Christine Kenney (bellepic, #8680) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning an Intermediate Going Green Badge!

"These are so simple, I don't think they quite qualify as recipes for soap, laundry detergent, and general cleaner.

https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2025/04/going-green-intermediate.html

As extra credit, I took a crack at scrubbing the ring of waxy grey build up around the drainage holes in the drum of my top loading washing machine with washing soda, a tooth brush, and a chainmail cast iron scrubber.

I also put together a gift bucket for the new owners of my grandmother in-law's home. Hopefully that counts toward both levels of the badge.

https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2025/03/green-up-gift-basket.html

I am a convert to vinegar for general cleaning.

Making my own laundry detergent is more complexity than I am ready to sign up for when I have stocked up on a non-toxic commercial option, but it is good to know that I could still run a load in an apocalypse situation!

The gift bucket of cleaners was such a hit with my MIL who delivered it that she hinted I should assemble a few more!"

Rea Nakanishi (Lacey, #8284) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an Intermediate Community Service Badge!

"I have been volunteering at the local Grange Hall.
The hall was in need of some “cleaning up”.

So I stated to work in the kitchen cleaning closets, replacing drawer pulls and cabinet knobs and refreshing the paint.

The next project in the kitchen was to replace the cross bars on the overhead sky light.

Then off I went to the local supply store to find and replace the plastic light panels. All the work in the kitchen area was done over several months.

I enjoy do helping where I can."

Rea Nakanishi (Lacey, #8284) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an Expert Community Service Badge!

"Continued to work at our local Grange Hall. This Grange has been in the area for one hundred and fifty years and the current building was built in the 50's.

To continue my volunteer work I have focused on the outside of the building.

I started by trimming the dead branches of the 12 trees to get them back into an orderly shape. Put down new weed cloth and helped spread out new black bark around the building. Cleaned the front planters of the overgrown Canna flowers to get them back to a manageable area. Weeded then installed new grass in the front parking lot area. Then I usually go there 1 to 2 times a week to pick up debris that is left from parties that use the hall.

I think all the improvements have made the hall much more serviceable and appealing to the town. The Grange Hall is used every day of the week for community service groups, weddings, churches and many small organizations.

I will continue helping out the Grange Hall."

Rea Nakanishi (Lacey, #8284) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning an Expert Built It Green Badge!

"Volunteered with a friend at the Habitat for Humanity site in October. The job was to sweep the entire parking lot, pick up construction paper, nails, empty boxes and tape. We were onsite working from 9am to 2pm.

In February volunteered 5 hours at their reuse it store. The job was to dust and clean furniture as it arrived, wash out refrigerators and help move furniture around the warehouse. One of the last tasks in the warehouse was to stain a coffee table for resale. This is a wonderful place to donate good usable items.

I felt it was a very worthy cause and I would volunteer again.

I enjoyed doing this and will do it again."

Nancy Joplin (Nancy Joplin, #8352) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning an Intermediate Cross-Stitch Badge!

"To earn this badge, I learned about different fabrics to use for cross-stitching. I found out how many stitched per inch I wanted my project to contain. I completed a more advanced project.

I learned that there were many different fabrics I could use for cross-stitching. Aida, linen, and even weaves such as fiddler's cloth, hardanger, jobelan, lugana, and even waste canvas. The fabrics come in many different stitch-per-inch counts - 6,8,11,14,16,18, and 20 stitches per inch counts.

I also completed a more advanced project which was an eagle with an American flag and a banner that reads "God Bless America"."

Nancy Joplin (Nancy Joplin, #8352) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning an Expert Cross-Stitch Badge!

"I designed my own template to cross-stitch for a large project.

I made a template from a picture. I made the template to use 14-count Aida cloth. The template included a poem and different borders of birds, fields, ducks, and fish. I made it for my husband, and he really enjoys it now that it is finally completed!"

Nancy Joplin (Nancy Joplin, #8352) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning an Expert Relaxation Badge!

"I continued with my pottery classes. I also continued with my relaxation every day. I kept a diary of my exercises and how I benefited from them.

I continued with my pottery classes because I really enjoyed them. I continued with my relaxation exercises, walking and deep breathing. I kept a journal of my exercises and how they benefited me. I found out that while I benefited from both exercises, the deep breathing was able to be done throughout the day. Walking meant stopping what I was doing and going out around the neighborhood. I enjoyed the walking, but it was easier to continue during the day without breaking up the day too much."

"Got involved!

We have a CASA program in town that helps foster kids while in court. A thrift store and Christian school in town is helping take care of foster families and spreading the word about needing more foster parents.

I donate my time weekly volunteering in the thrift store and I made meals for the foster families. Also volunteered to help families get a weekend break and have the kids stay at our house.

It is very rewarding knowing you are helping families in need."

Michelle Springer (#8689) has received a certificates of achievement in Outpost for earning the Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert Speak for the Trees Badges!

"With a Tree identification book in hand, I noted the native trees on my property and a nearby park. There are many types of trees, and here are a few I learned about: Holly, Black Walnut, Black Gum, Hickory, Oaks, Maples, and Spruce trees.

I am currently planting trees on my property, so I researched windbreaks for certain areas and walked around cleaning up debris.

It turned out great! I learned so much and fun too!"

"I attended school board meetings. When election time came around, I learned what the issues were while paying special attention to the ballot initiatives. I shared what I had learned in a non-partisan way. I voted in five elections for city, state, and federal matters.

My husband and I are retired teachers. We attended many school board meetings so that we would know what our district's issues and needs were.

I studied the issues and ballot initiatives in the last election and realized that the way that we do business in this country is the way that things have been done for over 250 years. And...they still work!

I voted in five elections. . . I vote every time an election comes up because that is how we have a say in the future of America."

Nancy Joplin (Nancy Joplin, #8352) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an Expert Languages/Cultures Badge!

"I researched the holidays and traditions of my Hungarian culture. I planned a family celebration of Hungarian Easter traditions. We sang a song as a family that I learned from my Grandmother when I was young.

I found out that all my life I have unknowingly celebrated Holidays in a decidedly Hungarian way. We had lentil soup and pork chops on New Year's Day because doing so was supposed to bring good luck. We also went to church on Good Friday, participated in the Stations of the Cross, and did not eat meat that day. We celebrated Easter with ham, potato salad, and hard boiled eggs. On All Saints' Day (Nov. 1) we went to the cemetery and put flowers on the graves of our relatives. For Christmas, we had a crib set up under our tree, we went caroling in our neighborhood, opened gifts on Christmas Eve, went to church Christmas morning, and even had stuffed cabbage on the day after Christmas. I never realized how many of our celebrations were cultural."

Christine Kenney (bellepic, #8680) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a Beginner Reading, 'Riting, and 'Rythmatic Badge!

"I read a pulpy best-seller, a marine biology reference, and a collection of medieval Persian poetry.

I journaled about them here: https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2025/04/reading-writing-rithmatic.html

All three of these were an enriching use of time. Poetry appreciation is my biggest struggle. However, I am finding the poetry primer I bought for my kid, A Child's Introduction to Poetry (Michael Driscoll) is just accessible enough for a 40 year old kid like me to follow."

Heather Neeper (nndairy, #4701) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an Expert Lost Art of Letter Writing Badge!

"I have had various pen pals throughout the years, starting when I was in 7th grade. My family moved from Ohio to Michigan and I kept in touch with some friends for a while. I've also had various sisterhood pen pals since joining 14 years ago. We have exchanged more than the 5 required letters. I made a post on the forum about how it makes me feel to get a letter in the mail.

It has been wonderful keeping in touch with friends and making new ones through letters. I would love to find more pen pals from other countries."

Heather Neeper (nndairy, #4701) has received a certificate of achievement in Outpost for earning a Beginner First Aid Badge!

"I assembled some basic first aid kits by putting some wipes, various band-aids, gauze, tape, and ointment in plastic rubbermaid food storage containers. I have a better first aid kit in the bathroom. I thought that I already applied for this badge since I made the kits sometime last year. Since I didn't, I took this opportunity to go through and restock them.

My husband thought I was getting a bit carried away, but I noticed that when we were in the field or the woods working and something happened, like a cut finger, it would be ignored unless it was bad enough to require a trip all the way back to the house - which is pretty much never. So, my little first aid kits went in the tool boxes of all the tractors, the 4 wheelers, and the glove boxes of all the farm trucks. There's also one in the shop and milking parlor. Now those pesky "not serious" cuts get attention when they happen! It's wonderful to have everything handy."

Heather Neeper (nndairy, #4701) has received a certificate of achievement in Outpost for earning a Beginner Rocks and Minerals Badge!

"I researched minerals and rocks. I discovered that minerals are individual substances and rocks are a mixture of minerals (along with some other things).

The key characteristics of minerals are:
- They are naturally occurring, not man made.
- They're inorganic, not made from living organisms or their remains.
- They're solid at room temperature.
- They have a defined chemical composition (a specific chemical formula)
- They have a crystalline structure - the atoms are arranged in regular repeating pattern forming crystals.

The three types of rocks are:
1. Igneous - formed by cooling and solidification of molten rock.
2. Sedimentary - formed by accumulation and cementation of sediments (pieces of other rocks, mineral, and organic matter)
3. Metmorphic - formed when existing rocks are changed by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions.

It was fun to learn that besides the minerals needed for our health, rocks and minerals are used a lot in everyday life. From roads and building materials to cosmetics, jewelry, and electronics!"

Heather Neeper (nndairy, #4701) has received a certificate of achievement in Outpost for earning a Beginner Speak for the Trees Badge!

"I dug out my old college tree identification book and found a great online "Trees of Ohio Field Guide" to use in identifying the trees in my yard. I found out we have shagbark hickory, walnut, buckeye, red maple, and bur oak. They're all native to Ohio.

While I needed the guides to identify the specific types it was nice to discover I had retained some knowledge from my Botany class over 20 years ago! I remembered the general shape of the oak leaves and maple leaves, but I didn't know if they were silver maple or red maple, bur oak or black oak without the guide books.

I took this picture for the stormy clouds but I thought it was fun for the trees too."

Heather Neeper (nndairy, #4701) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning a Beginner Mindfulness Meditation Badge!

"I researched meditation and found that most of the benefits come from reduced stress. By reducing cortisol levels the nervous system is calmed and the mind is quieter. This in turn leads to lower blood pressure and better heart health, an improvement in the time it takes to fall asleep and better sleep quality, and a decreases in anxiety and increase in focus. There are a number of types of meditation but there seems to be 3 major types.
1 - focused attention - where you concentrate on a single object (such as breath, mantra, or an image) to improve focus and concentration.
2 - open monitoring - where you observe the flow of thoughts and sensations without getting caught up in them. This promotes acceptance and present moment awareness.
3 - Automatic self-transcending where you gently repeat a mantra to relax the mind and promote peace.

For a week I tried to find a meditation that worked for me. I found it incredibly difficult! I have a hard time not doing something so when I'm sitting quietly I find myself thinking of things that need to be done or that I should be doing instead. I tried some guided meditations on YouTube and they were peaceful enough I ended up falling asleep! I was lucky enough that I discovered a way to use meditation to quiet my brain for sleep. I found by repeating the word deep with each inhalation and the word sleep with each exhalation I'm focusing only on my breathing and those 2 words so my brain shuts down and I fall asleep much faster. I'm looking forward to trying some other guided meditations and see what else I can come up with that works for me. "

Heather Neeper (nndairy, #4701) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a Beginner Rootin' Tootin Badge!

"5 root vegetables that can grow in my area are beets, carrots, radishes, potatoes, and onions. All of these plus a few more, like turnips, are found in the grocery store. I'm not sure where they're all grown as the labels just say "grown in the USA" on some of them. As I suspected, this time of the year most of them are from California and Florida. I know that as the weather warms up there will be more local produce available.

I was actually surprised that a lot of the root vegetables were grown in the USA. I expected to find things from Mexico or Brazil."

Christine Kenney (bellepic, #8680) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning a Beginner Know Your Food Badge!

"I re-read (audiobook) Animal, Vegetable, Miracle- https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2025/03/animal-vegetable-miracle.html

I kept a food journal for the month of April and posted my findings here- https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2025/05/know-your-food-1-month-food-journal.html

I've been keeping a mason jar with a drainage grate lid on the edge of my sink and regularly harvesting my sprouts (6 oz/8 oz bag of seeds used so far).

Here are 10 ways to incorporate more fruits and veggies into you and your family's diet: https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2025/05/10-new-ways-to-eat-more-fruit-and.html

I scoured my pantry for hydrogenated oils and the only thing I could find was shortening my husband came home with when I asked him to get more Crisco to fry homemade tortilla chips in. I will be happy to let that go. (I verified the liquid Crisco we ultimately used is not hydrogenated.)

In hunting for artificial sweeteners, I found stevia in my protein powder. I'm not comfortable throwing out $90 of supplement that is helping me maintain muscle mass for the Get Physical expert challenge because of one ingredient. But even I agree that the mix tastes too sweet. This brand does have an unflavored option which I will opt for on the next order. Hopefully that still qualifies as completing this level of the badge because otherwise, it will take months to work through this much protein powder in order to apply again!"

Debbie Klann (debbieklann, #770) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning an Intermediate Path to Zero Waste Badge!

"I kept track of all waste/garbage in our house for a week. I had an idea of what I thought would be the biggest contributor, but I was surprised by what I found!

The top contributors of trash that particular week were single use food containers, such as yogurt cups; plastic wrap, ziploc bags and paper napkins; and food scraps.

I was really surprised by the food that I ended up having to toss. I really make an effort to use leftovers but I always seem to find produce that doesn't get used.

I also found food was getting stale in my cupboards and needed to find a way to keep them fresh after opening so they didn't end up going to waste."
