Tina Vandaam (TinaTina, #8437) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning a Beginner My Fair Farmgirl Badge!
"I earned this badge by learning the difference between cruelty free and organic health and beauty products. I also made my own minty toothpaste. I also looked into the ingredients to make other like shampoo and lotion and bath salts.
This was very interesting as I didn't realize the things they do when they used animals for testing. I also made my own minty toothpaste."

Debbie Fischer (BlessedInColorado, #1582) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an Expert Lost Art of Letter Writing Badge!
"I participated in my first Mail Art Swap in April. I enjoyed it so much I participated in May’s as well.
April's theme was Geometric Shapes and Grace was my partner; this one was a challenge for me but I finally got it! I made a hanging Dodecahedron.
May was Language and MaryJane was my partner. I chose the Language of Friendship.
Aprils Geometric Shapes did give me problems I will admit but Grace was so gracious to hang it in her kitchen window.
I was so nervous to have MaryJane as my partner for May Swap Language. But I did not need to be. I just put my heart and soul into the Little Book. Maryjane said she could open a different page everyday for some happy.
Thank you both Grace and MaryJane for being the perfect partners for our monthly Mail Art. I could only post one photo but you can see my Geometric Project online.

Debbie Fischer (BlessedInColorado, #1582) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning a Beginner Knitting Badge!
"I have been knitting for years, since I was 16, simple potholders, dishcloths, many baby blankets and 5 pairs of socks.
While I admit I am not very good and I have trouble following patterns, but I do it. Socks are my favorite thing to knit, but it has been many years so I am going to start another pair.
But, for my Beginner knitting project, I made a multi color corner to corner baby blanket. Surprisingly I thought it was an easy pattern, even though it took me forever to finish it. And for me it was not so uneven.
Personally I believe it turned out pretty darn good for someone like me who cannot have any of her knitting projects over the years turn out quite right but my socks. But, now this blanket! Is it perfect? No, but it is so much better than many of my projects.
So, I see another one of these baby blankets in my future. I need to be a faster knitter that for sure."

Christine Kenney (Bellepic, #8680) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning an Intermediate Let's Get Physical Badge!
"Another month training done and I completed the Surf City half marathon Feb 2, 2025 with a time of 2 hours and 15 minutes!
I blogged about it here: https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2025/02/lets-get-physical-intermediate.html
I feel stronger and faster than I have ever been since pregnancy. I ran the marathon at a pace almost a minute faster per mile than I expected!
Yet I'm sure my sisters can relate, I am still learning to appreciate my body for what it can do rather than obsessing over being a specific size or fat percentage. To be continued!"

Gwendolyn Deaton (gwennierenee, #8112) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning a Beginner Going Green Badge!
"I started out by reading all the labels on my cleaning products. I have chosen to make as many as I possibly can myself, using as many natural products as possible. I started my journal, recording recipes and ideas for greener living. I have researched many recipes and found so many to use for natural cleaning products, and so far, I have been pleased with all of the products I have made for myself. As far as a mission statement, there are only two of us here so it's more of an agreement to try for greener living in all things.
I am enjoying using the products that I have made for myself, and I feel so much better about the ingredients I have been using rather than the more toxic products."

Gwendolyn Deaton (gwennierenee, #8112) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning an Intermediate Going Green Badge!
"So far, I have made my own laundry detergent, my own cold processed soap, and an all-purpose cleaner. I use the all purpose cleaner to clean my floor and I use vinegar to clean my windows, mirrors, etc.
I am very happy with the products that I made. The laundry detergent needs to be able to dissolve in the washer before washing the clothes otherwise it kind of clumps up on the clothes. And I truly love the soap and wish I had been making it my whole life. My skin feels so much cleaner now. I am currently researching recipes for shampoo bars."

Gwendolyn Deaton (gwennierenee, #8112) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning an Expert Going Green Badge!
"I have always recycled but have now been watching my purchases to try and buy the ones with the least packaging. We also installed a clothesline in the backyard. I have racks in my laundry room that I can use to hang my clothes on hangers to dry if the weather does not permit me to hang my clothes outside. It's been quite a while since I've done any interior painting in my home, but when I do have the need to do so, I always try to find products with the least toxins. I have allergies so I need to make sure any products I use won't trigger a reaction. I had all the carpet removed from my home when I purchased it and had all of the hard wood floors refurbished.
I am so pleased with the results of this badge project. I am thrilled with the changes I have made. I went to two different friends' homes and helped them with making green choices. I don't have many books as I use the library as much as possible, but any books I do have are free to be used by anyone that asks."

Gwendolyn Deaton (gwennierenee, #8112) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning a Beginner Recycling Badge!
"My local garbage pickup service has provided all homes with dumpster like trashcans to use for recycling. The can came with a list of accepted items imprinted on the lid. I have recycle bins in my kitchen that I place all things that are recycleable into. The trashman picks up the recycling weekly.
I have actually been recycling for years so really there is not much change in my home from this project."

Gwendolyn Deaton (gwennierenee, #8112) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning an Intermediate Recycling Badge!
"Again, I have a recycling dumpster outside that is emptied weekly and bins in my living room where I put all cans, jars, bottles, paper, etc. I have been doing this for years.
No real difference in my life. I have found things that can be recycled that I didn't realize could before. I am always on the search for more ways I can do things to help."

Gwendolyn Deaton (gwennierenee, #8112) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning an Expert Recycling Badge!
"I have been recycling for years, but I did purchase and take some recycling bins to my daughters house and showed her things she could recycle that she was unaware of. I also talked with my best friend about recycling and she told me she already does, but I was also able to explain a few things she didn't already know she could recycle.
I had a lot of fun working with my daughter, helping her to set up a recycling center in her home. Unfortunately, her garbage service doesn't provide pickup for recycling, but there is a center near her home where she can drop things off."

Gwendolyn Deaton (gwennierenee, #8112) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning a Beginner Shopping Green Badge!
"I have more than a dozen reusable shopping bags. I make it a point to keep them in my car so I always have them with me when I shop.
I have a lot less waste in the way of shopping bags. I have often gone to the store and had a cashier put only one or two items per bag and by the time I get home from my shopping trip I have half a garbage bag full of shopping bags. I much prefer using the reusable bags as there is so little waste in that way. I even have reusable produce bags that I use."

"I have checking and comparing packing on most items I purchase. I have switched brands on many items because of reduced packaging or biodegradable packaging. I have been making my own cleaning products and plan on making more. I have compiled a list of of recipes for cleaning and skin care products using natural ingredients and I am looking forward to trying them all.
I am really pleased with this. Changing brands was mostly painless. I will miss a few items probably, but I do feel better using products that are better for the earth and my environment. "

Andrew Maliszewski (andyzewski, #8297) has received a certificate of achievement in Outpost for earning a Beginner Farmgirl's Best Friend Badge!
"I have owned many pets over the years, starting when I was a child and we had family pets to being an adult and having my own pets. As a family, we had a German Shepard, my parents got him about 6 months after I was born, so we grew up together. Because of me being a toddler and pulling his tail and ears, I definitely wasn't his favorite.
We took in a stray cat when I was a teenager. She was mostly an outdoor cat but did like to snuggle in your lap in the evenings.
My first pet as an adult was my dog Sugar. I decided to adopt a dog after I purchased my first house at the age of 25. I went to the pound and walked the lane of dog pens, all of them barking and jumping at me as if yelling, "Pick me! Pick me!" Sugar was the only one who didn't do that, she was sitting at the back of the pen with her back to the wall just looking at me as if to say, "Pick me or don't, I don't really care." I knew then that she was the ONE. We spent the next 12 years together, and I mean together. She went everywhere with me and we snuggled like crazy. Because she was MY first pet, she will always be special.
Having to make the difficult decision to put down animals when the time comes (I've had to do that with 3 so far, the most recent in 2023) I have been gun-shy about pets. I still have my cat and love her to death but I have contemplated not getting another dog or cat when it's time to make that difficult decision again. We have pigs and chickens and although I do care for them as though they are pets, and although there is a sadness when their time comes, it's different than with housepets.
I believe I will always have a housepet, a dog or cat. But for now I will focus on enjoying the years I have left with my cat Jazz, she's plenty."

Christine Kenney (Bellepic, #8680) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a Beginner Farmgirl Gratitude Badge!
"I posted my daily entries in a blog post:
https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2025/01/gratitude-practice.html
Is it OK I read one daily essay out of Ross Gay's Book of Delights? I had already read The Book of Awesome in November and wasn't ready to move on to his sequel.
Has anyone else found these sorts of challenges make it easier to see the silver linings in setbacks? Feeling more open to suggestions from the universe, kismet, and the feeling that everything is happening for a reason?
At least for now, I approach life a bit more playfully. For instance, hiding a sheet of star stickers in the "Found Things" chapter of my reference title before returning it to the library."

PS: The answer to Christine's question is yes! That sounds like a great substitute.

Rea Nakanishi (Lacey, #8284) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning an Intermediate Candlemaking Badge!
"This was a fun project.
Gathered the materials need and the scented fragrance oils to mix in. Started by melting the wax and added the fragrance. Then poured in to a diamond shape mold and a decorative jar. I used it as part of a gift basket.
Fun project! I have made several candle with different fragrances to use through out the year."

"A couple of our farmgirls got together and made candles. I liked the hand dipped tapered candles I have done this type of candle making at a living history program. The type of candle I like the best is bees wax. I like the way it melts and can be reused.
I have continued to make candles for the holidays. I like the pine and cinnamon fragrances."

Debbie Fischer (BlessedinColorado, #1582) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning a Beginner UFOs Badge!
"All my unfinished projects that I set aside, I always did put them in bags with everything I would need one day to finish them. Sometimes I picked them up and would finish them and others I did not, more due to my eye sight than anything. So I gave them away to friends.
Except my little needlepoint project, as I wanted to prove to myself I could understand and finish it with just a bit of work.
I did post this too in Merit Badge Chit Chat.
I did not post this as a UFO before, but it surely is. I just recently finished it after over 5 years. I struggled with needlepoint as I had never done it before. I can embroider and cross stitch but needlepoint eluded me! I was so frustrated, I went to a friend at the Library where I worked and asked for her help. I still did not get it and she was flabbergasted and could not understand why I was not getting it and she gave up, rightly so. Finally I sat down late last year and just really followed the pattern and guess what - it clicked. Here is the finished piece waiting to be framed.
I am proud that I finally finished it."

"I built a blog!
https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2025/02/book-notes-blogging-for-creatives.html
My objective with this blog is to hedge my own forgetfulness. I want to better remember the adventures and lessons learned working on other sisterhood badges... and maybe connect with a few kindred spirits, if you're out there blogging too. Writing for myself takes the pressure off perfection and growing page views."

"The https://steamstead.blogspot.com/ is picking up some steam!
If anyone else is blogging or looking to start, I resurrected Stacy's blogging thread in Merit Badge Chit Chat. Let's connect!
I picked "Steamstead" as a name for this blog because we are perpetually renovating our old Victorian house. My husband and I have a DIY, sustainability, punk/steampunk approach to life. My daughter and I love STEAM (science-tech-art-math) subjects the most in our homeschool."

Heather Neeper (nndairy, #4701) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a Beginner Herbs Badge!
"I'm very interested in learning more about medicinal uses for herbs. Not just ones that I grow but also ones I can find already growing on my property.
The first herb I found very useful is plantain. It grows everywhere around here - in the yard, the pasture, the hay field, etc. Both the broad leaf and narrow leaf, but the broad leaf is more prevalent. It's great for skin healing, but the best use is for those pesky, itchy mosquito bites! You can make infused oils and salves with it, but when you're out gathering berries and the mosquitoes are really biting you can just grab a leaf, chew it up a little bit and put it right on the bite. The itching stops so you can focus on picking berries again.
The second herb is peppermint. It's useful for treating headaches and nausea, it can help improve energy, and I read it can help unclog stuffy sinuses.
The third herb I fell in love with is alfalfa. I'm not sure why I never thought about making alfalfa tea for myself since I know how good it is for the cows, but it took reading about it in a book to click in my brain! Alfalfa is full of antioxidants and minerals. It's useful for recovering from illness. Studies also show it can help lower cholesterol, act as a natural diuretic, help detox the liver, and maintain bone health. It tastes surprisingly good as hot or cold tea.
The 4th herb is lemon balm. It is great for decreasing anxiety and improving your mood. It can also help with indigestion. I also read it has antiviral properties making it useful for fighting cold sores, and it's anti-inflammatory properties help with menstrual cramps and arthritis.
The 5th herb is marshmallow. The root is very beneficial for respiratory health. It can reduce inflammation in the respiratory tract, loosen mucus, and relieve coughing - great for treating bronchitis and asthma. It also helps sooth and protect the digestive system lining which is useful for treating ulcers and heartburn. Marshmallow root is also useful in treating skin conditions such as wounds and burns.
It's exciting to discover what I can grow and also find right outside my back door to use for a variety of problems!"

Heather Neeper (nndairy, #4701) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning an Intermediate Herbs Badge!
"I have an herb garden with chives, oregano, basil, and parsley outside my door. In the garden I have sage and lemon balm. In front of the house I have some peppermint and spearmint. Since I've been growing these herbs for a few years I wanted to learn more medicinal herbs so I researched more flowers and plants that I discovered growing in the fields, pasture, woods, and my yard.
One very beneficial herb I found was wild violets. The woods are full of them if you look at the right time! Wild violets are fantastic at moving lymph which is very useful in treating mastitis. It's reported to work very well in humans but I have no experience with that. However, I can say it's amazing how much it helps reduce swelling in a cow with mastitis!
Red clover is another beneficial herb for general detoxing however it has estrogen like effects. Use caution if estrogen is not needed but it can be useful for menopausal symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats, etc.)
It is wonderful to grow herbs that taste great and to be able to use natural remedies growing wild!"

Heather Neeper (nndairy, #4701) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning an Expert Herbs Badge!
"I added sage, lavender, marshmallow, calendula, and rosemary to the herb garden this year. I also discovered wild rose, chickweed, apple blossoms, and dead nettle growing naturally.
The marshmallow isn't supposed to be harvested until the second year so I won't know how it turned out until this summer. The calendula and lavender make great infused oil turned into salves that I gave to family for Christmas gifts. I always get poison ivy from not paying attention to what I'm getting into while harvesting wild berries so I was happy to learn apple blossoms brewed into tea applied to poison ivy rash help dry it up and stop the itching. Wouldn't you know - now that I was stocked up on a natural remedy I didn't get any poison ivy this year!
I also made some herbal infused oil for bread dipping and added little packets of dried herbs to put in the oil right before serving. That was a big hit. I even have requests for more already. I enjoyed learning about herbs so much I bought the herbal apothecary seed collection from Annie's Heirloom seeds. There are 35 different herbs in there. I'm so excited to grow them this summer and continue learning about the many uses for herbs."
