I went back to the doctor yesterday and we went over my blood test results. It seems I have severe hypothyroidsm. Long story short, that causes hair loss (which I've had for a couple of years but my hair remains thick, thank goodness), memory problems, fatigue, difficulty losing weight, etc. All of the symptoms are textbook for me. I had 2 treatment options -- a natural thyroid replacement that has to be taken twice a day or a synthetic that is taken once a day. I went with the natural replacement. We started with a low dose, and I go back in 4 weeks for bloodwork to evaluate whether or not the dose needs to be higher.
Thyroid problems tend to occur more often in women and it runs in families. My sister, mother, and niece all have hypothyroidism. I'm looking forward to feeling better, more normal. All of these symptoms I thought were just part of aging, etc., so to find out there was a cause that could be treated was such a relief. With this and the Lexapro, I feel like the future is much brighter, as far as my mental and physical health.

I too have hypothyroidism. I have been on a synthetic supplement(synthroid) for about 2 years and I have seen NO change. My dr. thinks I am crazy and will not up my dosage. What is the natural supplement you are taking and does it require a perscription? I am tired of my Dr. but there are really no other alternatives in the area. He never listens to what I say and always seems to make diagnosis based on whatever drug the reps happen to be pushing the day I go in there.

Patti-
I am so glad that you gave us an update! I was thinking about you a lot this past week. I am so glad that you blood test was able to determine the underlying cause for some of your struggles. Now you won't be fighting you body so much, but rather getting it to work with you! You "sound" so much better and relieved! I am glad the Lexapro is helping too.
