or the new foods the restaurants are now serving. The book includes both raw/dry good type foods from the store, as well as many many national chain restaurants. Since I don't eat out at chain restaurants that much it's not that big of a deal to me to get one of the books that is a few years old and half the price! If you are a person who eats out a lot though then a more current book may be more important. But, like I said the basics that you would cook at home don't change year to year in the book so which version you get isn't a big deal.

Yea!!!! Good news! I'm so happy you can put that out of your mind for another 10 years! I'm supposed to eat more fiber also. I've found that I just don't eat enough to get the fiber recommended. I guess I need to do some research to find an organic fiber supplement. Any one know of one?

I just got a letter from the place I had my procedure last week. I won't have to have another one for 10 years!!!!!!!!!! It does say I have diverticulosis and that I should drink 8 8oz. glasses of water each day and up my fiber. I make my own bread from whole wheat berries. How much more fiber do I need? I know fruit is a good source of fiber. And some veggies. So I will do some more research on fiber foods.

Thanks so much to everyone. I could not have gotten through this without all your help and prayers.

Ruth, I forgot to get the gum. I sure wish I had gotten some. Are you ok? I am so glad you don't have to go back for awhile. I am hoping there will be some different better stuff to drink. I told the nurse if I do this again I would rather have an enema. She said they don't do what that drink does. Oh well.

Hi Kris, You have been on my heart all day today! We had to go to Atlanta to Dermatologist, so have been away from my computer. So glad to hear all is well except for a couple of polyps, praying they come back clear. I have a history of polyps, so I have had to go every two years. Last time I went I was clear :) - so they are letting me go 5 years this time - yea!
Did you try chewing gum or eating a mint between glasses? It really helps me.
Anyway, it's over and you did great!

Ha ha! Y'all are so funny with the jokes. I'm sure there are tons of them. Yes, I am so glad that is behind me. And I do hope there will be no reason to have to go for 10 years. And by then maybe they will have come up with a better way to clean a person out. I will be hoping anyway. I was telling my mom this would be the perfect way to keep people from doing bad crimes. Just give them a gallon of this stuff to drink. I really do appreciate and have felt all the good thoughts and prayers. Now there are others that need them.

Oh Kristin, I am so glad for you. Will be praying that those polyps are as others have said...just what grows as we age and have because of our American diet. I am proud of you for asking for support, AND going through with it. Doctor may say you have to go through it in another 5 years. By that time, the prep for that procedure may be easier. That goopy drink is awful, but it works for most people without a lot of cramping. Isn't it great to have it over? Now you are one of the professionals like us...& Katie Curic who can say that a doctor knows us in a new way.

How was the biscuits and gravy?
