I have been searching for a long time for a place to talk to other farm/ranch women. My husband and I own and operate a cattle ranch in North Central Washington State. We are "do-it-yourselfers" and sometimes I feel pretty isolated. No-one close who understands the demands and limitations of ranching. Would love to hear from other farm and ranch girls.

I do a lot of crochet, knitting, embroidery, crosstich, reading, cooking, etc.

Hi Karen!

I hope you love it here as much as I do! There are tons of women here that are living on working farms and ranches. This forum is such a loving and supportive place to come and chat. If I ever have a question, I can just about be sure that Someone here has an answer or tip!

What type of cattle do you raise and do you sell to local markets or over the internet or do you just raise enough to be self-sufficient?

Thank you so much for your quick response.
We have 880 deeded acres and a 3000 acre grazing permit. We run about 70 pair of angus crossbreds. We raise all our own hay and calve in the fall. Essentially we are a one-man (and woman) operation. We sell our calves in the fall at about a year old; just to a local market; haven't gotten into the internet auction.

We live at 3500' elevation so gardening is a challenge - short growing season and frost even on the 4th of July is common. Mainly grow root crops. All dry-land hay - one cutting - but takes almost a month to harvest.

More soon - thanks again.

Welcome Karen. Glad you decided to join in. Lots of Washingtonians here and a bunch on your side of the Mountains. We lived in Republic for a while and my husband still has a few shirt-tail relatives there. MaryBeth

Welcome Karen, I'm so glad you joined us. I'm new here also. My DH and I are planning on buying a small farm and "get off the grid" in about 3 years. My DH would like to get just a few cattle for personal use. I hope you'll let me pick your brain for "How to's" when the time comes. Again, Welcome!

Welcome, Karen! Don't have a farm (yet ) but try to live like I do on an acre. My 4 dogs are my cattle right now.

I think you'll just love it here...these gals are the best, when you need a recipe, when you need some support, when you have questions about vaccinations...whatever.

Can't wait to talk to you some more!
