Once upon a time, there was this little city girl who played Farm in her skyscraper apartment. Much to her parents dismay, she followed her heart and applied to a specialized high school in Queens NY and that is where her dreams of becoming a farmer found the fertile ground to begin forming the roots of her future.
My husband and I farm the land that has been in his family for over 153 yrs. We sold our milkers and are crop farmers now. I retired my dairy goats and am now looking into raising organic chickens and eggs with the help of my 10 1/2 yr old son. I am trying to teach him the importance of what you put into your mouth and how to achieve that goal. I'm a stay at home mom who is a huge foodie, lol. Growing and cooking food is a passion of mine. Lately cookbooks/magazines are my prime reading material. I like crafting and making "it" myself. Knitting dishclothes is what is the project on my needles of late. We have 5 cats, and 3 dogs. 2 of which are Austrailan Cattle dogs and the other is a Border Collie.
I am thrilled to have found this site!!!!!!!!!!! Hoping to get to know you all.

Welcome Tracey, this is a very nice place to belong to. You are so right about going organic. I do believe that being organic changes the quality of food for the best and that we benefit hightly of it. What sort of crops do you grow and what you cook and bake ? Looking forward to hear more about. Corinne |

Hi Girls, I can't thank you enough for the terrifc welcome. I started to reply to Corinne yesterday, when all of the sudden we had a power outage, not the best way for a computer to shutdown, lol.
So I'll start again. Corinne, Thanks. Right now our main cash crop is organic mixed hay, which we sell to horse and cattle people, once in a while a rabbit customer. We are working on getting our fields certified as organic. We would then be able to sell to organic dairies as well as other other outlets. As far as cooking abd baking go, with me anything goes. I just took a crumble cake out of the oven. My oventhese days is one of those medium countertop toater/broil/rost ovens things. As the elment in my main oven blow up a week ago. Making do for now, lol. I have a double side by side oven but the second of it's oven is a narrow one and finding dishes to fit is tricky, so I am rotating between two ovens and a stove top, lol. I love making soup!! and am to the point I make up my own recipes. Trying to do a bit more on the vegside. I canned, have maked a ricotta cheese in my crockpot, I love to bake and use a heating pad to raise dough(old farm house is a bit drafty)I like to make jam, jellies and pickle a variety of foods. I've make butter and an elderly neighbor lady taught me to make lye soap. I am hooked on the DIY network and Foodnetwork. Am working on making chainmaille jewlery, but am just a beginner at it. I finished a sample choker. In the garden is growing 2 types of zuchinni, burbless cukes, thai black pumpikins, italian green beans, soybeans, radishes, beets, turnips, collard greena, 4 kind of spinach, and a huge amount of sweet basil, lol. I just started a new plot and am planting it little by little and using black plastic to say ahead of the weeds. The plastic is recycled from a farmer friend.

Hi Kara, Thanks. I'm glad to be living here as well. Farming is not easier but it's worth it. Do you spin a lot? I love knitting with natural fibers. My first knitting project was socks, with 4 needles, lol I was so proud of the first pair I made for my husband and just about cried when he worn the heel through. Have been wanting to try felting. I am a very, very basic knitter. |
