ladies, Would anyone be interested in doing a "jar" block swap?? Fill your jars with fruits or veggies. These would be an 8 1/2 X 12 1/2 inch block. (8X12 after sewn into a quilt) If enough are interested I will make a sign up sheet and a due date of May 31st. Send all your blocks to me along with a self address stamped envelope with the same amount of postage used to mail your blocks. Email me and I will give you my home address. I would like at least 9 people. That would make a nice wall hanging. But if more join that would be great! http://quilting.about.com/od/blockofthemonth/ss/tal_jar_quilt.htm
Since it is a free pattern I think it would be ok if I were to copy and past the directions right here. Black fabric two 2" x 8-1/2" strips for block top and bottom two 2" x 8" strips for block sides four 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" squares for corners of jar body two 2" x 3" strips for jar lid unit Brown or your choice of fabric for jar lid one 2" x 3-1/2" strip for jar cap Fruit or vegetable print fabric contents of jar one 5-1/2" x 8" piece Use a 1/4" seam allowance to assemble the quilt block, placing units right sides together for sewing and matching raw edges carefully. Use straight pins to hold patches together if it helps you keep them aligned. 1.Make the tall jar body by sewing a small black square to each corner of the bug jar novelty print. Just like you would when making snowball blocks. Trim off the corners. 2.Sew a 2" x 8" green strip to each long side of the jar body. Press seam allowances towards the outer strips. 3.Sew a 2" x 8-1/2" black strip to the bottom of the Step 2 unit. 4.Sew a short black strip to each side of the jar lid strip. Press seam allowance towards the jar lid fabric. 5.Sew a 2" x 8-1/2" black strip lengthwise to the top of the jar lid unit. Press seam allowance towards the top strip. 6.Sew the top/lid unit to the top of the jar quilt block. Press seam allowance towards the jar lid unit. Your completed jar block should measure 8-1/2" x 12-1/2". If your block is smaller than it should be, or skewed, press again and recheck. Last day for sign up will be April 6, 2008 1)smoothiejuice Received 75/2008 2)scgwagner Received 3)deepsouthmamma Received 5/15/2008 4)yarnmamma khartquilt 5/23/2008 5)celticheart Received 6/23/2008 6)Pearlsnjeans Received 6/22/2008 7)khartquilt Received 4/30/2008 8)SheilaC Received 4/24/2008 9)nouveau_farmchick 6/02/2008

add me too....I had to look close to realize that the jar holds a print fabric? I don't have a working printer. Could someone send me a hard copy of the pattern? Sounds like a wonderful wall hanging!

Ok, I think I have everyone listed. If I don't please let me know. Looks like we need two more people to make 9. I think that everyone will like this block. It is kind of simple. You just have to watch your seam allowance. Oh and I am so glad to see new names in this swap. Sarah, Marcia, Sheila and Vicki. Welcome. I have not yet done a swap with you. Thank you for joining. I love block swaps. I love receiving the packages in the mail and sorting them out. Everyone is alway so creative. I see so many different fabrics. I truly love it. Thank you all for joining and lets have fun!

Linda, I sent you a printed copy yesterday. Let me know that you received it. It really is not that hard. You can do it Linda! I have a lot of confidence in you. All the other blocks that I have received from you were great!

I finished 9 blocks yesterday. But, I was not careful with my seam allowances. I need to do them again. On the 5th I am going to the fabric store and pick up more fabric. I have an apple pattern, and I still have enough to do them over with, but now I am going to look for a veggy fabric.

Good Lord! And I was so proud of myself for going to JoAnn's with three kids in tow and coming out with 2 fruity fabrics, black & jar lid fabric. Mine's still in the bag! Aaaaahhh!
Way to go, Kathy!

Does the brown jar lid have to be solid brown? I have a batik that is dark brown and I think it would look good, but want to make sure.

Ladies, The lid can be any color you like!
I have a guild meeting on saturday and then I am off to the fabric store (again). I think that is the best part of making these blocks. You have to purchase fabric. I can't think of a more relaxing way of spending my time then in a fabric shop. Now if I only had endless amounts of money.....
