Candy Hogan (Tigger9777, #8283) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning an Expert Sew Wonderful badge!

"I finally got around to sewing my BakeOver TakeOver.

I used my signature blue check gingham fabric and heat resistant batting. Got a bit confused on the directions in the Idea Book so modified the pattern to work for a 9x12 casserole dish.

My pot holders were made in 2023, using cotton fabric for a Fall theme. I embroidered around the different leaves before finishing the potholders. A long time in between the 2 projects, but so happy to get them done.

Turned out great."

"I advertised to out Brentwood Farmgirl Chapter that they can participate in gleaning my double garden this year. I had 6 people participate.

I charted when they came over and what they were able to glean. Adam even took the old corn stalks for his sheep to eat. I don't need any sponsors to keep the garden going.

I am currently looking into planting the winter crops for my zone area.

It was good."

"I know how to change the oil in my vehicles. I took 2 years of automotive in school. Having all your supplies on hand is key. I use: gloves, paper towels, oil wrench, new oil, oil drip pan and a funnel.
I took my waste oil to our closest hazardous waste recycling plant.

It was easy."

"I answered all the questions and wrote the questions and answers down. I read about each question and learned a couple things about my States Senators and Representatives and who they are.

I learned about who makes laws, parts of Congress, the three branches of government and what each branch does."

Debbie Klann (debbieklann, #770) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a Beginner Birds badge!

"Some of the native birds to central Oregon are:
magpie
killdeer
robin
heron
swallow
hawk
kinglet
dove
owl
osprey
sparrow
starling
black capped chickadee
woodpecker
bluebird
flicker
dipper (they walk underwater!)
meadowlark

I don't remember ever seeing a western meadowlark, which is our state bird, in the wild. I would like to see one, although I think there are not as many on this side of the mountains.

I have a fascination with magpies! We have had 2 "couples" come back year after year and they spend a lot of time out my kitchen window in the winter time. They are extremely smart birds!"

Debbie Klann (debbieklann, #770) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning a Beginner Macrame badge!

"Unless you count my one attempt with macrame, WAY back in the day, making a set of too short horse reins, I am a beginner in the macrame world.

I did some research on different materials and watched several videos and tutorials on knot making. I learned that there are so many different kinds of rope or cord that can be used for projects; depending on the scale of the project, anything from silk cord to jute rope.

I found a perfect beginner project and made a simple bracelet. I enjoyed working with the silk cord."

"I have a flower bed that I have planted a couple different times with flowers and plants that attract bees and butterflies.

I made a bird/bee/butterfly water station out of a clay pot, dish and filled it with colored pebbles and put it in the bed.

This past summer, I mostly saw late afternoon visits by the local birds: getting drinks, cooling themselves off, as it's on the sunny side of the house.

We always have robins, sparrows and starlings come to visit."

"I have not been a real "bird watcher" but this past summer I have made an effort to change that and really observe our local birds and their comings and goings.

I have been amazed at the amount of hawks in the area! We have 2 hawk nests near our house and I was able to watch them raise their little one and then watch them all out in the hayfield looking for mice. Their eyesight is unbelievable! The young one doesn't seem to be too afraid of people. I got a picture of him right outside our living room one evening. He also liked to sit on the hay stacks and watch for mice, not even moving when the tractor was trying to get the hay moved!

I also enjoy the killdeer. There seemed to be a lot of them this year. I like to try and find their nests, right on the ground. They're such excitable little things. One year there was a killdeer nest right at the edge of a grass field and I noticed my husband had gone right around it with his tractor tire marks, not wanting to disturb it.

We also have a heron that travels between the ponds. He is so majestic! I enjoyed watching him while we were down fishing this summer."

"So much to know about fishing rules and regulations!!! I had no idea! When I've gone fishing in the past, I have relied on my partner's knowledge of the particular river or lake that we are fishing on.

The state of Oregon has a variety of both fresh water and ocean fishing so the state fishing regulations book is a must have to know what you need to know... what kind of bait, how many fish per body of water, what kind of fish, which fish need special tags.

Five of the main types of fish in our central Oregon area and what they feed on are:
Large mouth bass: flies, bugs, grasshoppers, nightcrawlers, spinners and frogs
Crappie: live minnows
Bluegill: worms, nightcrawlers, insects, canned tuna and bread
Trout: troutflies, worms, minnows and crawfish
Kokanee: flashers, spinners and corn"

"I have been working on this badge for a little bit. I took a couple of painting classes at the local art studio downtown to make the 2 paintings. They were done with acrylic paint.

I have been taking watercolor classes via online tutorials and also took a couple of classes through our local community college.

I really love watercolor! There's so many surprises when you work with it. I plan on doing a lot more of it this winter!"

"For this badge, I researched and learned several more knots. I made an example of commonly used knots: a row of lark’s head knots to attach my cords to the stick; 2 rows of half hitches; right and left half square knots; a couple of square knots in the center; diagonal half hitches; repeating half square knots to create twists and finally a gathering knot at the bottom.

I also made 4 hanging plant holders. One helpful thing I learned was that it was easier for me to tie adjacent cords if the project was hanging instead of laying flat. I did a little unknotting but got it figured out. I thought it was relaxing!"

"Being married to an avid outdoorsman, I have been on many fishing trips. We have fished for halibut in Alaska (so delicious!), steelhead in Southern Oregon, trout on the Deschutes and various lakes.

As I hadn't been fishing for awhile, my grandson helped me brush off my fishing skills this summer and we spent several evenings fishing in the ponds on our farm. As it's catch and release here, we didn't cook any that were caught but we did have a great time hanging out together....isn't that one of the great things about fishing? "

Candy Hogan (Tigger9777, #8283) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning an Expert I Should Have Been in the Movies badge!

"Today 9/19/2025, I made a YouTube video for the expert level badge:
"I Should Have Been in the Movies".

The video goes live at midnight (12:01am) on 9/20/2025.

MJF no longer has the tv website, so they said to make a YouTube video, share the link and share on chit chat.

My video is on seed harvesting in the badge section Garden Gate, badge "Heirlooms Forever".
You can find my video on YouTube, https://youtu.be/x3-hw7z3FVw

My husband stopped the video twice. Once for filming on vertical instead of horizontal and stopping once because a vehicle drove through tapeing.
The 3rd time we got the video.

Write up here: https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2025/09/her-story-claudia-sheinbaum-pardo.html

My main sources were her 40 minute Youtube documentary and Wikipedia page. I took a crack at translating a biography a few months ago, but my translation skills weren't up to the task before the library wanted it back. Hope that's OK!"

Christine Kenney (bellepic, #8680) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a Beginner Languages/Cultures badge!

"I am working on learning more about Spanish and South American cultures.

https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2025/09/languagesculture.html

I have been working on Spanish with Duolingo for years and if you count my brief exposure to it in 1st grade, the count climbs to decades. Little did I know back then that I would move cross country to a neighborhood that favors Spanish for neighborly sidewalk conversation. Forgive me if for simplicity I say that I started this badge today.

This morning, I came across a chapter in Braiding Sweetgrass about preserving indigenous languages. This is not only a way to both connect with others, but also a way to bend your world view. Kimmerer mentions that her native tongue uses way more verbs than nouns and first divides things into "living" and "not living" rather than drawing as large of a distinction between "human" and "other." Her native language has myriad words for "thank you," but none for "please," because it was implicit that if someone asked respectfully, it would be given. Likewise, I am fascinated that where English-speakers pair a lot of concepts with "I am," Spanish draws a finer distinction based on how permanent the status seems to be to them. "Soy Christine," "Soy estadounidense," "no soy rica," Your name, your nationality, and your socioeconomic status might as well be tattooed on you with a verb like soy. "Estoy cansada," "estoy confundida," being tired or confused are transient. "Tengo hambre," "tengo miedo," hunger and fear are things that you literally "have" like an unwanted possession.

On the reverse side, I have a friend that uses unusual pronouns. I asked our mutual Spanish-speaking friend how people handle that scenario in Spanish because pretty much every noun has a gender and you've got to get the adjectives to agree with them. She shrugged and said they don't have such a thing in Spanish as far as she's aware. Later, I watched a documentary about their current president who is a women's rights advocate and noticed that very often, instead of using the male plural for a noun that encompasses a group of mixed genders, the president(a) would often explicitly say both the male plural and the female plural versions. Fascinating!"

Debbie Klann (#770, debbieklann) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning an Intermediate Living Zero Waste badge!

"I wanted to continue to reduce the amount of saran wrap, napkins and ziploc bags that we were using. I made beeswax food wraps and also fabric bowl covers to use instead. I like the idea that the beeswax covers are naturally antibacterial/antifungal and breathable. I continued to use the fabric napkins that I made for the beginner badge.

We continued to do this for the past couple of months. I so prefer using cloth napkins over paper! I also made a concentrated effort to eliminate food waste. Leftovers are made a priority and half would be put in the freezer for later on. They have really come in handy on busy days!
I have also been downsizing and sharing what I no longer need at local thrift stores. We have always enjoyed finding treasures in the local second hand and antique shops. Sometimes you find just what you need for a project.

Debbie Klann (#770, debbieklann) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a Beginner Farmgirl Shutterbug badge!

"This badge required learning about several photography terms and techniques. They are:

FStop: this controls the size of the aperture, which is the opening in the lens that lets in light. A low FStop means a larger aperture, resulting in more light and a blurry background. A high FStop will give a deeper depth of field, getting most of your imagine in focus.

Shutter Speed: the amount of exposure time to the light. A fast speed is good when you have less light. Moving subjects will appear frozen. A slow shutter speed will result in blurred objects. This is great for capturing moving water, for instance.

ISO: how sensitive your sensor is to light. Lower settings are good for outdoors, bright days, etc. Higher settings will depend on the amount of light that you are working with. A setting of 800+ would be used in night time photography.

Depth of Field: the area of an image in front of and behind the point of focus that appears acceptably sharp.

Rule of Thirds: a traditional composition rule, based on the idea of dividing the frame in 3 equal segments, like a tic-tac-toe board. Key elements should be placed along these lines, or at an intersection, to get the best effect.

Leading Lines: Lines in a photo's composition that lead the eye from one part to another. They emphasize focal points. They can be natural or man-made and add depth, perspective and movement to an image.

Framing: a compositional technique that draws attention to the subject by using elements within the scene to create a frame around it.

I shared 20 different photos within my Henhouse chatroom."

Debbie Klann (#770, debbieklann) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a Beginner Permaculture badge!

"Permaculture: a way to design systems that meet human needs and works with nature, connecting humans, plants, animals and the earth. It aims for lasting productive systems. It's all about creating efficient, small scale systems that use nature's power, not fossil fuels. It combines practices from ag and horticulture, such as soil conservation and organic farming; with integrated farming systems such as aquaculture, intercropping and trellising; with gardening techniques, like crop rotation; and appropriate technology, such as water collection. Permaculture focuses on a "closed loop system", which is where waste is turned into resources. It includes composting organic waste and recycling nutrients. Also, finding new uses for materials that would otherwise be thrown away, such as using gray water for plants.

Lasagne gardening is a no till, no dig technique that involves layering organic materials to create a rich, nutrient dense soil for gardening. It's also known as sheet composting. It suppresses weeds and enriches the soil as the layers decompose.
Hugelkutur has been used for centuries in eastern Europe and Germany. It's a type of raised and mounded garden bed, built from rotten logs and plant debris and then topped with compost and soils. They can start out at 5-6' in height but as materials break down they will sink to around 2 ft. high after several years.

As I have mostly flower beds and little garden space, I'm not sure that I would have room for something like hugelkutur or lasagne gardening. I do love the concept of lasagne gardening, it definitely would be the way to go if I were to create new beds at some point. A longtime friend of mine has been using the hugelkutur method for a couple of years now and is very happy with it.

I think right now a compost pile and using gray water would be a good start for my gardening needs."
