Tina VanDaam (#8431, TinaTina) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning an Intermediate MaryJane's Better Butter Badge!
"I earned this badge by making butter and using the buttermilk from the waste of making butter
This merit badge was so fun. I have never made butter before and it was very enlighten to make my own butter. I can't wait to make some more, this time honey butter from our own bee hive"

Debbie Klann (#770, debbieklann) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning an Expert UFOs Badge!
"This badge has been a long time coming…. I started it in 2016. I had quite a list of unfinished projects. I re-evaluated every once in awhile… would someone else enjoy this more than I would? What would it take to finish this? Did I even like this anymore? Did I still LOVE it and want to finish it now??
During the last 8 years…yikes!…I started and finished other projects that weren’t on the list but I FINALLY got them completed!!! I think I am the most proud of this badge…it’s a huge feeling of accomplishment for me. I will never have that many projects going at once again. I have posted on the Merit Badge Chit Chat thread."

Cordelia Carpenter (#8585, Corcarel) has received a certificate of achievement in Outpost for earning a Beginner Wild Game Badge!
"I am applying for the beginner level of the Wild Game badge. I first researched common wild game in my area and made some notes on the species I was interested in. I then researched health codes and safety regulations for handling wild game meat at the taxidermy and meat processing shop I work at. I also studied as much as I could about hunting rules for my state, including how much acreage is required for private land hunting, what species requires tags and licenses, and seasonal hunting rules.
I did all of this in preparation for hunting for the very first time, which I was very excited to do. It was interesting and exciting learning about all the safety, time, knowledge, and even conservation rules that goes into hunting and processing your own game. I look forward to achieving the next two levels of this badge."

Susan Wich (#7816) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning an Intermediate Crochet Badge!
"My project was a granny square shawl. I love how quickly crochet builds the item! I used to knit and it seemed to take forever. The main stitch was a double crochet, with some chain, slip and single crochet stitches as well. There were several color changes, and I love the edging!
I worked on this with my sisters over a few months.
I love it! I accidentally bought too much yarn, so actually made a second one. I plan to donate them to a nursing home- I started making the first one for my mother in law when she went into a nursing home, but she has since passed away. So I will donate them in her memory."

Shennandoah Connor (#8578) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning an Intermediate Embroidery Badge!
"For this badge I embroidered my sister of the year and first badges for me to earn expert level. I learned a couple of new stitches and techniques in the process. First I learned about print and stitch stabilizer that dissolves in warm water when you’re done. Man what a time saver! It does make the needles a little funky, so I have to wipe the needle with alcohol every so often so it still pushes through the fabric and stabilizer. I stuck the patterns onto muslin similar to the farmgirl badge I received and carted them with me on vacation, work trips ,etc.
I learned how to use short and long stitch and painting with thread techniques on the birds and bee good to Mother Earth badges. To give the badges a little more stability, after it finished stitching and removed the temp stabilizer I ironed on fusible interfacing. Then I arranged the badges around my membership badge and began stitching them onto my tote bag that I use for my farmgirl projects, binder, and notebook.
At first I wasn’t sure they would turn out well but I actually love them! I carry my bag with me almost everywhere and continue to work on sewing the other badges I’ve earned. People are surprised to learn that I did it all by hand and what went in to each badge. Been a great conversation starter and I’ve handed out some sisterhood cards for those who want to learn more. I have a long way to go before I’m finished sewing badges (if ever lol), but I will run out of room on my bag before that happens. So I found an idea for a stitch and quilt as you go hexagon wall hanging for when the time comes. That will hang up in my craft room or living room and be both inspiration and a talking point for guests."

Patricia Krug (#8551) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning a Beginner Carpe Cocoa: Seize the Chocolate Badge!
"The book "The True History of Chocolate" was interesting, but a hard read. I found it on Amazon and bought it. You definitely learned a lot about chocolate and how it all came about. Dark chocolate has a bitter taste to it, milk chocolate powder was added to it and white chocolate was created by accident by Nestle. Did not know that.
It took me a long time to read the book, but I kept plugging away at it. Researching the chocolate was fun and interesting."

Patricia Krug (#8551) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning an Intermediate Carpe Cocoa: Seize the Chocolate Badge!
"It takes about 400 cocoa beans to produce 1 pound of chocolate. No wonder the good stuff is expensive. I tempered chocolate the microwave method. You still had to have a lot of patience. I made homemade chocolate pudding. Definitely better than the box version, not as sweet. I also made homemade chocolate syrup. Really good on ice cream.
The chocolate pudding and chocolate syrup I have made several times. Real good. I definitely appreciate the home-made versions, and they are so easy to make too."

Patricia Krug (#8551) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning an Expert Carpe Cocoa: Seize the Chocolate Badge!
"I made the ganache and used it on cupcakes like a frosting. You really had to watch the heavy cream closely. I tried to make a chocolate drink out of the can cocoa, but it did not turn out so good, even after adding some sugar it wasn't very good.
I made 4 different truffles. - Chocolate-dipped in chocolate and rolled in sprinkles.
- No Bake Cheesecake-with cherry pie filling rolled in white candy melts.
- Easy Oreo- dipped in white chocolate and rolled in sprinkles.
- Gingerbread- rolled in white chocolate and sprinkled with more gingerbread crumbs.
Everything turned out great. The Gingerbread and Oreos were the hit, but the other truffles were liked as well."

Patricia Krug (#8551) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a Beginner Farmgirl Gratitude Badge!
"I've been keeping a gratitude journal for over a month. School started on 9/3/2024 and I'm in 9th grade English and the teacher does a gratitude journal every day with the class. We also read 10 minutes for independent reading time every day too, so the book is very interesting, and I guess you can be grateful for anything.
The book really opens up your eyes on how there are so many things to be grateful for. Even the little things in life. Warm socks, someone out of the blue waves at you in the car. I'm grateful I have the book to read and to open my eyes to be grateful for the little thing in life."

Emily Nellinger (#8229) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a Beginner Her-story Badge!
"For my merit badge, Her-Story, I googled who is an influential woman who is still in her position of power, which led me to Vice President, Kamala Harris.
I continued my research online and checked my library for any biographies written about her.
I learned a lot about her through my research, and her memoir, "The Truths We Hold: An American Journey." Some things I learned: 1. She was born in Oakland, CA on October 20, 1964. 2. She attended Westmount High School and graduated college from Howard University. She graduated from UC Hastings College of Law. 3. She became the first female vice president and the highest-ranking female official in the history of the USA. 4. She is also the first vice president of African and Asian American descent. 5. She met her husband, Douglas on a blind date through a friend. Her step-children call her Momala. 6. As a district attorney, she fought against banks that ran home loan scams and was able to win money back for the defendants. 7. She also ran programs aimed at lowering truancy rates, getting school attendance up, and providing positive assistance to children and families."

Lacey Nakanishi (#8284) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an Expert Community Action Badge!
"Wrote a letter to the local newspaper regarding the trash around the town. So in doing so, I found out about a group in town that picks up trash. So I joined the group and about 15 of us go in an area and clean it up! It has been very good for community. Small actions can generate great results.
This has turned out to be a fun group to work with and we see results."

Lacey Nakanishi (#8284) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a Beginner Public Service Badge!
"This has been a year of attending city councils. A very busy year researching voting for our local measures about town improvements. The ballot measures for the state - so much to take in this year.
Attended the league of woman voters to listen to the candidates for the senate.
Watching some of the presidential debates and having discussions about the two running for president. Voted in my county, voted in the state and the federal elections.
Well, glad the elections are over."

Candy Hogan (#8283) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an Expert Know Your Roots Badge!
"For the last 4 years, starting in 2020 when the Covid pandemic hit our world, one side of our family stopped all our family holiday gatherings. Recently the matriarch of that side of my husband's family passed away.
I invited everyone to a pre-Thanksgiving at our ranch to regather, reminisce and share family history.
I cooked for 2 days, cleaned house and decorated. Those family members that could attend had fun talking and eating.
It was fun for all."

"Decorating my house with green starts with all my indoor plants. I have 12 major large plants and 2 dozen jars of cuttings rooting at any one time.
When I bought a new mattress it was organic bamboo fibers. Sheets are organic as well as the comforter.
When painting my rooms I use a non toxic zero voc paint.
I always try to buy and use as many organic products as possible."

Lacey Nakanishi (#8284) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning an Intermediate Build It Green Badge!
"This is the posting I put on the merit badge chit chat forum.
Hi I am working on the build it green badge. The area I live in is a very green conscious town.
In my town we have several building that are awarded the silver and gold LEEDS certifications.
Here is the explanation of LEEDS. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the world's most widely used green building rating system.
LEED certification provides a framework for healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings, which offer environmental, social and governance benefits. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement, and it is backed by an entire industry of committed organizations and individuals paving the way for market transformation.
It was good to think about how my town really embraces green living."

Lacey Nakanishi (#8284) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an Intermediate Farmgirl Jubilee Badge!
"In April I held a spring jubilee.
Made flyers and planned the event. The plan for the day started with lunch followed by tie dying, potpourri, and bingo games. The take homes were notebooks for gratitude, embroidery, quilling kit, and quilting materials. It was a fun day for all.
Later on I brought a plate of cookies to my neighbor who is always so helpful and delightful to talk to.
Fun times with new and sisterhood friends."

Cindy Kinion (#6058) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a Beginner Community Service Badge!
"When contemplating a way that I could give back to the community, I wanted to find an organisation that could utilize my talents in the healthcare domain. I had always been interested in doing an overseas medical mission after hearing a nurse speak at a conference about her experience in Nepal.
The first organisation that I researched was Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS). As a member of the Lutheran church, I would often hear about the projects they were engaged in. “ALWS envisages a world where love comes to life; a world where all people live in just societies; where we are all empowered to achieve our full potential, uphold our rights & the rights of others for a life with peace & dignity; where we are all inspired to remember, welcome & support those who suffer from poverty & injustice.” I had enquired about joining their medical mission team to perform eye surgeries in Cambodia. I went through the application process & joined the team at the end of 2019, only for our mission trip to be cancelled due to the COVID pandemic.
Shortly thereafter, my husband & I moved to the U.S., so I started researching other organisations with a similar vision. I had heard a lot about Medecins sans Frontieres (Doctors without Borders). They are an organisation that brings medical care to people affected by conflict, disasters, epidemics, & social exclusion. I looked at the application process but, unfortunately, they required a minimum commitment of 9-12 months &, at this stage, I couldn’t afford the time or financial commitment required.
It was then that a good friend & work colleague told me about Health Talents International (HTI). HTI’s mission statement is “to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ through teaching & healing ministries”. Their goal is a restoration of health, described biblically as wholeness in mind, spirit, body & social relationships. The work is focused on Guatemala, with outreach to Nicaragua. I joined their surgical mission team for the October 2024 trip to Clinica Ezell. The focus of our trip was gynecological & general abdominal surgeries. Over the course of the week, we performed 53 surgeries for the rural Mayan & latino population living in the area. I journalled each day of the trip in a book I had purchased before I left called “A Treasure Seeker’s Travel Guide: A Training, 30-day Acts Devotional, Travel Journal & Debrief Guide” designed for individuals as they embark on missionary work. I had the most incredible experience. We stayed in accommodation on-site, did 8 hour shifts each day, shared meals in a common dining area (we had an amazing team of local cooks & kitchen hands – some who even taught us how to make tortillas on the grill). My journal includes stories of the beautiful people I met each day; the stories of their long suffering with what we might consider a simple medical condition; the stories of their journeys to get to the clinic – usually hours on the back of a motorcycle; & the stories of their lives in this Indigenous community. On the final day of our mission, 10 members of our group joined Rita & Carey (U.S missionaries who now live full time in Guatemala), and we went to help serve meals in a feeding centre for local children. For some of these children, it’s the only meal they will get for the day. Others bring their younger infant siblings swaddled on their backs. They were so grateful for our presence. This community service opportunity was so incredibly fulfilling. My patients were so affectionate – bestowing us with hugs & blessings as they left the ward. I went to serve & share God’s love with the people of Guatemala, but received so much more in return. So much so that I look forward to returning again in 2025.
I have shared my experience with my farmgirl sisters in the Wildflowers Henhouse & the Scattered Prairie Henhouse."

Shennandoah Connor (#8578) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning an Intermediate Gaining Ground Badge!
"I've been composting for ten years now. I started with a small cone shaped composter, then a spinning barrel composter. I found that both would get anaerobic easily and it was hard to get the compost out -- especially the elevated spinning one. When we moved to our current home four years ago, I picked up some free pallets and created an open compost system. It has worked very well and is easy to access and turn. I also employed the banner composting method in several beds, also known as composting in place. It too worked very well. However, when a high energy puppy adopted me on my Christmas Day walk, I soon learned that she was a digger and loved looking in the compost for snacks. Which isn't healthy for them. The other dogs picked up her bad habit so I had to stop composting in place and start blocking the compost piles from the dogs. Then a cat moved into my potting shed and also adopted me, and he can climb over the top so I do need to add a top now to keep him out.
When I got chickens I picked up some more pallets and set up a second compost area by the chicken yard for composting the bedding and manure.
I have not kept track of how many buckets since I started with the current compost set up in 2020, however, I can tell you its been at least enough to build two perennial beds and to top dress my asparagus and strawberry beds for the past three seasons. I also have started top dressing my lasagna mulch in the walkway areas with the composted manure so I can plant living walkways of strawberry cover in the spring.
Being in south Texas I can cheat a bit and take a more "passive" approach - meaning less turning - since the heat and humidity does most of the work for me. I have the compost piles in dappled shade so they don't dry out and have never had an issue with odor or excessive critter activity (besides my own pets and the occasional squirrel with a penchant for bananas). My biggest challenge is getting enough raw material for the compost. I have been trying to find some local sources of vegetable scraps and coffee grounds in solid amounts, but haven't had any takers yet. Been relying on what I can get from friends and family and the occasional Starbucks run, along with what's comes from my garden. So I am not to a point where it is a total closed loop system and must supplement with purchased compost or with green manure and other methods, but I am confident I can keep building on my system.
Since we have wooded acreage I am also setting up a leaf mold corral. Most of the leaves I put whole into the perennial beds, but I do try to either mulch in place or pick up what's in the walkways and such since we have copperheads that can blend in to the leaves. I want to use the leaf mold to start making my own potting soil mix for the plants I propagate. Looking at mixing it with shredded paper so I can stop buying bags of potting mix and also avoid peat moss (non renewable resource) and coconut coir (which doesn't work and is shipped long distances)."

Shennandoah Connor (#8578) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an Intermediate Farmgirl Spirit Badge!
"We have had quite a few families move into the neighborhood, but since many people are on large tracts and have gates it's been difficult to show up unannounced with goodies. So what I decided to do is to host a monthly "Front Porch Friday" March thru November and invite the whole neighborhood for a good old fashioned meet and greet on the first Friday of every month. The neighborhood has a Facebook group so I post the events on there and send out reminders leading up to the event. We have some light refreshments and also encourage people to contribute if they wish.
It turned out great! All the neighbors loved it. We moved into the neighborhood in 2020, but according to the folks who lived here before then they used to do regular meetups prior to Covid. We have a great mix of people show up to the events, and all generations including kids playing and interacting. They asked us to keep it going. Our last one was December but consensus is to skip Jan and Feb so will pick it up again in March. I am also designing a flyer to put at the mailboxes for those that don't know about the Facebook group.
Bringing everyone together allowed us to put names to faces and houses, and exchange phone numbers and resources with folks. We have also discussed neighborhood emergency response as we do have several elderly neighbors who are house bound. Most of the neighborhood are veterans (like my hubby) and homesteaders. So we also share chicken keeping tips etc and I give out eggs when I have extras. Its really helped bring the neighborhood together (though its always been a very neighborly place its just made it better). Our street wants to do a block party in the summer and there's talks of game nights and other events."

Shennandoah Connor (#8578) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an Intermediate Lost Art of Letter Writing Badge!
"For this badge I started by reading The Art of the Personal Letter by Margaret Shepherd. I found the first part of the book the most useful, and appreciated the ideas around selecting the right materials and such. I also appreciated that she allowed for handwritten and typed letters, as I have terrible handwriting and I have a dyslexic daughter who struggles with handwriting. However, it also inspired me to get a book on improving my handwriting as it is something I have wanted to do but have always struggled with. I can't even read my own writing sometimes lol.
It went well and has inspired me to get back to pen pals. I have had many pen pals in my life (including one in France and one in New Zealand). I had one I found through Grit magazine but she stopped responding and I fear she has fallen ill. I also had a friend from a creative writing class whom I have exchanged creative letters - we do a different theme for each one. Some were written in the vein of stories we did from specific writing assignments. One as a ransom letter, another as an episode of law and order. He has had health issues so he hasn't been able to respond but going to ping him on Facebook and see if he is able to start again. It was so fun to come up with new themes each time!"

Christine Kenney (Bellepic, #8680) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a Beginner Gaining Ground Badge!
"Hopefully this blog post on the topic is accessible: https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2025/01/worm-factory.html
TLDR- I read both books and restarted an in-house worm ranch.
The worms seem happy, I'm getting extra exercise bringing food downstairs to them and I am excited to start topping up my planters with worm castings from the supers when spring planting is in full swing."
