This is a representation of kwan yin, across the small of my back. She is the Goddess of Compassion in Buddhism. I got her as sort of a coming to terms with infertility. Then exactly one year later. Prego In China women pray to her for sons and beautiful daughters. She is also patron saint to women that cannot reproduce.
It is hard to take a pic of your back without crack showing, so it's a little off.

Posted - Mar 04 2010 : 6:14:19 PM Amy, Within the circle tattoo are the Chinese symbols for 'Serenity'. It is my geek badge. Anyone remember the TV show Firefly? It was the name of the ship. I am a HUGE fan! The black Japanese kanji are the symbols for "Artist" The Domestic Goddess was my homage to women who can and do, and I am one of them!! My husband began to call me a Domestic Goddess years ago, I liked it and have adopted it as a business name...Domestic Goddess Enterprises. I so love caring for my family and being engaged in the domestic arts. Tattoos aren't for everyone, but I have always admired it as an artistic element. I am at the point in my life where what others think of me matters much less that what I think of myself. Therese

Posted - Mar 04 2010 : 2:14:21 PM wow therese! your oragami swans are some of the most intricate and detailed tattoos i think i've ever seen! beautiful! i don't feel like fooling with photobucket right now, but i thought this thread was so cute! i just have one small green butterfly on the small of my back... like Brenda mentioned, i think it would be a good idea to wait until you're older to get tattoos. i wouldn't consider mine a mistake by any means, i just wish i would have waited longer to figure out something more creative and more "me." i think if i were to get one now, i would get a snowflake... they are kind of my symbol! but, hey, i was young (20 i think) on a trip to Venice Beach, CA with my ex-boyfriend and wanted to be spontaneous... he paid for it, so at least i didn't spend anyting for it!

Posted - Mar 04 2010 : 11:48:19 AM Amy, lovely tattoo! I also really like the song that played on your blog...Exactly. I have had 8 tattoo sessions, for a total of 10 images, and a bit of background. I am going in tonight to get more background work done. My first was for my 50th, and I'm hooked! My husband is totally supportive. My artist keeps asking when he is going to get his, and I say don't encourage him, as we really can't afford both of us doing this!
Here are my tats, I hope you enjoy them, I sure do!

Jessie - it was my first tattoo so I don't know if I can say that it hurt much more than any other place. I really didn't think it hurt that bad, but I figure after child birth and several injuries roofing houses, a needle in the skin is harmless!

Posted - Mar 03 2010 : 11:46:21 AM LOL----
Years ago, my son had his first tattoo...he didn't think I knew about it but I found out from his sister. One afternoon he came to the house, sat down in the living room and we were just shooting the breeze. I casually mentioned to him that years ago unknown by anyone that I had secretly had a very tiny banana tattoo done--- located on my gluteus maximus---His jaw dropped--I then told him I'll show you mine if you show me yours---Immediately, he yelled NO!!---raised his shirt sleeve to unveil a very small tattoo of a bat....I got him good. I have no tattoos at all!
Although, I have been tempted to get one!

Posted - Mar 03 2010 : 10:20:22 AM Very pretty Amy. I don't know if I am brave enough to get a tattoo on my wrist. Ooh the skin there is so thin and soft! I love that you told about what it symbolized. My Aunt and I had the same conversation that your almost 6 year old and you did..lol

Posted - Mar 02 2010 : 7:00:02 PM omgosh! that is so cute!! Didn't it hurt like crazy to have it put on your foot though? Most tats don't really hurt, but some places surely do. I thought I was going to cry when they did my butterfly on my hip, but I have heard having it on the top of your foot is worse! :D hugs Jessie

Posted - Mar 02 2010 : 6:48:08 PM What a fun topic!

I got mine to celebrate my 40th birthday (much to my DH's chagrin). I designed it and hung the picture on my kitchen cupboard for almost 5 years before I knew for sure it's what I wanted. I picked my foot because I knew there wasn't as much there to sag
I picked a dragonfly because dragonflies symbolize a couple of important things to me: Self-awareness that comes with maturity (what better way to celebrate my 40th birthday ), and because dragonflies also symbolize positive forces in life, and because they have a such a short life span, dragonflies also symbolize living life to its fullest.
PS: For some reason, Teresa, I KNEW you had tattoos

Posted - Mar 02 2010 : 5:49:26 PM That's definitely something to take into consideration, Brenda.:) I was so nervous about getting one when I first did. Some of them were beautiful and others had me downright scared they were just poorly done. I picked something I liked, and did my research as far as the places to have them done, cleanliness, etc. After the year, I went back to what I had chosen and decided I didn't like it after all. I picked something else and waited another year. I figured I would be having it for the rest of my life, so if in a years time I liked it, then I would be good to go. Finally, I decided on my first one. The poor guys at the tattoo place probably thought I was a nut. I asked to see their portfolios of the work they had done. I asked about the kind of ink they used and what affects it could have on my body. (I never got anything with red in it, because most people who have the posssibility of an allergy, will usually find they have trouble with the red inks). I asked about sterilization and then checked out their shop to see how clean it was and how professional the guys working there acted. I was probably going way overboard with my researching things, but I wanted to know, and after all I was paying for it. ;)
Tattooes have to be something that you like and have done just for you. After all, you are the one who has to wear it...hehe It is so neat to see everyone else take on them. Lots of people object, and of course, that is an opinion to be respected also. Everybody is different. I love seeing the pics!! hugs Jess

Posted - Mar 02 2010 : 4:57:49 PM This is funny to see this post now....I've been off and on about getting one.... I want a small celtic knot, with each of my 5 children's initials in it.... maybe on my right hand ring finger- ouch, or on my back, just a teeny, tiny one! 3/5 of my kids don't want me to get one, lol! My sister in law said something to me at Christmas though.... she said young girls(including her when she was younger) have no business getting tattoos, they should wait until they are at least 45, so that they are sure they will always love what they have. Makes sense to me! :) Getting one at my age (50) I would be doing it for me, and no other reason.

Posted - Mar 02 2010 : 4:48:39 PM I got my first 2 on my 50th birthday. A bluebird on my left ankle and a bumblebee on top of my left foot. On my 51st birthday I got a dragonfly on top of my right foot. |

Posted - May 05 2009 : 6:09:01 PM Well I don't do photos but I have a dragonfly on the top of my shoulder as a reminder of a great childhood memory the day I was laying on the small tank dam hands behind my head watching the dragonflies fly and I remember thinking to myself it doesn't get any better than this... all's well with the world. Now at age 50 something, I see it in the mirror and have to smile...
also a big butterfly on my backside upper hip! My Mother use to say you have to raise a few caterpillars to get beautiful butterflies (we were her caterpillars/butterflies)
2 Chinese characters one on the outside each ankle one for truth and one for love..
Then my old man's name on my ring finger he's the love of my life and after 32 years(now34 yrs) of marriage I figured why not...
So I had a mid-life crisis! about 2 summers ago others only see the ones on my ankles and finger and they are small....hey at least when I turn 80 you'll still be able to tell what they are!
