I'm starting a new thread. We can share what we are baking, sewing, planting, or prepping. Autumn begins the 22nd. The month of August flew by and although I prepped something for freezer/pantry almost daily, I feel there is much more to do. I don't sew or knit. but a warm yummy knitted sweater would be a need for winter. I am planting Autumn crops-broccoli, kale, brussels sprouts, pole beans, sugar snaps and carrots. I am waiting for a very GOOD sale on winter squash(pests took out my plants) I need more soil for raised beds and straw to keep them warm. What are you doing to get ready for next season?

Like you, Tara, I like to get things ready for the next season.
Ordered & delivered from Amazon - potting soil & peat moss for raised beds & containers.
Ordered from Eden Bros - bulbs to be delivered in Oct and elephant ear bulbs to be delivered next spring.
Also veg & herb seeds from Eden Bros - 2 pkgs of red onion seeds - I will sow one pkg in raised bed before 1st frost to see how it does - the other pkg I will sow in early spring. Herb seeds will be started indoors in early spring or sown outdoors.
Forgot to add. Fall is a good time to take stock of all canning & freezing supplies and buy what is needed for next season.
Tara, I use leaves to cover my raised beds and containers, I don't have much sunlight, but I do have leaves.
August was horrible and I lost all zinnias, lemon grass, and lemon thyme. Don't know if the gladiolas will come back next year. All herbs on deck survived August.

Right now my main focus it to continue collecting things from the garden and either canning or freezing it to have for the winter or next year. My biggest things right now are beets, carrots, peppers, tomatoes and zucchini. I bounce between each of them depending on which one has more ready to be preserved. Then as each plant finishes for the season I will begin prepping the ground for winter and next season.

Like Krista, I am trying to finish up garden harvest. Apple harvest is almost here. Then it will be wood harvest. But I hope to find a sale on bags of starter soil. When I have time I am cleaning up herb/flower beds. I so lost the weed battle this year, but I am trying.

It was a different year this year and my flowers and herbs are more weeds than anything else this year too, Michele.
Right now I'm working on tomatoes and lima beans with a few peppers here and there. Not quite time to call it quits and get ready for next year.

There is a volunteer cherry tomato plant still giving fruit. I'm collecting a few every other day to freeze for future soup. I washed bed pillows, let dry in sunshine. 2 meat loafs in freezer Monday 28 pounds of apples in refrigerator to process Now is the time to wash jackets and sweaters, let dry in sunshine Next week we will escape to the ocean a few days. Keep getting ready for next season and next year

I love reading about all of your harvest preparations. I have been juicing, dehydrating and freeze drying. This year the zuchinnis are HUGE and my cucumbers were trying to compete. It has been a good year with beans, tomatoes, pumpkins, swiss chard, beets, spaghetti squash and corn. The carrots are just not growing though. I have never had no success
I am looking at planting winter crops to replenish the nutrients in the soil. Has anyone done that before?

These last 2 weeks my green beans have really gone crazy. We have just eaten what was available, but now I have a bunch that I may be able to can some.

Jeanette, good food all winter for you. I haven't tried a crop cover. I'm in SC and sweet allysum blooms most of the winter. This year and part of next I'll leave beds covered with leaves and no plants Krista, best to can the beans to enjoy all winter
I picked about 2 pounds of sweet peppers. I roasted some with dinner-very tasty! I have stuffed a dozen Marconi/Pablano with a sausage, and herb mixture. I'm thinking I will slice rest to freeze. I should have a few more Marconi to diced for future pizza topping.

The past few days a constant breeze. A good time to get all the winter blankets and fleece jackets washed. The sunshine and the breeze dried all. Take freezer inventory to be sure of what we have and need.

I'm planning to can some tomato soup on a rainy Tuesday (tomorrow) LOL!
I've been collecting seeds from the beans, sunflowers, peppers, and ... I'm not sure what else is there without looking. I've gotten jackets washed and ready too. Mostly we've been doing the outside farm stuff rather than garden and house stuff.
Jeanette - I'm going to plant some wheat seed soon in the garden and then till it under in the spring.

About time to plant garlic for me. I usually plant sometime around October 12. I saved the best bulbs for planting. Will do that sometime this week. Now that the weather has cooled down I will get started on cutting wood. I asked my boys to come and help, and they will on Sunday. I know 2 are coming and hopefully the oldest one will too. His kids are bigger, lol. Grandkids are 16-3 years old. we have a bunch of dead elm that they can cut down for me, then I can go out and cut away as I feel like it. My husbands back is bad right now, so will do what I can. We did get second crop all baled and hauled, so that is done. Happy Fall.

I finished collecting and canning the beets and banana peppers over the weekend. I also picked and canned some green beans. I am not sure if that was the last of the green beans or if there will be more. But my garden is finally winding down.

I have a couple of weeks yet before I plant the garlic, but need to harvest the carrots next week for sure. Not sure if I am going to can them or freeze them at this point.

Stacked up a bunch of firewood and now have poison something or other on my wrists. UGH! I really need to learn my poisons LOL! I thought long sleeves and gloves was good enough protection. Guess I was wrong :)

Heather, hope you feel better soon Sylvia, you can at least plan next years garden? My husband asked me to decide the garden layout and then he can make plans for permanent fence. I planted garlic today

Not really a stocking item. But having the tomato plants to over winter gives me a head start for 20206. Anyone over winter tomato plants? I'll try overwintering pepper plants, but haven't been successful

I've never heard of overwintering tomato or pepper plants! Do you plant them in dirt when they grow roots?
