A hot and humid howdy to all ya'll farm and ranch girls. After spending most of my life raising kids and animals, I never realized that farming had become a life style. I never even liked calling myself a rancher (or farmer) because here in Florida my little place was only 10 acres. But I'm learning that farming is a frame of mind as much as anything else.

I'm 52, mother of three fantastic children (Cave Woman soon to 28, teaches at Florida State and is almost done with her doctorate. The "Middle Child," 26 year old Nick Nack Paddy Wack, married a Texas A and M boy and is living in Dallas where she is a not only a pretty savy financial specialist, but also presented me with a fine grand child, my first. Sweet Pea, my 23 year old son, lives and works in Korea as a teacher.

My husband and I own a roofing company. This last year has been the first time that I have ever stayed on the farm. Back when I was raising horses, I worked off the ranch. I can't tell you what a luxury it is to stay on my own dear piece of land and not have to spend the best part of each day working for someone else.

I quilt, I sew, I knit, and spent many years in the restaurant biz. I spent a brief stint working at a large commercial dairy, and for 13 years I managed a day care. Besides horses, I've raised chickens, rabbits and ducks. Severe arthritis has kept me from gardening, but we are building our first raised bed the first week end in October and hopefully that will be easier on the knees. And for those of you who don't live in Southern Florida, our growing season doesn't start for another couple of weeks.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you. This seems like a wonderful place to be!

Welcome, Martha!

What an interesting life you have led so far! Love the nicknames you have for your children! Do you have any animals at the present time?

Hi, Martha! Great to meet you! So how did 'Cave Woman' get her nickname?

Welcome Martha! We used to vacation on Sanibel Island many years ago...it was quite lovely. Did some sight seeing in Ft. Myers as well. I especially enjoyed the Ford/Edision homes...all those exotic plants from around the world.

Sounds like you have nearly done it all! I'm sure you will be able to teach us a few new tricks, and we will return the favor if you'd like. Lots of fun, knowledge, and kindness to be had here at the farm. You've found the nicest group on the web! Welcome, so glad you have joined us!
Blessings,
Rhonda

Hi, Martha, and Welcome! I know how you feel. I only have a part time job that takes me away from the farm for a day and a half, but I would love to eventually stay home full time. Right now tho, I do love my job and my bosses, so I guess I have it pretty easy! Looking forward to hearing more about you, your kids and your farm!
