Is that even how it's said or spelled? I don't know. I do know I am very nervous already and DON'T want to do it. But I am going next Tuesday at 7 am. to have it done. That way I won't have very long to think about it. But I already am thinking about calling back to cancel. I am so nervous and scared. And I will be PUT TO SLEEP! Oh my goodness, I don't want to do it. This is torture. Oh, please tell me I am being stupid and a big whiney baby right now. I may need to be slapped in the face real soon too. Yikes!

Has anyone else had this done? And why, now that I am 52, is all this stuff happening that I will have to have done. Like bone density tests and mamograms and check ups and on and on it goes. I even have to stop taking all my herbs and kambucha and elderberry syrup today. I hope I don't get the flu now. I can take Alegra though. This is awful. Oh, and not to mention the horrible gallon of yuck that I have to consume on Monday night. And plus no food all day Monday. I will be a mess! Just a plain ole mess. I am not looking forward to this at all, y'all.

I know this is nothing compared to what so many people are going through. But I am a wimp, plain and simple. A wimp!

Kris

Oh Kris,

I've never had to have one done, but know that you are in my thoughts and prayers and that I will be thinking of you. Will keep my fingers crossed that all goes smoothly and that you are through with it as soon as it begins. And no, you are not a wimp! I hate just going to the doctors, never mind having to go for a test. Most of the time, even when I have to go, I don't. The last time I did that, I ended up in the hospital for six days, so I am glad that you are taking care of yourself now. You deserve to be taken care of, dear farm girl! After all, we need you here.
love ya

They are not bad at all and the benifit outways any thing that could come up. I have had 4 at 56 years old because my Mother when I was 20 died from Colon Cancer and if she would have gotten the test might be alive today. So taking a chance and not have one is Not ok in my book.

Kristin....I will be 66 pretty soon. I just had my 2nd colonoscopy ( you spelled it correctly) 2 weeks ago. I can say, that as a nurse, I helped many doctors do them. Hundreds. Hopefully, nothing will be found, but at this point in medicine today, this is the best way to see if you have polyps, diverticulosis, a cancerous tumor or other things that may be hidden from you. You want to find out these things before something could become worse. For the 2nd time, they found a little polyp in me that left unchecked could develop into cancer. For the procedure, they start a little IV, give you some medicines to help you relax and not feel anything and before you know it, you are awake and it is over.

What I find unpleasant is the prep...drinking a gallon of that laxative to thoroughly clean you out. It works without cramping...you just need to take a magazine into the toilet and let it work. Most doctors let patients drink clear liquids the day before...nothing with red or milk...so I drank apple juice, chicken broth and had absolutely no problems. Didn't hurt me to just drink liquids. Now if your doctor doesn't want you to even have liquids, then he must have a good reason. You must also have someone drive you home, cuz you will be sleepy.

It is kuch less of a problem to go through this, than have an outcome that affects a greater percentage of olcer people. Bone density tests, mammo's...a piece of cake. I have 3 friends who are now dealing with their hair falling out because they have breast cancer. One is 34, and the others are in their 50's. They are really glad they had their mamograms. They hope to be cheating death. As we age, things go wrong...just like older cars. It is our responsibility to do the best things for our bodies, so we can progress and be around for our families. Good luck to you, and I will be having one of those things again in another 5 years. Let me know how it goes after it is all finished. :0)

I have to agree with Claudia and Diana. The prep is the worst part, the procedure itself is pretty much a piece of cake. You will not actually be put to sleep, you will be given something that will make you very relaxed and you most likely won't remember anything of the procedure itself. I didn't really want to get it done either, but on my first one he doctor did find two largish polyps. They were removed, tested precancerous, and the second one three years later came back clean. Now I don't have to go back for 5 years. If I hadn't had the colonoscopy the polyps could have at some point become cancerous and I would have been in some serious trouble. I know you can get through this. We'll keep yo in our prayers.

I had my first when I was 14. I was on that medication that is now on commericials about causing colon problems! And yup I had colon problems, but we didn't know it was from the accutane back then. We just thought I had colon cancer just because you know. Any way, they do not put you to sleep sleep, it's twilight. Much different then completely asleep. You will not remember anything, however, the drs can still talk to you, and you to them the whole time. But, the twilight state is enough where you don't remember anything, even though you really aren't "asleep". OTOH my first was done in my regular family MD's office with absolutely nothing! Not even a asprine. Believe me if you experienced them clipping things out of your colon completely awake with no pain medication you will be begging to be put to sleep. It was one of the worst things I ever experienced. My mom was in the room with me and said I turned pasty white when they started cutting and almost passed out! Because I did have the cancer (small polups) I have had to have a lot of them. When put in twilight they are great. When wide awake with nothing they are horrifying!

The only thing you will experience is sleepiness you will want some one else to drive you home, in fact will have to have some one else drive you home. And you will experience some gas. That's about it. As was said the benefits out way the few hours of uncomfortableness.

Kris,
I'm sorry you are so nervous. It's really just more of a mental difficulty, than physical. I was 8 years old when my first was done. I had a twisted bowel as a child. I was so petrified, I couldn't sleep, even after they gave me an ADULT dose of sedatives!! In the end, they decided I wasn't going to sleep, but was fuzzy enough to proceed. I got to watch the whole "event" on the TV screen. Gross, and fascinating at the same time for an 8 year old girl. I felt very little, except embarrassment. You will be fine. Claudia is right. The most uncomfortable is the prep. They not only made me drink the laxative before hand, but I was given a contrast dye enema for xrays first. Try holding that in for 20 min. I'll be praying for you, and peace through the whole ordeal.(((hugs)))

The tears I shed then, watered the flowers I harvest now.

Kris I'm 57 and have had 4 of them done, the procedure itself is nothing it's the prep that's uncomfortable. They don't really put you to sleep it's just a dose of a narcotic that puts you in a twilight sleep. The reason we have this done is so we don't end up like my bestfriend, she died at age 51 from stage 4 colon cancer with absolutley NO sysmptoms. Had she had a baseline colonsocopy done at age 50, her Dr. says 45, her cancer would have been caught and she would still be here. Make sure that you have some really soft toilet paper for the prep part you'll understand later why. You will be just fine!!!

You know, Kristin is having the same heebee jeebies that we all had. Each of you have had similar experiences to mine. Even after having several, I told very few...maybe it's the fact that it's about poop etc & that just usually isn't discussed. I was embarrassed also. I don't know, but I applaud Kristin for voicing her concerns & fears....and low and behold, you all came through, I think, with tenderness, empathy and prayers. Kristin, you may be having to prepare physically and emotionally...but you have us who will offer up some prayers and support for you next Monday night (the 28th) while you prepare. BTW, my doctor told me that I should have some baby wipes to clean my bumm, and some vaseline or zinc oxide to spread on it.

Kris the prep is the worst part. Honestly the other part you are out of it. You might feel a little gassy and uncomfortable afterwards but as the other girls have said - the benefits far outweigh the inconvenience. I have had many of them done since I was 35 - and I always feel better when it's done and I am all clear!! (pun absolutely intended)

Thanks y'all. I know it is a good thing to have done, but I have only been in the hospital 4 times ever. And 2 of those were to have my daughters. And they were all so long ago. I really appreciate all your advice. The lady that I talked to said something about being put to sleep and I said like with anesthesia and she said yes. I hope she is mistaken. She is my age and has never had one done. And she works there. Anyway, she is sending all the information so I should get it all by Sat. I am supposed to only have clear liquids the dy before and start drinking that stuff at 8 pm. every 15 minutes.

Thanks again for thinking of me.

I guess I am due too, I am 51!
Hubs had his, & this is NO lie.. We got to the hospital at 6:30 am & we were driving home by 7:15 AM. I could not believe it when they called me back & said "He is done". I went back; he was kinda loopy, & in a bathroom (tooting away, if you know what I mean). He got dressed, we walked out, & stopped on the way home where he wanted a huge sandwich. Very uneventful

Lisa, I only hope that's the way with mine. I don't look forward to the tootin' part.

Diana, I am sorry about your mother. I know these tests are very good and if things are caught early, save lives. I am just a little scared is all.

Kathy, my best friend. Kathy, who I have requested prayer for here, had colon cancer also. She had her colon removed and her large intestines. Plus they had to sew her rectum up. SHe wears a colostomy bag now and always will. It's been about 5 years now. She thought she had really bad painful hemmoroids. She went to the emergency room and was admitted. That's when they found hers. And my gyno said she felt some hemmoroids when she did the rectal exam. That's why she scheduled the procedure. So I guess it's a good thing for me to go.

And my step dad, who is also on the prayer request here, has his procedure the same morning as me. I called my mom to see if she could take me and she reminded me of Gary's. So we will be in 2 different hospitals having nearly the same thing done at about the same time. How strange is that? My daughter is off that day so will take me. BUT I WANT MY MOMMA!

I have ulcerative colitis and had my first colonoscopy when I was 38. I've had quite a few since then and have to have them every other year or so (at this point). The procedure itself isn't bad at all. The prep is the part I HATE! Make sure when you start prepping (taking the pills, drinking the stuff, etc.) you will be home and near the bathroom.

It's kind of a "twilight sleep", I guess. During one of mine I was somewhat with it and got to watch the monitor while the scope when through my intestine... Pretty interesting! Otherwise all I remember is them hooking up the IV and next thing I'm awake and it's over.

All the best to you. Karin

Kris, First, it is a very easy proceedure, you will not even know they are doing anything. They do put you semi out - you will not remember anything about it. Feels like you just had a good nap :)
I have had many done and the prep is by far the worst part. What I find most helpful is: put vaseline on your bottom as you will get raw, have some mints or chewing gum to take after drinking a glass of the "stuff" to take away any taste in your mouth, the "stuff" doesn't have much taste to me, but I like to have mint gum handy - it makes me happy! I would start before 8 pm with the gallon, if you don't, you will probably be up all night on the potty or I would be. I normally start about 6 pm and by 11 pm I'm pretty much finished.
My son-in-law died of rectal cancer right after his 36th birthday. This is an easy way to make sure you are not having any problems.
His children have to start at age 18 having colonoscopys.
I will be praying for you sweet sister!
Hugs, Ruth

Karin, I plan on being home for the most part Monday afternoon. But I will be thinking about food the whole day so I think I will go visit my friend who's coming back home Sat. after being gone all winter. She's 93 and I have missed her. So I think I will need to keep busy so I won't be thinking of food.

Ruth, thanks for your advice. And I am so sorry about your SIL. That's so sad. But so many paople have colon cancer. I am trying to talk my hubby into getting the test. He has never had one. Or my mother. And she's 79 now. She keeps saying she needs to do it.

Hi Kris,

I have had many colonoscopies. Looks like we all agree that the prep is the most disagreeable part. My father, grandfather, and aunt all died from colon cancer. I look upon a colonoscopy as a great gift to my longevity and I am so glad that the stigma surrounding them is mostly gone.

I sincerely hope you can talk your husband into having the test. The test is not beneath anyone's dignity. If you want to talk about losing your dignity, try having full-blown cancer like my father did. Horrible indignities there. No one wants this cancer.

If I can give any advice it would be to be sure to begin your prep early and make sure that you are thorough. They usually tell me that I can have a light breakfast and then begin to drink the prep liquid in the late morning or early afternoon the day before the procedure. I don't eat breakfast that day and, because I happen to have an extra long colon (lucky me) I also have a very light dinner the night before (if any). I do, however, drink the prep liquid exactly as prescribed. I am not suggesting that you start that part early. For that, follow your Dr.'s advice as precisely as you can.

It may sound harsh but I do this semi-fasting for good reason: You REALLY want your colon to be squeaky clean when they do the procedure. My husband and I have each experienced a colonoscopy that failed because they couldn't see all the way "up". When that happens--if you're lucky--you can continue to drink water and nothing more for another 24 hours (yuk), when they will "look" again. If you're not lucky, you'll simply start all over another time. Don't risk this. By the time you come out of the sedative, you are SO READY for OJ and food. Do the hard work early and it will pay off--probably with a good report and certainly with a fantastic meal.

One more thing. During the prep, they tell you (and the bottle tells you) to shake the liquid well before each serving. Never fail to do this. As unpleasant as it may taste (it's not at all bad at first and, you can certainly bring yourself to drink it later) it tastes much worse later on if you have left a lot of the medicinal parts to fall to the bottom. You don't want it to be thick at the end because that's the harder part.
Good luck. I know you'll do fine. Good for you for doing this!

Karen

I have had one colonoscopy. I thought the hype for the prep was far worse than the prep. I stayed home all day waiting for worse to happen and about 4 hours after first taking the medicine I had to use the toilet. I did not lose any sleep at all either.

The procedure was not as bad as a mammogram. I received the twilight drug as well and chose to go to sleep because free nap time is well free nap time.

Clean as a whistle I was told. No need to go back for 10 years. those bleeping mammograms now I have been doing for more than 20 years now and the platforms are still cold no matter what time of day I go.

Hi Kris

I had my first one right after this past Christmas due to some stomach issues I was having. The worst part is the prep but that's not even all that bad. The stuff does taste pretty bad or at least I thought so, mine was a lemon flavor & I don't like lemon :} I used alot of water to wash it down!!! The bathroom part, well to be honest my bottom got a little sore (hopefully not too much information) my Dr. suggested having baby wipes & even desitin handy just in case that happened. The procedure itself is a breeze & I felt fine afterwards. Good Luck!!!

Hi Kris - I just want to encourage you, too. You are NOT a whimp or whiney! You've never had this done before - the unknown can be quite unsettling! Everything the girls are saying is absolutely true, though. I want to share some humorous things about it, however. Just something that might relieve a little tension while you're waiting, okay?

I had my first colonoscopy in my early 20's. At the time, I was really concerned about my weight, so I tried to put a positive spin on the whole bowel prep deal, considering it a bonus in helping me with my weight control efforts (Let me tell you - I never had such a flat tummy as I did after that prep - I looked skinny! LOL!). A fast was also required along with that, so when the procedure was all over, I was absolutely ravenous. My girlfriend, God bless her heart, drove me straight over to the grocery store where I proceeded to buy myself a big ol' HONKIN piece of cherry cheesecake, which I THEN proceeded to suck down like a vacuum the second I returned to the car - couldn't get the door unlocked and opened quick enough! LOL! And yes, so much for the weight loss... But after the whole colonoscopy thing, I felt I had earned myself that cheesecake, dang it!

Also, I can't remember if any of the girls mentioned this to you or not, but just in case: that bowel prep lasts for a while - for about 24 hours, maybe a little longer even. So if you're going to eat anything after the procedure (and if you're anything like me, believe me, you will!), I wouldn't venture far from home if I were you. You're going to want to be sure you won't need to be close by the commode, believe me and you're not going to want to be anywhere but in the privacy of your own home when it hits. I made the mistake of visiting my beloved Grandpa in the nursing home after the cheesecake incident (My Grandma had told him about the procedure, and he was worried; so I wanted him to know I was fine!). I was stuck in the bathroom for an inordinate amount of time, receiving quite a few snickers and side-glances from the nurse aides when I finally emerged. >:( And my poor Grandpa... Let's just say, it wasn't cool. Not cool at all.

For the sore bottom, try Balneol cream. You use it when you wipe to help keep the area clean and moisturized. Very soothing. You can find it at the pharmacy, and I think you can get it both in a tube or in little travel packets (like those little handi-wipe sized packets). You just put a little on the bath tissue and wipe. If you get sore, you'll be glad you got it in advance, trust me.

To me, the procedure itself was more embarrassing than anything. I was put into a twilight state, but I honestly believe I slept through the entire process, which was good, because the doctor who was performing the procedure was not much older than I was. <ugh> As if that wasn't bad enough, he was cute, too - not that it really mattered WHAT the guy looked like, but somehow, his attractiveness made the whole thing worse. I was absolutely mortified. But a girl's gotta do what she's gotta do. I just closed my eyes and thought of cheesecake. :)

The only other thing that was awful was the gas afterward - only because there was so much of it! I was the most flatulent person in our apartment building - and my husband had a lot of fun with that at my expense. He's a real peach, my DH - his sense of humor knows no bounds. He did get coal in his stocking that Christmas... Me? I got Bean-o. >:(

I didn't have any pain or anything - I was just unbelievably hungry, embarrassed and flatulent, which was less than classy, but I survived. It was a do-able, deal-able experience, honest. I know you're really nervous about the whole thing, but this is a very healthy thing you're doing for yourself in the long run. I'll be saying prayers for you, I promise!

Hang in there, girl - it'll be over before you know it. It's going to be all right, really. :) Just try to find the humor in it - it really helps get you through! :)

Hugs to you! Please keep us posted!

Y'all are great. Thanks so much for all your thoughts and prayers.

Karen, I can't even imagine going through all this and not have it done because I didn't do something right. I would be so upset. I am going to try as hard as I can to get through this as best I can. Thanks for all your advice.

Holly, I am so glad yours went well and that there were no problems. I was wondering how long after I start will I be in the bathroom? My hubby's home for a few days. Well, I just went to pick him up from his truck. He will have to leave tomorrow evening for Kentucky. So I told him I will have to take him back to his truck about 5 or so so I can be home to start drinking that stuff. And you said it took about 4 hours for it to work on you.

Thanks, Laura. I hope mine is a breeze too. They said it would take 2-3 hours total from start to finish.

Nini, you are a sweetie. Thanks for the stories. I did get a laugh over the cheesecake. I am eating like a pig today. I fixed biscuits and gravy, eggs, bacon and fried apples for breakfast. For dinner I am going to have porkchops, potaotes and broccoli. I will have dinner anout 5 so it won't be too late. If I eat later I wake up starving. I do not want to do that tomorrow.

What all did y'all drink the day before? She said just clear liquids. I have some homemade chicken broth. And water. But I can't think of what else. Any suggestions would be great.

I have to tell about my sister. She had a small procedure done and had to be put to sleep. Of course she couldn't eat the day before. She was so hungry after and wanted to go to Red Lobster. Not a good idea. She ate a little then threw up all over the table. I do not want that to happen. I felt so bad for her.

I will tell y'all that on friday I had used the bathroom and there was some blood. But that's the only time and hasn't happened since. I am so glad I did make the appt. and hope it's just nerves. I am a bit worried though, to say the least. So some good prayers would be great right now.

As I told you I really appreciated chicken or beef broth. You can drink anything that you can see through (hence clear). You also can not have anything that is red, as it may stain part of the colon masking blood coming from somewhere in the bowel. So I had broth, made me some lemon jello, had some apple juice, loved my favorite tea, and you can have coffee. NO milk. I think the jello made me feel as though I was eating something solid (fooled my stomach anyway) and I found the broth most filling as it has protein and was soothing. I also felt that I would starve, but when it came down to it, I did not miss solids for one day.

Nini's & my experiences were a little different. Since my Mag Citrate and gallon of that wonderful stuff left nothing in my innerds, I didn't have any problem afterwards eating solids. I worried I might have a problem like Nini, so I took it easy on solids but by night, I had a great hamburger without problems. Good luck. I know you will do well!!!

Kris, I don't think you can have anything purple either! Popsicles, banana are great! I also made Jigglers out of jello - yellow, green, but no red or purple. They are sort of chewy and I enjoyed them. I also was out the day I was on clear liquids, so got a huge fountain Sprite, also had some sweet tea - You need to drink alot to keep from being dehydrated. I didn't have any problem eating after my proceedure, some people do though!
They gave me crackers and juice in recovery - they tasted very yummy :)
I'll be praying for you tomorrow and Tuesday!
hugs and prayers,
Ruth

Kris, They just had a segment on "The Doctors" about colonoscopy - Katie Couric was on and they showed one being done :) ! The lady had it done two days ago and was on the show, smiling and happy. She said the prep was the worst part - the procedure was "relaxing"!
Praying for you sweet sister!
Hugs,
Ruth

Thanks, Ruth. Hubby always watches them but we went to the dump just now. This morning the surgery center called and the lady asked alot of questions. She said yes, it is anesthesia. I would be put to sleep. Out. I am doing pretty good so far without food. I have had a big cup of green tea, a pint of turkey broth and a coke so far. I am looking forward to tomorrow about noon and a nice lunch. I wish I had gotten some jello now. I have to go to town with hubby and will go to the store and get some.

It's so cold here. And has been raining all night and sprinkling so far today.

Thanks for all the prayers. I am feeling them! I am really not nervous at all.

Kris

Kristen Gatorade is great afterward and anything on the loose bowel "BRAT" diet that is Bananas, rice, applesauce, tea and toast. Like we have all said the prep is the bad part so just stay close to the bathroom and while you are in there know that we're all thinking about you and sympathzing.
Hugs, Kathy
