Okay never mind, I'm not going grocery shopping, I'm driving 600 miles to Klamath Falls to have lunch at Cheryl's:) Karen - we ordered 25 chickens - 13 broilers and then 1 White Delaware, 1 black Australor, 2 Buff Orpingtons (1 is a rooster), 2 Araucana, 1 Buckeye, 1 Golden Laced Wyandotte, 2 Cuckoo Maran, 1 Barred Plymouth Rock and 1 Welsummer, whew!! Better get busy building a chicken home:) The computers were down at Meyer Hatchery today - Dawn, you picked a good day to be off:) - so the gal I talked to couldn't give me a definite date, but it sounds like end of March, beginning of April or so. Hey Dawn - you should ask for a commission with all of us farmgirls ordering from your hatchery!! I'm very excited about the chickens - my DH is too which means that we actually will get the coop built and all Amy Grace

Holy moly, you gals have been chatty! Is it just the season?
Karen ~ Yeah, I've gone back and forth. One thing that's also slowing me down is that I never had pets growing up. We babysat my cousin's goldfish for a week one time, and my sister and I thought that was fabulous. Then in college my ex wanted ferrets. I stupidly went along with it, and guess who did all the cage maintenance, training, and paid for the vet bills? Yeah. I couldn't wait to get rid of them - oh, he moved out of state after being dumped by his next fiancee and one day his friend showed up knocking on my door dropping the ferrets off. The ex fianally called me to explain a week later. *sigh*
I wish we had a big enough yard... Heck, you know what damage I could do with just an acre of land? Oh baby.
Kelley ~ Exactly! Mine are 5yo, 2.5yo and 7mo. The two olders are fine for trucking around and playing in the yard by themselves or together (usually amid squeals and screams depending on who stole what from the other), but yeah, the babe. Mine love being worn in the mei tai, but not when I bend over. And I lean or bend over when I'm planting/weeding/whatever, what with the dirt being on the ground and all.
Hmmm... I may not know as much as some of you gals regarding heirlooms... Most of my interest is from avoiding Monsanto and terminator seeds, being able to save my own seed, and organic of course. Otherwise I'd have some sick kids because I let them run around - both my boys tend to go for the berries when they're ripe. Sometimes covertly, sometimes not. I do sometimes yap with the garden gal (Julie I want to say) at our local home/farm/feed store once or five times a year, she's a hoot. They stock things from several seed places (including Irish Eyes), and are also one of the 2-3 places you can get baby chicks/ducks/geese/turkeys in the spring.
So is there a farm girl seed savers stash somewhere? I only started saving seed last year, but am hoping/planning to go hog wild this year. With the goal being not having to buy much seed, if at all. We'll see how it works out.
Karen ~ I want to say 80% less different varieties from, say, 1900. Bigger seed companies drop the unique, funny looking stuff that doesn't sell as much and it just drops off the radar usually. Until folks like Baker Creek come along. As for GE seed... I believe 70% of corn grown in America is GMO (so almost everything processed you buy that has a corn product/derivative in it has GMO in it), then all the hybrid seed (at least half the market of veggies I want to say?), blah blah blah. I know I read about it somewhere... Maybe the book Seeds of Deception? I think that's the one... the other one that comes to mind is You Can't Microwave the Revolution.
Dawn ~ I'm a dork too. Not the worst thing in the world. Some gals may want something pretty and shiny for a present, but I was giddy when hubby got me a pressure canner one year and the dehydrator this year for Christmas. For my birthday I want peach and apple trees, and for him to do some tilling.
The newest Michael Pollan book? What's it called? On the radio one day a while ago, hubby and I heard him talking, and it was some lecture he was doing called The Cornification of America. I thought it was a book he was talking about, but alas. So I haven't been able to soak in all that he was talking about from then.
Corinne ~ I'm zone 5. According to the USDA I'm zone 6, but I don't believe them. When I can't safely plant tomatoes until Memorial Day, yeah. I guess that could make me a zone 4, but eh. I'll stick with 5.

Hey, AG, on your way to Cheryl's would you swing by Missouri and pick me up? It's raining here and I don't feel like driving.
This is just like the early days! It's good to have a mega-posting day once in awhile. Alas, as we've learned, ya just can't do it every day and expect the rest of your life to stay on track. But today is my day so WOO HOO!
Lanna, you're pretty much on target and doing it from memory. Of course, you're younger than me so you have more memory left. I found my catalog answer and guess who posted it? Yep, moi! Here's the post: http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=24908&whichpage=10

Lanna - the newest Michael Pollan book is "In Defense of Food" it came out last year but will be in paperback this year so I have waited to get it. Yeah we are chatty today, kind of cool that it happened on a day when I am actually at home - those of you who are new mavens watch out, there are days when I have come home from work and had to read 12 pages just to catch up with one day's chatting - we tend to be prolific!! AG: Haha... that's so funny about work. Oh well. Welsummers huh, you're looking at mid April with those. We doubled our breeding stock on those this year and still are running out. But you got a nice flock over all! You'll love the ameracauna's. Hopefully I'll get to pack your order!

yay my long lost twin! yes, I DO CRACK MYSELF UP! My co-workers look at me like I've grown a tail! haha...
I just rescued Myrt...again. He fell into a 50 gallon drum of oil. I bathed him but he is still oily. He is shivering in my arms and looking at me like....he's sick or something. This cat is more than a handful at this point!

What did you use to bathe him? Murphy's Oil soap might help, last ditch effort use Dawn detergent, I've used that to take the lanolin out of wool so I could spin it.
