I'm Shari, one of a group of four intrepid boomer-plus women who are working our tail feather off building our little farm.
We're located in the middle of nowhere... Beryl UT. Don't believe it? Our address says Beryl, but our mail comes into New Castle. There's only an elementary school... and it's 7 miles from here.
Our CLOSEST grocery store is 17 miles one way, as is the closest medical clinic (not emergency). The nearest fire department is 10 miles away.
Oh, we can see our neighbors... but we can't shout for them to hear us. Since everyone here has the same prefix for a phone number, you're likely to get only the last four digits from someone who gives you their phone number.
So, why am I here?
I've been searching for other like-minded women farmers so we can share our experiences.
I've got a blog where I journal most of our activities. Be sure to stop by and add a comment or two.
Oh, and the ONLY reason I have time at the computer is because it's so cotton-picking HOT!

Hi Alee,
Thanks for the very kind forum. I'm not too sure how many posts it takes to become a real True-Blue Farmgirl... but I'll work on it.
Robin from Outdoor Writer turned me on to MaryJanesFarm. I've seen the site before and bookmarked it. It's only because it's so hot right now that I have time to spif up my blog and do some serious networking.
I'm nearly overwhelmed by the scope and quality of this forum!

Welcome Shari!! I am in Manti..which some people consider to be in the middle of nowhere too..haha. We do give out 5 numbers here though...a 5 instead of the whole prefix and then the four numbers..since that is all we have to dial for here..I love it. I am glad you found us..and you are right..way way way too hot right now!!! Welcome to the group..always fun to have more Utah gals here!!

Thanks very much for the warm welcome!
If you don't hear from me for a few days, I'm busy reading and getting in tune with all the information.
So you know, our farm is "specializing" in sheep (meat, wool, and eventually breeding stock). We will also be selling eggs locally (somehow I've not figured out how to sell them online).
We do have a greenhouse, but our plans are "clouded"... gotta work on getting it organized and focused. We know we need it to extend our growing season, but beyond that... no single plan has emerged.

Hey, there, farmgirl! I'm just up over the Tushars to the north of you - right outside of Richfield in Elsinore. You are absolutely going to LOVE it here - these gals are fantastic. AND - what fun to hear that you're specializing in sheep - that's what we do, and I'd just love to talk with you about it. Welcome!!!
XOXO, Libbie

Thanks to all once again for the very kind welcome.
Libbie,
It's just too cool that I FINALLY meet someone online in my "neck of the woods" who is "into sheep".
I've got tons of questions about this wooly business. Unfortunately, my mentor isn't a marketer, so she's been unable to assist with moving products off the farm... and we all know, you can't pay the bills by stacking up wool.
Right now, I'm feeling like the nursery rhyme...
Baa, baa, black sheep, Have you any wool?
Yes sir! Yes sir! Three bags full!
I really do have three bags full of black merino hogget wool. I still need to get it skirted before I can do anything, but don't want to put a ton of time into it until I have an inkling of a plan for selling it.
Feel free to e-mail me. Who knows... maybe we can find a way to get together for a visit.

Hmmm sunshine,
I'm all ears... tell me who would be interested, and how would I find out how much it's worth.
I'm willing to work on skirting it, even though I'm not real sure of what I'm doing.

Sounds like you need to for sure market that wool to hand spinners. I would skirt it well, and either sell it as raw cheaper, or scour it and sell it for more, card it after scouring and sell it for more yet. Are all your sheep wool type? Or some meat type? I only have a couple sheep..Icelandics...and love them. Mine are just for wool and I spin my own, but there are others here who may be interested for sure in wool to spin. Or you could also contact spinning shops. (Heindselmans comes to mind..they have a shop in Provo and I think the other is in St. George or Cedar) I used to buy raw fiber to spin from a spinning and weaving shop (there are some in SLC) before I had sheep of my own. They sold raw and washed both as well as roving. Good luck!!!

Hello all!
Thanks, aunt jenny, for the thoughtful and informative reply. Being about 150 miles apart, maybe we can meet somewhere in the middle?
Becky... I always thought that was West BY GOD Virginia. I had friends many years ago who lived in Dry Branch West BY GOD Virginia.
Sherone, thanks for the welcome... I was born in Cheyenne and in 2000 made a trip back through Wyoming. We were "doing" the Oregon Trail by car... and we took all the really back roads staying as close as possible to the original trail. That gave us two weeks in Wyoming.
