On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being "great idea...give me a pair of scissors and let's get on this!", and 10 being "we must now take you before the firing squad"....
...how sinful do y'all think it would be to *gasp* alter a *gasp again* VINTAGE Gunne Sax dress?? I'm stuck on the "omg, I'd be chopping up a piece of collectible vintage clothing" mindset...
But the only way I'll ever wear that cute thing would be if the PUFFY sleeves came off. It looks ADORABLE sleeveless...it has a cute collar that makes it look classy...especially paired with pearls and white pumps. But the sleeves need to go, or it'll live in my closet for a long time.
Thoughts, farmgirl fashionistas??

I say "Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, Do without."
If you won't use it the way it is make it do the way you want it to be and then wear it out. It's the green thing to do :)

Oh my gosh! Are those things collectible? There was a time that's about all I had in my closet! My wedding dress was a Gunne Sax! I'd say cut the buggers off. Fashion never comes back exactly the same anyway. It's only of value if you can use it.

Go for it! Of course this is coming from the gal that got stuck cutting the arms out of real fur coats at one of my old jobs. the other girls were just about in tears. I just trying not to suck a hariball down my throat. lol

Before cutting the sleeves off completely, try removing the elastic on the puffy sleeve or removing the band if it is gathered that way. You could also make the sleeve looser by opening the underarm seam of the sleeve and narrowly handsewing the raw edges.
I've done this recently with a knee length float dress which I shortened into a top, and it has all the comfort of being sleeveless.
If you decide to take the sleeves off, don't cut them out. Cut the sleeves away from the dress, leaving about one and a half inches of sleeve. Fold it to the inside and hand sew. This is using the sleeve as the armhole binding. |

Thanks all, for giving me the courage needed to cowgirl up and pull out the scissors!! I'll post pics before & after on my blog...but give it a bit, because I'm smack dab in the middle of moving. Probably be a couple weeks, but I'll post here when I have it up. :) Alee, saving the sleeves is an idea I hadn't even considered, so thanks for mentioning that!!
I'm excited...I think it'll be wonderful to wear for a summer tea.................

Go for it!! I once found a very name brand dress (that I didn't know it was a very name brand dress until someone freaked out about it) for a ball at a thrift shop. I was hacking into, to let out the bust and my friend just about DIED that I was ruining a "vintage designer" dress...well does me no good if it don't fit!!!

I would do it in a second. The armholes could end up a little too big though and you might have to fix that problem. Is there any way you could post a picture of it? Best of luck.

Take the sleeves off very carefully with some seam rippers and save them incase inspiration hits at a later date. You might have to do a little hand sewing to reclose the arms.
