Posted - Nov 27 2012 : 04:55:22 AM I am shipping 14 handmade scarves to NJ. Would UPS be cheaper? It's a nice size box, but I don't have the weight on it yet.

Posted - Dec 25 2012 : 2:27:27 PM I haven't had good luck mailing large packages through usps unless it can be shipped flat rate. If it can't than ups. Ups has way better tracking than usps. If you do a lot of shipping of large packages, like dh and I do, then ups it. If you do occasions that can go flat rate then usps.

Posted - Dec 18 2012 : 05:01:14 AM Just an update - My box was much bigger than the flat rate medium box. I paid less than the flat rate also. I guess mailing crocheted items is less shipping first class than flat rate.
Thanks... this is helping me with other items that need shipped too.

Posted - Dec 18 2012 : 04:59:17 AM I am very pleased with USPS... I tried to mail a Christmas box one year and UPS wanted to charge me $30 and the postoffice charged me just under $20.. It was a BIG box too !
The delivery systerm is soo much better than just a few years ago. They are really into customer service and you can get delivery confirmation on about everything. I bought one of their larger boxes one day and found the shipping was less than the flat rate. So I would try both options if you aren't sure.
LOVE USPS !!

Posted - Dec 12 2012 : 08:18:34 AM Oh Betty, I agree. The USPS messes up all the time but I never complain about them. I used to be the Healthcare person in the Tampa, FL plant and they are so, so busy with a lot of pressure. Also, my friends laugh at me, and maybe it is me, but I am always amazed that you can send several pages of a letter all the way to Alaska for less than the price of a cup of coffee, or a phone call. When I think about how long it used to take by horse, or think about how many people touch that piece of mail to get it where it is supposed to go, I just see it as a HUGE bargin. I never even think to use UPS. Joey

Posted - Dec 12 2012 : 07:14:07 AM Thank you CeeJay. I used to complain about the USPS and how I didn't like the way they did their business. THEN I walked a mile in their shoes. It is a lot of work, lots of standing, lots of casing the mail to get it in order, then there is the delivery. That is, by far, the best part--being out in the fresh air, meeting customers, etc.
Thank you again.

Posted - Dec 12 2012 : 07:01:07 AM I agree with Betty J.! We have the grouchiest mail carrier on the planet and he's been our carrier for 20+ years but he does a good job. I do business at post offices in two different cities and these folks know me by name and the service is outstanding and personal. They tell me they LOVE to see my packages because they are decorated and that brightens their day! So, I will continue to give business to the postal service! And, I'll continue to thank and give treats to my GROUCHY mail carrier. Heaven knows he needs all the encouragement he can get! CJ

Posted - Dec 11 2012 : 5:27:58 PM Please help keep our USPS in business. Those flat rate boxes are made to hold at least 70 pounds without a change in price. It's a good deal if your items are heavy.

Posted - Dec 11 2012 : 4:45:40 PM Kristi, I've used both and, for the most part, find that USPS to be the better deal. I use flat rate boxes as much as possible.
Our UPS delivery guys have been the BEST and very careful, so I can't complain about that at all. They even give my dog doggie treats!
Hope that helps! CJ

Posted - Nov 29 2012 : 08:04:00 AM Weight though is pretty much the savings you will get if you use the USPS flat rate boxes or unless you are shipping way out west...As far as UPS-I will NEVER use UPS. I watched in horror one afternoon while a delivery man stood at the bottom of my neighbors front porch and FLUNG a medium sized box smack onto her porch then walked away. Unbelievable...Also, My DH used to work for UPS and once chastised me for taking the time to write FRAGILE on a package I was sending out. He said "Do you really think they read that?" It's all about time and how fast you can load and unload parcels. So, I will stick to the good old U.S. Post office thank you very much!
