Roseanna Nicholson (#8415) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning an Intermediate Level Birds Merit Badge!

“Done in partnership with fellow Farmgirl, Elizabeth N. First, we made suet cakes out of pork lard, peanut butter, oatmeal, cornmeal, mixed bird food, and chopped walnuts. We divided our suet into paper muffin liners and chilled them.

Later, we built four new bird houses with an inch and a half holes.

We had blue jays, black-capped chickadees, white-breasted nuthatches, downy woodpeckers, hairy woodpeckers, and red-bellied woodpeckers come and dine on our homemade suet cakes.

A pair of tree swallows raised a brood of young in one nesting box, while the House Wrens were busy filling the rest with sticks.”

“I made an apple BakeOver, applesauce, dried apples, and even had an Waldorf salad. Making dinner was a delight! I started with roasted chicken with apples and potatoes, seasoned with rosemary. Rea Nakanishi (Lacey, #8284) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning an Intermediate Level In the Garden Merit Badge!

“I had fun in the garden again. I made a raised bed from 2x4's and bricks. I Added green growing bags for the plant area (otherwise my dog would replant them for me!). The soil in the bags keep the moisture in and contained. Also made my bird house and used my tin cans to make a mobile. I like the idea of recycling cans into a project.”

Rea Nakanishi (Lacey, #8284) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an Intermediate Level Families Forever Merit Badge!

“For the badge Families Forever, I started tracking television time. The time the television was on was an average of 3 hours and 30 minutes. This was about 25 hours a week. when you take 25 hours and think what you can do, it really makes you think about time. With the extra time I could be more productive reading and helping the grand children with their education.

It was good to write this time spent down on paper and explore options.”

“Knowing some wonderful elders in their nineties has been wonderful. for this badge, I have spent over forty hours in the company of my elders. They know many stories of the town, the people, and celebrities that have resided here. The elders have had unique and professional jobs in their lives. I enjoy every minute that I'm with them!”

Rea Nakanishi (Lacey, #8284) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an Expert Level Languages/Culture Merit Badge!

“The Gion Matsuri (Gion Festival) is Kyoto's biggest annual festival. It's a multi-day event that is equal parts religious observance and noisy street festival. The Gion Matsuri is not just Kyoto's biggest festival—it's one of Japan's biggest annual events.

I plan on making okonomiyaki pancakes (pancakes with vegetables). The pancakes are one of the most requested foods. Along with mochi (pounded rice) and green tea ice cream!

I have made these pancakes in the past and my family loves them!”

Rea Nakanishi (Lacey, #8284) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a Beginner Level Farmgirl Jubilee Merit Badge!

“The definition of jubilee: A special anniversary especially a 50th anniversary, a celebration of such an anniversary, a jubilation, a season of celebration. My parents celebrated their 50th anniversary, and I hosted a party of 45 people for their special day.

I read about the British Diamond Jubilee. The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant saw more than 1,000 boats escort the Queen and Royal Family aboard a specially decorated royal barge down the River Thames. Sir Paul McCartney was the final act on a night that ended when the Queen lit a beacon to mark her reign. The public could participate in watching the parades and the public parties.”

Rea Nakanishi (Lacey, #8284) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an Expert Level Going Green Merit Badge!

“I've been getting my house more up to date with all natural products. I use a drying rack and clothesline to cut down on energy use. My house was recently painted and used a non-toxic paint. Since I only have one carpet that will be replaced soon, which I look forward to doing. I have a lot of books on cleaning and gardening that I like to share, I also have a lot of MaryJane's magazines that are very informative as well.

This level reminded me to go to the flooring store to check out some new floor to put in my bedroom!”

Rea Nakanishi (Lacey, #8284) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an Intermediate Level Staying Green Merit Badge!

“I've made several homemade cleaning products. My grandchildren have a lot of allergies. I use vinegar and water to clean countertops, floors and bathrooms. I even use vinegar in the rinse water in the washing machine instead of fabric softeners.

For myself, I like to make sugar scrubs. I've made rosemary sugar scrub as well as lemon and orange scented sugar scrubs. The scrubs are so easy to make with just a few ingredients. I use almond oil sugar and essential oils. I find it very refreshing to use on your feet and let them soak after a long day of work. I tried to keep most ingredients on hand—especially the cleaning products. I've found it easy to write the ingredients and how much right on the label of the bottle so it's easy to refill.”

Rea Nakanishi (Lacey, #8284) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an Expert Level Leave It Better Than You Found It Merit Badge!

“In my town, there's a group that you can join to clean up different areas. So I joined them to clean up around a small park and roadway. I was surprised how much garbage the three of us picked up in just a matter of minutes. After the weekend, it always seems to be the messiest even though there are garbage and recycling cans nearby.

I plan to join the group again. It's a nice group of people doing good for our community. I watched the great Pacific garbage patch video. It's always sad to see how much garbage humans create that impact nature.

The Ocean Cleanup says it could rid the GPGP of 50% of its waste in five years. Conventional methods of clearing the water, like vessels and nets, would take vast sums of money and thousands of years. It's sad to see how much damage is done with the products that we create.”

Rea Nakanishi (Lacey, #8284) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an Intermediate Level Living Zero Waste Merit Badge!

“This was an interesting audit. Sometimes you don't really realize how much waste you have. The three things I realized was how much junk mail there was, my habits of buying water in water bottles, and how many plastic bags were given out when I go to a different state.

So what I usually do now is bring my own water container and cut down on buying bottled water. I recycle all the junk mail and bring my own bags when I visit in another state. I visit thrift stores for fun and sometimes you find a unique item that's easily reused. I've also done some major cleaning and I donate to our local SPCA thrift shop.

Trying to live zero waste makes you think of how much garbage one actually produces.”

“Single-use items like water bottles were part of my daily use at work. Now I take a reusable thermos which is a much nicer water bottle. Bottled water here costs about $0.25 so in about a month and a half I've already paid for my thermos.

When I go to the store I take my own reusable bag store bags here cost $0.10 apiece so 10 bags pay for my $1.00 reusable bag. Also I went to the thrift store and found a pretty red vase for $2.50. I also stopped taking plastic forks to work and just used one of my own. This was not difficult change. Over the lifespan of my thermos I can save hundreds of dollars as well as taking my own reusable bag. and buying a vase at the thrift store probably saved me $10, so this seems like a win for the environment and myself.”

“I just had to buy a refrigerator so I found one that is definitely more energy efficient. The last one was 20 + years old.

I finished changing all the outside light bulbs to LEDs, changed the filters on my H/AC system and air purifier. The last thing on my list will be to paint my laundry room with zero-voc paint!

This badge was great it reminded me to change the bulbs and filters!”

Karen Martell (Jokamartell, #8422) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning a Beginner Level Shopping Green Merit Badge!

“To earn the beginner level of the shopping green badge, I gathered up a collection of various sized bags to carry in my car. I also added a pouch to my purse that carries 3 bags that can be folded tiny so I am never without a bag when shopping.

I enjoyed creating a “station” in my car to keep the bags contained.”

“While shopping, I'm looking for and purchasing products that have recyclable/biodegradable packing. I'm also using vinegar, baking soda, and water to clean my home. I recently began buying and using laundry soap sheets that have biodegradable packaging.

It has been going well and my hubby is picking up on looking at the packaging of the products we buy. As far as using natural cleaners, I'm excited to have a clean home without the cleaner toxins.”
