Greetings from Middle Tennessee and from where my late granddaddy Elsie James Nixon used to say..."the garden spot of the world." A place where..."Home grown "tomaters" are best eaten "right off the vine." and where my kids hear me say..."Don't bury me in the graveyard...cremate me and put me under a tomato plant!"

I live on 10 acres of what used to be farmland...now we just mow it. I think that's a shame and want to grow things here. My husband is a "city boy" that just wants to ride the tractor. Since I don't want to write him a "Dear John Deer" letter I need some ideas. We both have jobs that take up most of our time...but I want to start a small home business that will help us send the boys to school and give us something fun to do when we retire from our first careers.

I have two boys (11 and 15) and one of them had the idea to grow fishing worms. I looked into that and now am turning my junk mail clutter and coffee grounds into compost. He gets the worms, I get the dirt. There just isn't enough of it to do much of anything...well, except make my tomatoes grow nicely.

Keep the SON in your eyes!

Hey Kat! Welcome from the ORegon coast. I think Tennessee is a very pretty state. My DH is from Arkansas so we drove through Tn often. Glad to have you on board. Simply, Julia

Grace and peace to all...

I took my boys to their bus this morning and enjoyed the drive through the smog. I say that because in rural Middle Tennessee, the farmers have tobacco barns "smoking" the tobacco and there is a natural and man-made fog all around us this cool morning.

The faint smell of tobacco curing is a familiar smell in these parts. It is a tradition that may well be on the decline in our county, whose quote is "Home of dark fired tobacco."

My 'big sister' (57)was recently diagnosed with a lung disease brought on by years of smoking the very product of our local economy. She says she has stopped smoking for now but intends to start again at 70(That's a whole 'nother story...for later).

Many of our friends and neighbors raised their last crops of tobacco this past summer. It will effect everyone, because it has driven the local economy for years (farmers sport the bumper sticker, "TOBACCO PAID FOR THIS TRUCK!"). I know highschool boys(and girls) that have raised an acre for their college tuition. Our deacons at church are worried that the tithes will be down and we may have to make cuts. (Isn't that sad?)

I am grabbing my camera this morning and heading out to make some photos. Hopefully, the sun won't burn off all the fog/smoke before I can record a little history in the making. I wish everyone would stop smoking for their health...but I will miss the barns...and that ever faint smell of tobacco curing in the fall.

Kathy: I thought I already posted to you, but I must have lost it. :-)
I have family in Tennessee . . . Fayetteville. Uncle Elgie Riddle still farms there. I've visited and it is really beautiful.

Greetings from Lousisana, Kat! I love your forum name! I just returned from my first visit to your state. LOVELY! I was in Nashville, Franklin and Arrington. Is that close to you? The tobacco farms sound mystical. SO glad you're taking pictures. I just wonder if someone could come up with another use for it?

A welcome quote for you:

"truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun." ecc. 11:7

We're glad you're here and look forward to hearing what appears in that field....sunflowers, perhaps??
