It's time to confess!
First of all, you should know that I am not new to sewing.I have been sewing for more than 30 years. It isn't that I don't know any better it's just that I am so excited about finishing a project that I get in a hurry and let the bad habits take over.
Some (but not all) of my bad habits are:
Starting WAY too many projects at once
Not changeing the needle to suit the material. I tend to use a universal needle in a medium size.
I constantly misplace my seam ripper. So I use whatever is close by i.e.embroidery scissors, needles and pins are favs
I hate to change bobbin thread. I think there should be some kind of chameleon thread that adapts to the color of your project.
Last but not least..I sometimes sew in my underwear. I don't plan it that way, but sometimes I have to take off my clothes to try on the new clothes. I would rather sew than take the time to redress. It's a good thing I have a room with a door I can close!

Okay...I feel better. Now lets hear some of yours.

Sewing over pins. Bad, bad, bad. I teach quilting, and lecture my students about the dangers of it. For those who lose scissors, I recommend a small item called a zinger that clips or pins on your shirt. You can attach a small pair of scissors to it. It has a wire that pulls out and retracts when you need to clip threads. They are awesome! You can get them at some quilt shops, and also sporting goods stores in the fishing section. I prefer the clip style as opposed to the pin. It seems to damage clothing less.

Happy Sewing! Steph

I sew barefoot with pins in my mouth. It drives my professors nuts.

My bad sewing habit is how I sit in my 'sewing chair'. I scooch way up on the edge of the chair, leaned forward with my shoulders hunched kinda forward. (never wrote it out before.... I must look like a weirdo :)

Too funny about sewing in underwear!

Like most others here, I also have too many projects going at once. Not that that's a bad thing, just sometimes too many at once.

And me too, I consider mending to be a tedious chore.

I'm not sure if this is my worse habit, but it's gotta be my messiest, I throw all my thread tails on the floor. I just cut them off and throw them down to the right side of me.

When I'm on a rag quilt marathon, I end up with big labyrinths of thread on the floor.

As I read the many posts on this thread I realized that I am not much different from anyone else.
My sewing hang ups are
1. Unfinished quilts, I make the tops and get intimidated on the finishing.
2. fabricaholic
3. Not changing the bobbin to match the top thread
4. Unfinished projects in general, seems only the ones for me are left unfinished I get others item done before mine
5. Buying patterns on sale and stashing them away, I might use them someday!

Just a few. But I see now that I am in good company and I feel a bit normal.

Hello Everyone, WOW bad habits....I don't know where to start. Too many projects, 67 Block of the month unfinished, over 100 quilt tops waiting to be completed, I'm always losing my glasses and can't see close up. So now I have a pair of reading glasses by the machine, my chair, kitchen, porch, thank God for $$$$$ stores. LOL When I worked I bought a ton of fabric thinking that when I retire, money might be tight, and I would have a stash. Well I've been retired since 2003 and haven't even made a dent. I don't change needles as often as I should, hate winding bobbins, and I tend to throw fabric scraps and thread on the floor instead of the waste basket, (which sits right next to me)

Speaking of mending or alterations... I HATE it!!! My friends know this and they STILL all ask me "Could you just take this in for me?" or "Could you just hem these for me real quick?" Arrrghhh!!! LOL

Right at this moment I have four suits of my son's that need to be hemmed and have the waist let out. I have two blouses that need to be taken in.(I lost a little weight and I really like these blouses or I wouldn't even bother.) And I have six neckties that need hand-stitching repair on the back. I can't even tell you how long those ties have been in that pile. It's really sad. I hope I get to them before my son outgrows them. LOL

I think we have all experienced these habit one time or another. I don't really sew in my underwear, though.

I'm laughing at all these posts, as I do most all of these bad habits, from sewing in my underwear to having too many projects going at once.

Here's my bad habit when it comes to sewing, specifically, hand sewing. Scissors usually walk off all on their own, leaving me to use my teeth. The elderly lady who taugh me to sew, said her dentist told her, her teeth had unusually deep ridges in them, and they decided it was from thread cutting.

I'm with all you pattern buyer's. I have such high expections that I'm just going to sew them all. Then I love sitting down and going through all of them and taking a mental note as to what I will need to get them done. Then they find a nice home in my sewing room. And Voila, I run across them sometime later and again think "I need to make this"!!! If only I could have unlimited time to just lock myself in, and sew until I create all my dreams. OH I forgot, I'm a multi-task farmgirl not a fairy princess! But I try

Isn't it funny that people think because you enjoy creative sewing that you must like to mend and do alterations?Sometimes it's hard to say no, but to me hemming a pair of pants or sewing a patch on my son's boy scout shirt is like writing a term paper! Dianne

By far my worst sewing habit is buying TOO many patterns! I need to start sewing some of them up before I purchase any more!

right now i am wearing a shirt that is missing three buttons. they went missing a loooonnnnnnng time ago! LOL! if anyone sees them don't bother telling me 'cause i refuse to sew them on again. after all at some point they will simply part company with the shirt again...so why bother? LOL!

Okay, I guess I have a amother one I need to admit to - I too have a mending black hole. Even if it's just a button, actually especially if it's just a button, I hate sewing buttons on.

You all are cracking me up. Right now I have 4 shirts for little guy waiting for hems & neckbands (get my machines back tomorrow!), a scrap purse, a tote bag, a patchwork shirt and I actually just finished one of my open ended projects, a quilt for the same lil guy, so yah, waaay too much going at once. Machine and fabric addictions as well.

I'm pretty good with maintenance, needle changing, etc, with my older machines. The new machines are another story. I really dislike having to traipse 60 miles one way to have a yearly for a machine, the result was pushing them for far too long until my SM would not stitch anything,I was scared I did major damage, but happily a few days at the dealers did wonders!

I've been known to sew in my bra in the summer, as my loft gets pretty darn warm

LOL!! Aren't we all peas in a pod!! One of these days I am buying myself an RV. I will set it up as a traveling sewing room and go from house to house doing the mending everyone hates!! I could make a good living at that and what fun visiting with everyone

Hmmmmm. . . . maybe I should take a drive down to the RV dealer and take a peek around. . .

Oh my gosh, this is all too funny and too familiar. You should see the mess I make when using my serger. Fabric strips everywhere. I have tried a catcher but it always gets in the way so it is elbows and fabric everywhere. I sew wayyyy too fast and just make a complete mess as I go. And the worst thing is I hate to clean up after myself.

keep searchin'-it's out there somewhere.

Mine is defiantly not changing the bobbin if I can get away with the color. And for some reason I don't like to wind bobbins unless I have too!
I'm getting better about pressing [when I get it together and plug the iron in.]
Lazy I guess...

Dianne,
I dispise mending! I like constructing from the beginning. I also do not like doing alterations on a ready-made.

Marcy, It would be great to get together to sew! I don't have any sewing friends nearby. So glad I have you guys!

Linda, Woo Hoo!!! another underwear sew-er. I try not to run around the house this way,but it has happened. In warmer weather I usually "dress" to sew. As in a robe or loose dress so I can pull things off and on. In the winter I start out with the delusion that I won't disrobe then just end up FREEZING. LOL

Since we are also listing things we do well. I guess my categories are
1. I always backstitching
2 I always iron seams open. I can't sew without my iron! As a matter of fact the sewing machine and iron are at right angles to each other. I just turn my chair to iron a seam.

Don't know how I forgot this bad habit, but I HATE to mend anything! My family calls my mending pile "the black hole" and warn one another never to put anything there because you'll never see it again. Anyone else dislike mending as much as I do? Dianne
