Okay, I know that sounds odd for the subject, but what I mean is how to fix my hair in different styles. I have very thick blond hair that is a couple of inches below my shoulders. I would like to braid it and put the braids on top or something like that. I like how my hair looks up, but am clueless on how to fix it that way. Any suggestions, instructions or even videos would help me greatly!

Thanks,
Dawn in IL

Sounds just like Madison here in Wisconsin.

I just realized another use for the Ketylo hair sticks yesterday: setting one's hair to make waves easily! Just twist your almost-dry hair all the way to the ends, curl the roll back on itself against your head, insert a stick in an up-down-up-down motion (catching some of the base hair against your scalp on the downs), leave it until dry, and voila! Natural looking waves!

Sherri -- the town was one west of Norfolk Va. -- we had gone to a peanut festival, and it was absolutely one of the weirdest things I've ever Evah gone thru --

I'd wanted to go to our local county fair, but tom had this hair-brained idea to go to the peanut festival -- so off we went. Gabriel went with us, cause we hadn't seen each other for awhile, so that part of the day was good.

The rest was just too weird.

When we took gabriel back to his little house, Tom & I went out to eat at a local chinese (sp)take-out that we always used to go to when we lived up there...an' not once did we get any weird looks an' glares like we did at that dumb festival.

Needless to say, tom has been Completely Lectured on never ever Evah goin' to that thing again.

Laurianne - what kind of a festival was it that you got funny looks? Sounds like a very conservative gathering! Around here it's pretty easy to be yourself in public. (Well maybe not in our tiny town, but definately in Olympia.) Someone told me once that Olympia - home of a very famous liberal college - was "nine square miles surrounded by reality". It's a very laid back town (city?) where no one gives anyone a second look if you're a bit different - because everyone is different. I love it!

~~ ~~ OH!!

I'm not the Only one who can Not even remotely braid my hair!! Ha!!

What I do, is sorta/kinda/looks like - braid my hair..actually just sorta part it down the middle in the back, take each side section, make 2 sections of that, and twist each section over the other. It does look like a braid, in a remote sorta way.

When Tom & I went to a festival last fall, we got the most horrid looks -- between tom's long hair & beard, my braids, and our musician son with his tall boots, bandana, and olive colored pants, we just finally had to leave.

It just drives me crazy that people can actually braid hair!! -- my mother never taught me...sigh...I feel deprived...

Well, so far, I've worn my very thick naturally curly hair every way everyone has mentioned and one more way no one mentioned. I pull it back to the base of my head and use a ponytail holder then I separate my hair above the holder in the middle then flip the ponytail hanging down up(from the outside) and down through the hole I made by above the holder. It is a very pretty look.
If I didn't describe this well enough email me and I'll try to give a better description.

Thanks for the side braid idea Belle. I have pulled my ponytail to the side, but never thought of braiding on the side too. I'll give it a shot since my back braid is rather uneven.

I thought I was the only one who got headaches from ponytails. It is kind of comforting to know other people have the same problem. I thought it was just me.

Hi,

Have you tried doing your hair in a side braid?

I have long hair and I can't reach back behind my head to make a regular braid, so I often make a side braid. I make the part in my hair go way over to the side of my head opposite side of where my braid will be. I pull all of the hair over to the side of my head and braid it. Sometimes it takes awhile to get it braided just right.
I love wearing my hair in a braid one side. It is very comfortable, it is out of my face, and I don't get hair-headaches as I do with ponytails.

I have a family circle magazine that shows how to put hair in a bun. I think the article is in the October issue from 2008. Maybe you could read the article online.

Thanks for the link Stasia and thanks Farrah for mentioning the book. I'll look for it at the book store this week.

Right now I have my hair in braids & criss-crossed on the top of my head. It is cute, but still a work in progress!

My favorite book for long hair is a pre-teen book by Klutz. It has all of these different ways to braid and fix long hair. I've tried a few of the braids. I'm growing my hair out now (it's about 4" below shoulders). Also, I try to curl it with Garnier Fructis curl sculpting. I usually stick with natural products, but I couldn't find a curl sculptor at Whole Foods and it works great.

Blessings!

Thanks for the advice Tara. I will need to get a hair stick. I like braiding from the neckline. I have a terrible time trying to do a French braid. My hair is so sick that it is hard to get all the strands in when I start too high up. I am hoping the stick will help keep the bun in place since bobby pins or barrettes never stay in for me. My hair is so heavy that it pulls them down.

Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences on this!

Hi Dawn, My hair is super straight, thick, and to the middle of my back. I find it quick & easy to give it a braid from the neckline, wrap it into a bun (braid to be flat against you). To keep it in this position: insert a hair-stick in one side, under the center of the braid, & out the opposite side. I just stick the end of the braid under the bun. I found it easier to keep my hair together without the discomfort of a headache or something. I'm half oriental, & found the oriental-touch much more easy & comfortable. Hope ya give it a try! Tara

yay for short hair! my hair is very thin and fine as well. i wore it long (or longish) most of my life, but abotu 9 months ago i chopped it off. at first i got the expected pixie, but then my hairdresser and i started playing with it. now its all disjoined and choppy and always looks purposfuly messy. i love it and so do my friends, but my family is still having trouble getting use to it. i'm just to the point in life where i am done fighting nature. my hair was not ment to be beautiful long, but it is amazing and sassy cut short.

Gals, I am no help at all... I have very short hair now and Love it. I wash it and run my fingers through it and a bit of gel and off I go,. When it looks realy messy I canalways put on my "farmgirl baseball cap" I had longer hair when I worked, it was a pain in the butt to do.. I have very fine STRAIGHT as a String hair and if I didn't do it every day curl, or blow dry it with mousse to giv eit volume I looked like a greasy flat head. Oh My I do Love the wash & go look.

I wear my hair in pigtails a lot and people always look at me surprised, then they smile and comment on it. My hair is heavy and a regular pony tail can hurt my neck or give me a headache, hence the pigtails. I love braids though and am practicing to make mine look nicer then they usually do.

I have been wearing two braids a lot lately and I've noticed a funny phenomenon. People stare at me, like I'm weird or something when I'm wearing the braids (grey hair), but it doesn't bother me at all because I'm comfortable in them - they are me. However, when I have the "socially acceptable look for my age" , like at the gala event this weekend, I blend in with the crowd, but I'm really self-conscious and uncomfortable. I guess it's just a good example of how we feel when we're trying to be what we're not.

Tina, those are pretty. I have long thick hair, too. I usually just do the pony tail. Or down and pulled back at the top. I would love to learn how to french braid my own hair but can't even do someone else's. I love french braids. I cannot handle my hair down all over, especially when I am working on something.

I have just the opposite problem. My hair is so baby fine that barrettes and elastics simply slide right out of my hair. A few years ago, these people were at a local renaissance fair and challenged me to try out their hair sticks. http://www.kjcraftworks.com/Hairsticks/stick-beaded.shtml

They held my hair so well that I bought a pair right there. I love them. Their unique spiral design will hole both very thick and very thin hair and anything in between.

I finally got to watch the videos today. Thanks for the links Sherri. I found the one for braids very helpful and has given me more ideas on what to try. Who knew there were so many ways to braid you hair?

I guess practice makes perfect, so I'll try to braid my hair every day until I get it right!

Thanks again!

Wow...your hair must be REALLY thick! What about putting your hair in pigtails first, and then braiding the pigtails? That might give you a bit more control, although you'd see rubber bands at the base.

Jessie, that is how I want to wear my hair too for the summer time! I am having trouble braiding my hair though, it is really thick and the top of the braids are super thick and I have trouble make the 3 strands for each braid even. I must of missed hair 101 back in high school!

I am growing my hair out with the only goal of having it long enough to braid and wrap around my head like I did when I was a girl! I used to part my hair down the middle and braid each half, a la Laura Ingalls Wilder, and then wrap each side up and over my crown, securing it in place with a few bobby pins. The look was very Heidi-like, but it worked with my big, square face!

Thanks Michele (wise guy), Heather, Sherri and Terri! I appreciate your input and help on this! I can't wait to check out the links and see if they are something I can actually do. As I said, I'm hair challenged.

My hair is so thick that clips break and barrettes don't hold. I do wear pigtails a lot since pony tails hurt my neck. I love the old fashioned braids that you criss cross over your head. Sure hope it is in that video Sherri.

Thanks again, I knew I could count on the farmgirls for help!
