Nancy Joplin (#8352, Nancy Joplin) has received a certificate of achievement in Outpost for earning a Beginner Outstepping badge!
"To earn this badge, I went day hiking and visited three places that I had never seen before. I identified in the wild my state flower, bird, and tree; I photographed them. I learned how to make a safe campfire.
This badge was fun to earn. I went day hiking to Ice House Canyon in the San Gabriel Mtns. My Husband and I hiked in to Fort Bowie in Arizona. I hiked around Puddingstone Lake in San Dimas, CA.
I identified and photographed my state's flower, bird, and tree. I learned to make a safe campfire in my backyard. I had a great time doing all of this and plan to do more as soon as I can!"

Nancy Joplin (#8352, Nancy Joplin) has received a certificate of achievement in Outpost for earning a Beginner Farmgirl's Best Friend badge!
"I have had many pets over the years. I thought about my favorite one. I researched a pet that I always wanted to have, including cost, temperament, and availability.
We have had dogs, cats, snakes, rats, hamsters, fish, and a tarantula. I always wanted to have a horse, but I realized after some research that at this point in my life having a horse is out of the question. My husband said that if I really want a pet, I should get a fish."

Nancy Joplin (#8352, Nancy Joplin) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning an Expert The Good, Bad, and Ugly ... Bugs badge!
"To earn this badge, I needed to make my garden more attractive to beneficial insects. I was to log how many beneficial insects I could find. After two months of upgrading I was to check and see if the beneficial population had increased.
I have made my garden more attractive to beneficial insects, animals, and birds. I have added flowering plants, insect hotels, birdhouses, lizard hiding places, and watering spots. I also added another birdbath, and more hummingbird feeders to the mix. I have noticed an increase in dragonflies, butterflies, bees, and birds. I have new baby lizards in my yard, too! They are so cute! We hardly had any Japanese Beatles on our peach tree this year!"

Nancy Joplin (#8352, Nancy Joplin) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning an Expert Water Conservation badge!
"I checked my household's water usage for one month. Over the next few weeks following, I was to lower the monthly water usage by 10%.
My husband and I Have always been very frugal with our water usage. We only use our dishwasher when it is full, we don't run water in the sink when we brush our teeth or wash our hands. We take very quick showers and don't allow the water to run. We fix any leaks immediately. We wash full loads of laundry. We collect water to help with summer watering. Our water bill over a whole year fluctuates very little following a seasonal pattern. We have not managed to lower our usage by 10%, but we continue to be as frugal as possible with our water usage and plan to continue to do so."

Nancy Joplin (#8352, Nancy Joplin) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning a Beginner Cheesemaking badge!
"I started out by making yogurt. I learned about proper milk handling, good aseptic technique with the starter, and proper temperature control.
I found out that using a good thermometer was the key to proper temperature control. I started out by sanitizing all of the equipment that I was going to use with hot water and soap. Then I heated the milk to 180°F to change the proteins for thickness and kill any bacteria. Next, I cooled the milk to 115°F to activate the starter culture and added the culture. I made sure to stir it in thoroughly. I incubated it warm for the correct time. I then refrigerated it. Homemade yogurt is amazing!!!"

Nancy Joplin (#8352, Nancy Joplin) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning a Beginner Bread Making badge!
"Earning this badge, I learned the difference between baking powder and baking soda. I baked different types of breads using chemical leavening agents. I was to describe the texture of the different breads.
I learned that baking soda is a chemical compound that creates carbon dioxide when it is mixed with an acid, such as, lemon juice, vinegar, buttermilk, brown sugar, sour cream, or molasses. It is also known as sodium bicarbonate or bicarbonate of soda. Baking powder is a mixture of baking soda, cream of tartar (a dry acid), and cornstarch to help keep the two from reacting. I also learned that there are two types of baking powder, single-acting and double-acting. Single-acting works when a liquid is added, while double-acting works when combined with liquid and again when it is heated."

Christine Kenney (#8680, bellepic) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning an Intermediate Relaxation badge!
"I continued to note things that calm me for two weeks. I find "checking it off the list" to be calming, so have a habit of doing a 10 minute guided meditation now. Yet paradoxically, sitting still is generally the opposite of relaxing for me. Therefore, I gave myself permission to explore other restorative activities as well.
Others may see it as drudgery, but I find puttering around the house tidying and decluttering hugely relaxing if there is no time pressure like visitors coming. Some other favorites my fellow sisters may enjoy trying are puzzles and Lego kit assembly, unhurried farmer's market shopping, mindful chocolate snacking, reading and perusing magazines, and journaling."

Christine Kenney (#8680, bellepic) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning a Beginner Pay It Forward badge!
"We spend about $4.10/home cooked meal.
I figured out which organization hosts the long bread lines I see at our closest middle school and set up a recurring $25/month recurring donation.
I also skipped lunch to help pack food boxes for another food shelf on MLK day.
Full write-up here: https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2026/01/pay-it-forward.html
The scale seems to think skipping a few meals might be good for my body composition!
My daughter and I are looking forward to finishing our can drive to fulfill the intermediate level of the badge. Hopefully in the process we find an organization which will let her interact more directly with the food shelf "customers.""

Christine Kenney (#8680, bellepic) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning a Beginner Unprocessed Kitchen badge!
"I experimented with making mochi dough-covered acai sorbet balls to [sometimes] replace Bubbies Cookies and Cream mochi from the store.
Full blog posted here: https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2026/01/unprocessed-kitchen.html
My daughter ate one for dessert without complaining! Success!
They aren't as uniform as the store-bought ones, but maybe I will get better with more practice. I love that this technique opens up the possibility of creating a lot of new flavors. It also decreases the number of things I need to record for the "trash audit" we are in the middle of. "

Heather Neeper (#4701, nndairy) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a Beginner Bibliophile Badging badge!
"I finally got a library card!
It was so much fun to browse though the library. I ended up getting books to work on more badges this time. The greatest discovery was that my library lends cake pans! And they have a huge assortment of them. Since I'm usually the cake baker for family birthday parties, I think I'll be taking advantage of this later this year."

Heather Neeper (#4701, nndairy) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning a Beginner Origami badge!
"I researched the history of origami and was surprised to learn it originated in Japan, not China. I wasn't surprised that with the high cost of paper it was originally for the elite or religious ceremonies. I was fascinated to learn that today origami has been used in other applications such as how to fold solar panels into spacecrafts for launching into space and then unfolding easily in outer space.
I practiced some folds and then made a crane and a sailboat.
My sail boat turned out nice, but my crane is tired. He can't hold his head up! Origami is harder than I expected it to be."

Heather Neeper (#4701, nndairy) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning an Intermediate Origami badge!
"I made a goldfish, frog, butterfly, 2 different stars, a heart, a Christmas tree, and 4 different flowers.
The animals turned out well! The little frog will leap. The shapes are good, but one star isn't the best. The flowers on the other hand...well to be honest, they're terrible looking!!! One ended up being a wadded up mess. I used paper that I had on hand rather than buying origami paper and I think that's part of the problem. My paper is too thick for a lot of folds, and the flowers have a lot of folds. I'm amazed at how difficult the easy projects are. I'm a bit nervous to work on a bigger project for the next level."

Carrie Williams (#147, Carrie W) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning an Expert Grow Where You're Planted badge!
"To complete this level of the Grow Where You Are Planted badge, I dug up and transplanted several shoots of lilac to another area of my yard as the start of a floral hedge row between my home and my neighbor’s. I added three hydrangeas, a hibiscus, and moved a quince and a forsythia from a friend’s garden to my yard. I also took a free online Master Gardener course at www.gardentutor.com where I covered 8 modules which included: Site, Style, Selection, Design, Prepare, Preview, Plant, and Maintain. Each module included a section of review and a quiz. This was an excellent course for the average gardener and I learned so much from it. I immediately put the information to use by trimming a few dozens trees and shrubs for a friend and helping her rearrange some of her backyard garden to maximize available sunlight. Lastly, I read the book “Roots Demystified” by Robert Kourik. This was a fascinating book that helped me develop “x-ray vision” in regards to the roots of everything that I grow! He opened my mind to a whole new world of growing and cultivating, and here are few things that stood out especially to me: - When watering trees, water “beyond the drip line”. This means that you look at the tree, envision where rain will drip off the limbs and leaves, and then water BEYOND that line all the way around the tree! I honestly had never thought about the root system below the ground, or that the roots will be growing at the END of the root. I have always watered closer to the base of the tree, where the water does little to no good.
- Be careful when spraying poisons (if you ever need to do such a thing!). Remember that the roots are growing the fastest at the drip line, so don’t spray anything harmful near that area, especially around fruit or other edible plants and trees.
- Think about the depth of the soil when planting bushes and trees. The roots are very likely going to do as deep and the tree will be tall, so make sure there aren’t any barriers or plumbing, electrical materials that may be disturbed or prevent growth.
There was SO much information about planting trees and shrubs that will be pertinent to my future farming/homesteading efforts. I will have to refer to this reference when that time comes so that I can give my plants every chance for success. The author goes fairly in-depth regarding the pros and cons of bare root stock, balled/burlap, container…and then the proper way to prepare the soil dependent on the level of moisture in your area during planting season. So much to consider!
Photo attached is a pic of the hedges that I trimmed for my friend. She was very happy with how they looked!"

Carrie Williams (#147, Carrie W) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning a Beginner Relaxation badge!
"I have spent a lot of time researching ways to relax and de-stress. I have regularly exhausted my adrenal system throughout my life and finally understand the absolute necessity of managing my stress and finding ways to deal with the constant anxiety.
I have tried multiple methods of meditation, but the one that has been absolutely the best for me is to listen to a station that I created on Pandora (ad-free is a must!!) called Healing Frequency Tones Radio. It includes all the levels of frequency that stimulate chakras and help to “center” my wildly active brain. Nothing has ever helped me as much as this!! I get a great mix of Indian Flute and instrumental music along with nature sounds and calming vocals. No matter what my mood or situation, this station brings me to a place where I can calm my whole body and mind. I have been using this station for a couple years now.
It is totally worth the monthly fee for no ads on Pandora. I bring my music to the beach, to the preserve for a walk, or simply listen on my couch."

Carrie Williams (#147, Carrie W) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning an Intermediate Relaxation badge!
"While listening to my Healing Frequency station, I have found a few activities that help me meditate and relax. I sometimes do the simple yoga moves that I know, sometimes I do simple stretches, sometimes I walk at the local preserve. Some days I sit outside my local coffeehouse and write in my journal. Most days for several months now, I lay my head back and let the music wash over me. I have suffered several losses since November and most days the tears flow freely while I let my mind float to a simpler place where jobs and relationships are not a concern.
This has helped me survive a very difficult period."

"My absolute favorite activity for dealing with stress is to go dancing!! I have been line dancing for 14 years now and it has gotten me through the absolute worst of times. I try to attend at least two classes or events a week, and when I can’t attend, I dance in my living room. It works for stress every single time.
I also use a great app for tracking my daily breathing exercises, stretching, gratitude, and squats/pushups. This helps me to REMEMBER to do them (the hardest part!!) as well as track my progress as far as increasing each activity for growth.
I’m in my third month of tracking and it is getting easy to remember to add my activities to my day without being reminded."

Christine Kenney (#8680, Bellepic) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning an Intermediate Pay It Forward badge!
"We collected 50 cans and donated them to the OC Rescue Mission to help families in need.
Since we are skipping our weekly grocery shop in order to consume perishables before we go on a trip, we had extra wiggle room in our grocery budget.
My daughter and I made a deal that for every math question she answered, I would sponsor a "can." Then we went to the grocery store and picked them out.
Another fun way we have done this in the past is to spend Halloween "trick-or-treating" for cans around the neighborhood.
The highlight of this errand for my daughter is that there is a playground right across the street. We went there afterwards to celebrate a successful mission and just happened to stumble upon her twin best friends from preschool! Several of the twin's classmates are residents of the Rescue Mission. It felt so good to know that our donation was helping the actual kids on the playground."

Christine Kenney (#8680, Bellepic) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning a Beginner Recycling badge!
"Young Cultivator Fallon and I researched curbside recycling and found a commercial recycler in walking distance from our house that would pay us for our CRV (redemption value) plastic, glass, and aluminum packaging.
Findings here: https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2026/01/recycling.html
This settled the confusion for me on to-go coffee cups. The plastic top and insulation sleeve can be recycled (or reused!), but the plastic-lined cardboard cup itself is trash. Now I keep a glass mason jar with a screw on lid in my car cupholder to avoid having to bother with any waste now and found my favorite coffee shop gives me a $0.10 discount for BYOC and still manage to pour beautiful latte art designs into my unorthodox vessel. It helps to get one with the ounces labeled on the side so you know what size drink will fit.
The persistent mystery for us is what to do with shrink wrap, plastic bags and plastic film. This even includes the windows in mail envelopes. The residential single stream recyclers don't want it because it clogs up their sorting machines. This also flummoxed Eve Schaub in her delightful but depressing book, Year of No Garbage."

Christine Kenney (#8680, Bellepic) has received a certificate of achievement in Cleaning Up for earning an Intermediate Recycling badge!
"I am several weeks into auditing all the trash I personally generate which should be a step in the right direction for several badges. In the first week, this included 1,647 grams or 3.6 pounds of recyclables.
I've found ways to avoid creating extra trash and recycling by buying in bulk, bringing my own bags, and finding DIY recipes for convenience foods that have a lot of packaging. That said, my daughter was onto me when I started serving up these DIY mochi desserts in reused packaging.
If you want all the gritty details of the trash audit, follow along here: https://steamstead.blogspot.com/2026/01/trash-audit.html
Even after the holiday season, this underscored how much delivery packaging is coming into the house. Seldom a day goes by when there isn't a cardboard box or mailer in my photo log.
How do other sisters navigate this challenge when their trash is combined with room-mates or family? 3 weeks in, I have settled for taking responsibility for waste I enable my daughter to create (i.e. Happy Meals, abandoned crafts). I let my spouse make his own decisions and every once in a while swallow my squeamishness to fish something of his out of the trash I believe to be recyclable, or out of the recycling that I have come to appreciate is problematic for recyclers. It is so hard to keep your eyes on your own assignment!"

Amie Wright (#8717) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning a Beginner Origami badge!
"Hello, at my very first sisterhood as an official member, our hostess Toni organized a butterfly tea party with origami! We had a wonderful afternoon sipping tea and learning about the origins of origami. She printed documents of how the art spread across the globe and became a tradition for marking special occasions. She shared a story of a young lady in a hospital who folded 100 cranes for good fortune and became famous, she even had a statue marking her high spirits in Japan. When I came home I googled images of her statue and used YouTube to find cranes to fold. It led me down a rabbit hole of many many different items I want to make.
I've had a wonderful time making two cranes: one large and one tiny, where I had to be patient and precise with my accuracy. I made a tiny boat expanding my simple fold a bit more. My don was very impressed with my new skill and made a request for a frog to challenge me. I'm already working on my next badge. Origami is fascinating. I'm really enjoying this new-to-me hobby."

Amie Wright (#8717) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning a Beginner Aprons badge!
"I started by looking for my grandma's pattern cut out of a brown paper bag. And then I pieced together three different remnant fabrics I have from different household projects: a denim from my daughter's Halloween costume a few years ago, a floral duck cloth from pillow covers, and some quilting cotton we used for a bathroom curtain. I didn't have enough of just one type so my apron looks like a patchwork of my memories. The first evening was pinning and clipping, the next whole day was sewing and convincing my machine it doesn't need a turn up and tlc ... I'll need to work on that asap. It's been a long time since I've sat and sewn for pleasure.
I absolutely love my half apron and look forward to bringing it to our next sisterhood meeting. It truly does initiate a can-do mood when I put it on before starting dinner. Its a uniform for getting it done and on the table. And the pocket is so very convenient!"

Amie Wright (#8717) has received a certificate of achievement in Each Other for earning a Beginner Lost Art of Letter Writing badge!
"This morning I looked at all my stationary and put together a pile of stickers, note cards and pretty, colorful pens. I realized I didn't have very many birthday cards and also wanted to pick up some Valentines cards to send to a few ladies in my sisterhood that live afar. I went to the store this afternoon and collected a few more greeting cards and a few packets of wildflower seeds to tuck in for a special birthday surprise when I mail them. When I got home I realized someone ate my last Christmas truffle out of my pretty tin and noticed it's the perfect size for my letter writing kit.
I'm new to join my sisterhood and recently received a list of everyone's birthday and address. I filled in names and birthdays on my work book calendar and plan on snail mailing each sister a very special letter on their birthday this year. I just love getting something in the mailbox that's not a bill!"

"I finished my expert mosaic wall hanging. It took 5 days to complete. I used glass tiles, teal rock and glass cabochauns. It was challenging to do the grout and the detail scraping and wiping.
The project turned out nice."

"I completed the Hunter Education Program on 10/25/2025. My grandson and I went bird hunting on 1/25/2026. We went after 3 birds, but did not successfully take any down. I made a beef teriyaki jerkey on 1/26/2026.
It went well."

Candy Hogan (#8283) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning an Expert Ink Slingers badge!
"I finished my Grandmother's Memories book (31 pages) with as many stories I could remember her telling me.
The 2 books I read were: "Tooth Fairy's Night" and "Can You Fly"
Then I read a 3rd book "Love Monster" because I really thought I was going to write a children's book for this badge.
I wrote My Grandmother's Memories (31 pages) because I wanted to share her stories with my grandkids before the stories get lost when I pass on.
Then I created an A,B,C coloring book dedicated to Mary Jane's Sisterhood Program (28 pages). Each alphabet page ties into the badge program. For example, "R" is for the Recipes badge which is also the Jubilee Theme for this year 2026. "A" is for Aprons, because Mary Jane always wears an apron.
I had the most fun with the coloring book, but I also am glad to have written down Grandmother's memories to pass down to future generations.
