Candy Hogan (Tigger9777, #8283) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning an Expert Dyeing for Color badge!
"I tried fabric stamping as my new technique.
I made my color wheel and fir my last project. I tie dyed an apron using the swirl pattern and then used stencils and fabric markers to decorate my apron.
It was fun."

Tina VanDaam (TinaTina, #8437) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a Beginner Birds badge!
"I earned this badge buy researching birds in the Pacific Northwest area as I just moved. I also made up a list of birds that I would like to see in this area
It turned out pleasingly well I was able to look up the birds in the area and make a list of birds I'd like to see. There are a lot of birds near my home coming to the feeder that are very colorful"

Karen Martell (Joka Martell, #8422) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning a Beginner Aprons badge!
"I’ve been wearing aprons in the kitchen for years. I’m a super messy kitchen worker! lol.
I sewed a 1/2 apron to use to hold clothes pins when hanging laundry outside. I decided to add decorative trim to the pockets and sides/bottom of apron so it took about a half of a day.
The apron turned out super cute and it’s so useful! Plus I love wearing aprons while in the kitchen to save my clothes from the mess."

Hilary Weston (Hgweston, #8702) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a Beginner Little Squirts badge!
"I oiled all the doors and hinges today. We don’t really have an off season so I made sure all the garden tools were clean and in good repair. Youngest is the only one who currently has a bike. His chain didn‘t need oiling, but I did make sure his tires were properly inflated and his helmet was clean and in good repair.
Strangely satisfying to take care of the little things I haven’t thought of."

Hilary Weston (Hgweston, #8702) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning a Beginner Get It Together badge!
"I declutterred and organized my kitchen and pantry. It was sooooo much work. I hope it’s easier to use.
Far more organized, but not *looking* much better. There’s only so much one can do with such a tiny space for so many people."

Hilary Weston (Hgweston, #8702) has received certificates of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning the Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert Going Green badges!
"My home is green and I make most of our products; I have made my own laundry detergent before but I feel the green commercial product does a better job for cheaper in this instance.
The mission statement is: A healthy home for a healthy life.
I made a gift basket of all natural homemade goodies for my eldest child‘s boyfriend who moved in to his first apartment. I spent at least 6 hours helping them make it green and cozy. I also lent him my green living folder and told him about the lending library I set up. I also told the girls in my book club about the lending library.
It turned out excellent! I am excited that we are passing our values on to another family and that my child has caught my values! So proud of!"

Hilary Weston (Hgweston, #8702) has received certificates of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning the Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert Recycling badges!
"We don’t have curbside recycling but our small town does have our own recycling center that accepts aluminum and plastic. We hardly ever use plastic, but recycling cans is something we‘ve been doing! I also talked my MIL into recycling- and she has had curbside recycling!
Great! The recycling center is right next to an awesome antique shop and it gives me a good excuse to browse. Haha #128540;"

"#127812;#8205;#129003; Mushroom cultivation! Best sanitary practices include 1.cleanliness of growing area 2. personal hygiene 3. sterilization of tools and equipment 4. substrate sterilization 5. monitoring and inspection and post crop sanitation. Other steps I will take to ensure safety and buying start from a reputable source and cooking thoroughly just to be on the safe side.
I was pleased with both batches and ate them and fed them to my family, despite initially being a little nervous about it. Actually delicious and really fun! I am going to continue indoors for the summer and hope to try inoculation of a log in the future."

"I read the manual and I wrote a short story about 4000 words - about a woman whose dead daughter visits her as her angel to take her to heaven.
My family loved it and there were a few typos which i fixed. I had to change the title. But I think it's good."

Christine Kenney (bellepic, #8680) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning a Beginner Cheesemaking badge!
"I made yogurt for the first time in my Instantpot. Now I am figuring out what to do with all this whey.
Blog report is posted here: https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2025/07/experimental-yogurt.html
I was surprised that this first batch wasn't particularly economical and created more recycled packaging than buying the regenerative organic store brand, but it was still a fun and educational adventure."

Christine Kenney (bellepic, #8680) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning an Intermediate Shopping Green badge!
"We filled our six reusable shopping bags with minimally packaged/recyclable products. I reviewed my research on green cleaners and have not added any new toxic products to the rotation.
Gimme "Big Sheets" seaweed snacks lifted a lot of my trash guilt. We had been going through dozens of these snacks which were individually wrapped in a plastic tray with a silicon moisture absorber. So much trash! The Big Sheets come in a single mylar envelope which isn't perfect but is a substantial trash reduction for a lunchbox staple.
My daughter tried taking it a step further by harvesting and drying her own kelp from a boat trip with her dad. Uncharacteristically for 6 year olds, she and her friends politely gnawed through a couple hunks of local seaweed with their eyes tearing up from the excess salt but I noticed no one asked for seconds. I discretely moved the remainder into the compost bin. That project was a little too advanced for us!"

Christine Kenney (bellepic, #8680) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning an Expert Let's Get Physical badge!
"I swam/bike/ran 70.3 miles in 6 hours and 37 minutes!
Details about the race itself blogged here: https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2025/07/703-oregon-25.html
This Let's Get Physical badge series represents 248 hours of following a strength and cardio workout plan since I started working on it last November.
The hardest part now is figuring out what fun feats of strength to focus on next."

Candy Hogan (Tigger9777, #8283) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an Expert Plant It Forward badge!
"This year I planted a double garden to be able to donate my harvests weekly. So far I have been donating: corn, cucumbers, tomatoes and Basil. I have planted the corn in 3 different stages so I can harvest all summer. I have 23 pumpkins planted so I will continue to make donation runs through October.
I organized a Gleaning party with our chapter group. People came on different days and I was able to pick extra and deliver to those who could not make it.
I volunteered at our local food bank before they moved to their new location in June 2025. Our local food bank would not accept uncertified grower product so I have been making donations to our local senior center.
It has a good learning process."

Rea Nakanishi (Lacey, #8284) has received a certificate of achievement in Outpost for earning a Beginner Outstepping badge!
"I enjoy going out into nature in my area.
I hiked Cold Canyon Creek, Creek regional park and Stebbins wildlife area.
In the arboretum near campus you will find the state tree-the CA Redwood, CA, baby quails, and along the road side CA poppies.
In my area there is no open campfires allowed due to the dry conditions, but it is always good to know how to make a safe campfire keep it small and have water and tools nearby for emergencies.
Hiking and exploring new places is always fun."

Rea Nakanishi (Lacey, #8284) has received a certificate of achievement in Outpost for earning an Intermediate Orienteering badge!
"For the orienteering badge I planned an event with Kj and Cj. WE started at a local park that also has open space and wetlands. I made a simple course for instruction and practice. Then made a more interesting course into the open space and edge of the wetlands then back into the park area. It was a long day but we had fun.
Learned along about accurate instructions."

I enjoyed Stephan King's book. He included a memoir in the front of the book. It was hilarious. The other book was just a treasure trove of ideas. I also took her online course."

Tina VanDaam (TinaTina, #8437) has received a certificate of achievement in Outpost for earning a Beginner Speak for the Trees badge!
"I earned this badge by going out and looking at the trees as well as picking up a couple books from the library.
It turn out to be harder than I thought because the books and the internet had conflicting information. I eventually figured it out and was confident that I identified the trees correctly."

Tina VanDaam (TinaTina, #8437) has received a certificate of achievement in Outpost for earning a Beginner Pampered Pets badge!
"I earned this badge by looking for a vet that was into Natural and Holistic medicine. I also looked into the ingredients of his dog food his Purina Pro Plan does have Corn, wheat, soy and animal products in it. He does have joint problems, but it's due to age 16 1/2 and he is a larger dog.
This badge turned out good as my dog is definitely a pampered pouch. Sometimes I give him a rice and vegetable diet. When we took him to the vet they said the joint issues are age related. I also try to give him a muscle massage to help my dog."

Shennandoah Connor (Shennandoah, #8578) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a Beginner Community Service badge!
"I considered three organizations for volunteering: The Impact Project/Artable Curiosities, Habitat for Humanity, and The Texas Honeybee Education Association. I chose Impact/Artable for many reasons. As a creative reuse center, it aligns with my values of creative expression and stewardship/sustainability. The proceeds for the store provide teachers with free school supplies. They also have a creative studio where they teach art/craft classes, host meet-ups and events, etc - including providing activities and opportunities for special needs children and adults.
Here is specifically what I did: -2 hours organizing donations in the teacher's store -2 hours hosting the knit and stitch meet up, where I also taught the Director's granddaughter how to crochet -3 hours crocheting finished edges for some unfinished projects that were donated, so the store can use them elsewhere -4 hours training with the National Association of Mental Illness, as the store/studio often get patrons with mental health issues. The training was to help us identify and better respond to the needs of these patrons.
Total of 11 hours
I really enjoyed it. The director lets me bring my autistic son when he is out of school and the volunteers are all ex-teachers, so they are very welcoming and understanding of his needs. I've been a loyal customer of the creative reuse store and finally spoke to the director about volunteering once I decided to quit my job. It's been a great choice and I will continue to volunteer for them for the foreseeable future."

Shennandoah Connor (Shennandoah, #8578) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning an Expert The Secret Life of Bees badge!
"For the past 15 months I have been raising bees. I lost one colony last fall due to pesticide exposure. The other hive I was able to nurture and build up so that it made it through winter and came into spring nice and strong. This May I added two more nucs, for a total of three hives. I am happy to report that all three are doing fantastic! My original hive did replace its Queen, so I will be re-queening with a gentler breed in the fall (since Texas has lots of Africanized aka "Spice" bees).
I partnered up with a local bee supplier and have been teaching gardening classes for his weekly beekeeper meet ups, as well as consulting on his property landscaping and helping out with group visits. I've learned how to manage mites, beetles, and other pests and diseases, as well as how to perform splits, how to combine hives, how to catch swarms, queen management and more.
I also went through the Texas Master Beekeeper Apprentice Level 10 week course through the extension service. I need to study and will likely take my test at the Texas Beekeepers Association Conference in November.
Two weeks ago I went to the bee store and helped Charlie and the gang harvest honey. It was a very sticky activity but we learned multiple ways to harvest honey depending on what size of operation you have.
It's going great! I feel like I have found my tribe with the beekeepers that congregate at Charlie Bee Company (the bee guy I work with). I love that I get to share my gardening and homesteading knowledge while learning a new hobby. It's been really interesting going deep into honeybees and beekeeping. It's the perfect blend of art and science, academic and practical, and the people it attracts are just so curious, friendly, and energetic. So glad I got over my fear and decided to take on this hobby. It's made a huge positive impact on my life!"
