Little Pansy is proud of her Spanish-Native American ancestry. The ledgend is told that Pansy's great-great-great grandfather, Ferdinand De Vacca, was a voyager with Hernando de Soto who explored North America.
Travelling through territory -- (part of which would one-day become the state of Kentucky) -- during a harsh winter, they came upon an Indian village.
Ferdinand met and fell in love with the beautiful daughter of the tribal Shaman. The story is told that because of his kindness and gleaming gold teeth, he was revered among the tribe .. and it was plotted to hide him and claim his body had been found mauled by a bear .. until DeSoto's departure from this area.
Pansy-in-the-Mist was the beautiful maiden's name .. and the members of her tribe remained in Kentucky for many generations .. and now little Pansy is the last of the tribe in Kentucky.
She has been passed from family to family on the frontier and has now been sent to Sister Mercy's Foundlin' Home in hopes that she will find a permanent home of her own in the care of a loving family.
Pansy's skirt is made from a wonderful olde time-weary quilt .. her blouse is a beautifully embroidered linen (both of which are from former generations) and she loves a morning cup of tea! Sister Mercy let her choose her favorite teacup and saucer from the cupboard to bring with her.
PANSIES are her favorite flower and PURPLE her favorite color .. she has found a lovely purple silk ribbon and tied a bow in her hair.
Pansy can be adopted for $20. (which includes her train fare).
She hopes you love history because she wants to learn even more.

Frannie- I haven't got y MJF mag in the mailbox yet, but did go all over town until I found one in a store! I was SO SO SO happy to see your little Rag Chillun in there. Very happy for you dearie- the pages are gorgeous, and I was so proud for & of you! I showed the girls here who we adopted from the Foundlin' Home...they was grinnin from ear to ear (except they don't got any...)

well chile .. in louisville i checked the BIG BORDERS .. and they don't have it .. came back through E-town at Barnes and Noble .. and they don't have it either!!!!! i'm hoping my 'subscription' copy will get here in time for my early May show .. for 'show and tell' .. did you ever see them in Mercantile Gatherings Magazine? and they made the Baltimore Sun and Baltimore TV when i lived in Maryland .. lordy! i've been 'makin' babies' a l-o-n-g time now!
