Posted - Oct 17 2015 : 3:13:31 PM Julie, good idea. That seems like a good solution. We'll be spending time on new badges in the next month or so.

Posted - Jul 03 2012 : 8:51:36 PM Chelsea, I would like to see one for American History. Declaration of independence/constitution/our founders, including women patriots. To quote; those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it. A well rounded farm girl should know our founding. All the books below is history see though the founders and those who were there in there own words, not from historians who rewrite it with an agenda.
Beginners: Read the declaration of independence and the constitution.
Intermediate: Read Wives of the Signers: The Women Behind the Declaration of Independence Mary Wolcott Green and Setting the Record Straight: American History in Black & White David Barton and report to your farm sisters what you learned that you didn't know.
Expert: Read The Real George Washington Andrew M. Allison and The Real Thomas Jefferson Andrew M. Allison. Write a synopsis on what you learned from the founders own words Or do a patriotic craft project to display in your home. The badge could be the flag or liberty bell?

Posted - Dec 29 2011 : 12:46:52 PM I agree...options are needed. Also, I LOVE the natural/herbal idea. I'm currently enrolled in RoseMary Gladstar's "The Science and Art of Herbalism", and let me tell you all, there are SO many wonderful & natural remedies out there.
I think fabric/paper/mixed media journals & albums is another nice category. They're fun to make, beautiful to look at and hold lots of memories :)

I would like to see new badge ideas incorporate the fact that not all farmgirls can provide the materials for all badges. For example, if you do create a badge for music, consider those who do not have access to an instrument or cannot sing. For example, give options such as attend a concert or listen to music you have not listened to before (classic, jazz, etc.) Just an idea, because running a 5K is not in my future, and raising a large family, I don't have time for joining a softball team (badge for Let's Get Physical). I cannot run on account of bad varicose veins. I'd just like to see more options for the higher levels of badges, or for those that require the use of something we normally may not own etc.
Ideas:
Becoming your own vet, natural cures for pet/farm animal illnesses (homemade recipes shared for dewormers etc), natural recipes for dog tick care etc.

Posted - Nov 23 2011 : 09:58:27 AM I like the wild game one :) How about a fur and feather one? For those of us who hunt perhaps making something. I save lots of duck and pheasant feathers for fly tying. |

Posted - Nov 12 2011 : 09:22:51 AM two more ideas (just tossing them here for thought):
The art of Quilling: http://www.handcraftersvillage.com/quilling.htm
A nature badge in outpost or the stitching sections - making gifts and crafts from nature
Blacksmithing
Taking all our badge experiences with stocking up and going a step further - baking with all items you grow, dry, can, or raise, sharing recipes, tips, etc.

Posted - Nov 12 2011 : 09:17:01 AM Sorry CJ, I didn't mean to "pick on" your idea. Just trying to use it for examples. I have however, played an instrument and can read music. My mother sold my saxophone years ago. Maybe another idea is to provide musical lessons for a child possibly?? Just throwing out other ideas.

Posted - Nov 12 2011 : 07:01:20 AM I agree with Kristina about providing options. I am an accomplished musician, but I know from my experience as a teacher of piano, voice and music theory, not everyone is musically gifted. It's a very painful struggle for those who are not . . BUT they can read and learn music history and attend concerts, etc.

I think expanding on the Grandparents "idea" would be a great one. I work at a retirement community and nothing compares to people volunteering their time or talents with the "elderly" (I call them "Grandfriends") (They don't have to be your granparents)
Breadmaking?
Just some crazy ideas!
