Posted - Jun 11 2009 : 6:14:58 PM I have been notified I will be losing my current job assignment in 4-6 months. I will have to interview for new positions inside the company, or possibly outside if I can't find an internal position. This is scary since I haven't had to interview for about 15 years.
I am 52, overweight (kind of an apple shape) and currently work in a manufacturing facility - my work wardrobe reflects this - I wear oxford-cloth shirts and docker-style pants with flat black shoes, oxfords, every day. No waist at all.
Next job may be a headquarters position, what do they wear at corporate headquarters now? Do I invest in suits with skirts or dresses or pantsuits? Or new Dockers and polo shirts? Should I look at Hillary Clinton's wardrobe or Michelle Obama's or Madeline Allbright's for pointers?

Posted - Jul 14 2009 : 12:20:54 PM hello,
i had a friend once that had a job similar to what it sounds like your going for. She would shop at Lane Brynt in the mall for her outfits. Her general rule as far as fashion sense went was..."If its in that store...then its in style".
Hope it helps

Posted - Jul 14 2009 : 12:16:03 PM I private e-mailed you----but just to keep this going also---what size shoes do you wear? If you are interested and can tell me what type of clothes you are looking for, I will definitely send you pictures to make sure you are interested BEFORE I send.
Take care,

Posted - Jun 28 2009 : 6:19:17 PM Brenda!!! I am saying NO to dressy "office" stuff in my closet as we speak! email me with your needs/sizes and I'll see if I have something that will work! I've got several nice lined jackets and a few skirts. I have a few blouses. I'm 49 and also have a bit of a Rubinesque figure. I'm keeping one or two pairs of heels for conferences and important meetings and the rest of the time I'm going with the black pants/dressed up blouse or something that I create. So...you are in luck...if there is something in my closet that will work for you...it's YOURS!!! |

Go to a store and try on black dress pants until you find a pair that fits well; sometimes the store people are helpful. Find a button down white blouse and a jacket that will look good on you; it could be black, brown or navy. Thats really all you need along with some nice shoes. Black.Buy the best pair of shoes you can afford. Often you can find a good jacket at the thrift. pants are harder to find at the thrift or consignment but after you figure what looks good on you sometimes you can snag a brand or cut that will work. What is most important is to research the job and be ready to answer these questions. Why do you want the job? what makes you a good fit for it? What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? When they ask about weaknesses say something like some people say I'm too committed to my job. LOL! |

Posted - Jun 28 2009 : 1:04:01 PM Thanks for telling us about the MissusSmartyPants site. I just signed up and hope it helps me move beyond yoga pants and baggy t-shirts or western shirts, jeans and cowboy boots!
I can't wait to see what colors she recommends for me. I have a habit of doing black or white with very little other color because I'm clueless when it comes to colors to wear.

Posted - Jun 12 2009 : 3:49:15 PM if you don't want to spend $20, go to the library and check out a book called Trinny and Susanna's WHAT NOT TO WEAR. if you can be honest with yourself, it will help you learn what does and doesnot flatter your particular shape. as for interviews, i would get one really great outfit. don't do a suit as they tend to be stuffy, go for mix and match seperates (ie: chocolate slacks, a pink blouse, and a cream or tan jacket with interesting detailing). also, that way when you get a call back interview you can easily change the blouse and accessories (the less expensive parts of the outfit), roll the cuffs of the jacket and have a different look all together. it is amazing what you can do with a few very good pieces.

Posted - Jun 12 2009 : 05:59:42 AM Hi Brenda. I was about in the same boat as you and I wasn't ever a fashionista to begin with. What saved me was MissusSmartyPants, I found her through the Flylady website. For under $20 you can get a three month internet subscripton to her site. She will decide your shape and then send you weekly emails showing you how to dress for your figure, including acessories, shoes, etc. She even includes sample of clothing that are perfect for you and are on SALE, with their websites. I cannot even begin to tell you how amazing she is. She was a life safer for me. People actually thought I had lost weight, when I hadn't, but I was wearing the right type of clothing for my body shape, the right colors for my complexion, etc. She just makes it so easy, even the fashioned challenged, like myself felt confident. Hope this helps. Oh, one more thing, I have a daughter who does HR for a living and she said don't interview in red or black as they are power colors, it's okay to wear them once you have the job and are settled in but you don't want to be percieved has being a threat to your interviewer. Good Luck!!!
