I just received MJ book for my b'day! WOW..I'm not the only one! I am looking forward to learning from you as well as sharing some of me. I'm not very experienced with this computer, so please help guide me... I recently purchased 2.5 acres of raw land here in the Inland Empire. We are 1 hour north of San Diego, 1 hour east of the ocean. I grew up in San Francisco, and now I live in the country. I married a redneck (he's a dream) and somehow I've been transformed into this rare species, a farmgirl... I have a veggie garden that is over 5000sq feet, it keeps me very busy. I've just learned to can tomatoes, pickles and corn. I also own a small business, a hair salon, I work behind the chair 3 days a week, and take care of my 2 step-sons (even dreamier). I love all things old, and love to make everything homemade. I look forward to making new friends here and sharing my ideas, my head never shuts up...if I could only make the days longer, weeks longer, months,years...then maybe I could get it all done!!

Welcome Lisa! It sounds like you have a great set up there! Did you know the Palouse where MaryJane (and I!) live is also called the "Inland Empire"? How funny is that?

Welcome Lisa, your garden sounds wonderful. You will really enjoy all of the kind & supportive people here. I moved to Oregon about 5 years ago, from Crocket (North/East of San Francisco) and I love the country life. It suited me way before I got to make the change from the big city. So welcome and I look forward to getting to know you.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome. Hope to get to know you all soon. Hope this doesn't sound disrepectful but... Can someone explain the whole apron thing? I don't think I've read that chapter in the book yet. Is there special meaning? Is it a symbol?

Aprons.....what can I say? Don't they just make you feel "homey"? There is a lot of info on aprons in the last magazine and in MJ's Stitchin' Room book and she sells patterns and such but it's not really anything about that I don't think. I believe it's just what they stand for, hard work, practicality, and trying to look your best at the same time. Think about aprons and you get the warm fuzzies!
We are happy you are here, and heck NO, you aren't direspecting anything! Your new farmgirl buddy, Cindy

So I'm just wonderin- what exactly is a redneck-in California??? I know what it is down here
The apron thing - hmmm- I don't know it just kinda keeps us feminine while we work I guess. So maybe it's a statement about ourselves. Farmgirls aren't afraid to be feminine, just like we were created and work hard too. Maybe a symbol is a good description. Welcome to the forum and if you want to meet some girls whose heads don't shut off go to the Apron-Sew Along- Now those girls dont even sleep, I dont think!! Lots of apron talk there!!! Glad to have ya here! Autumn

Lisa-
It seems like everyone loves aprons for a different reason. Some love them because it reminds them of their foremothers who baked and took care of the family. Some love them because they are useful and keep clothes clean, and some of us love them because they are just another farmgirl flair and another way to dress up our everyday outfits and make humdrum tasks more special :)

DeepsouthMama - What is a California Redneck....oh let me count the ways... He starts his tractor with a screwdriver! He likes his levi's 4 days worn in. He loves to pee on the backyard fence. He know how to skin a rabbit! He picks up snakes. He puts lizards in his mouth. He hates wine. He's never seen a live play or musical. He can't dance. He knows everything about anything that has a motor attached. He can build anything out of nothing. He doesnt mind getting dirty. He leaves me love notes on post-it notes! He looks amazing in his stetson. He likes country music. He has a big truck and drives with the "I'm bigger than you theory". Wish I wasn't so tired cause I know there's a funnier list, maybe I'll add to it tomorrow!
I'm a very lucky farmgirl.....good night ya'll...sweet dreams of Calif Rednecks!!!!!!!

Glad you found this forum, Lisa! You seem to me like an apron gal...! I love the redneck list and see some crossover with my DH. My father and brothers (to my knowledge) didn't need to stop and pee anywhere they chose. Think maybe I moved to redneck country myself when I married

Glad ya'll got a good chuckle, may I please add to my list... just yesterday, we took our boat out, he desided to put his fishing pole in the lake, but didn't want to stand there holding it, so he taped a plastic fork to a branch, removed the 2 inside teeth of the fork, which allowed a support for his pole. Clever, yes, but oh soooooo redneck! (no- he didn't catch anything) Now, about this apron thing, I think you all should sit back and wait....this California gal is going to put together a little somethin', somethin' with "bling, bling" California style.....I wont promise it will be soon, but when it's ready, I'll be sure to post it up right!
