Hello, Farmgirl Fashion Sewing Ladies!
I have a couple of patterns that are a little bit DYI based on one's own measurements. One pattern uses a French curve. Was that not something we used in math class? I know it's a type of ruler for making custon necklines, armholes, etc. Does anyone use one? Are they hard to find? Is one better than the other?
The other question is about making a pair of shorts. The whole pattern is based on one's own measurements. One of the measurements is the " total rise, front to back." It looks like it corresponds to the crotch seam, as for when you " sew the horse shoe" in a pants type garment. I'm trying to say this politely. Would I take the measurement by putting the tape measure at my center waist, running it down and across my underwear, then up the midline to the midpoint of my waist in the back? I think that's what they mean but I wanted to get a second opinion!

A French curve can be bought at any well stocked fabricstore. One type is not better then the other. If this is something you are going to use just periodically purchase a short plastic one, they are cheaper. the metal ones come quite expensive. I did have one but sold it to a costume maker. It is used to make rounded sections of a pattern. This sounds weird but I use the lid of a margarine container if needed.
The rise on your shorts is as you described. Tummy around crotch to mid-back where you want waist band to be.
However since you will be sitting in these shorts, I would measure your back from mid-crotch to mid-back while sitting. If you don't when you do sit your shorts will pull down at the back.. Make sense? Your bum in a muscle, that sit differently then when you stand, however in most cases not a huge measurement difference.
