I'm not sure what to say, but after spending some time reading through the different threads, I feel I am right at home with all you farmgirls. So many kindred spirits here - it's comforting to know I'm not alone.
I look forward to sharing farmgirl experiences with all of you. |

Thanks so much for the warm welcome. This is just an example of what I was talking about - everyone is so nice. It's refreshing to find a place to share farm talk with like minded gals.
I have a few minutes so I'll share a bit about my life here on our little farm. We moved here to this old farmstead about 3 years ago. It was almost unlivable, but it's slowly becoming our home. We raise our own meat, eggs, milk, vegetables and some fruits.
There's not much free time around here, but I do enjoy sewing, quilting, crafting, decorating, gardening, cooking, preserving......and well, just about everything that goes along with a farm.
My wonderful husband and I will celebrate 30 years (really says a lot about my age) of marriage this December. Yes, it's been that long, but seems to have passed by in a flash. We have 2 beautiful daughters, oldest-married with 2 of the cutest sons, youngest-at home going to college. A close knit very large extended family keeps us busy.

You sound just like me, Christine. Been married 30 years, have 2 grown daughters. One has 3 DDs, though. Our youngest is working full time and going to school to get her masters. Graduates next Dec. We live on a small farm, too, in GA. Raise all our own food and milk goats. How neat is that?
So what do you milk, goats or cows? I have 5 Lamamchas and a Nubian all due in a few months. So we are without goat milk but a friend has 2 Jerseys and we've been getting milk from her.

Toni, you are way south of me. I'm up north very close to the MI stateline. Oh, a 5 week old baby - how sweet! I just love babies.
Kris, yes we do seem to have a lot in common. It's hard to find like-minded friends around here. We live in a rural/farming community, but most farmgirls don't do what I do.LOL
We raise a dual purpose cattle breed (Dexter) so we have our own beef and I milk a couple of them. We also tried our hand at raising our own pork. We got our meat back a couple of weeks ago and one taste and we will continue to raise our own pork.

I bought 4 little piggies in Sept. and had them butchered a few weeks ago, too. I pastured raised them and had them in the garden, too. They really grew fast. All that good goat milk, I guess.
Ok, I have to give you a recipe I came up with last week. You have got to try it. I took a shoulder roast and put it in my cast iron roaster. I poured apple cider over it and cut up 2 onions and threw a few cloves of garlic in with salt and pepper. Cook it about 250-300 for several hours and it is amazingly good! It was so tender and we could not stop eating it. I'm doing another one tomorrow while we are at church. I already have it ready and I'll just pop it in the oven before church.
I will probably not raise anymore here. They tore up my front pasture so bad. It's a muddy pit out there. But it was worth it. I tell you what, though, I was so sore from carrying food to them all day, I could hardly walk. oNce they were gone after a few days, I was all better. I was hoping that's what it was and not some other problem.
And I have a 7 month old red heifer that i have had since she was a baby. I will try to milk her when she has a calf. Gonna at least try. I'd much rather milk goats. Much easier.

Kris, good cooks think alike! I make our pork roasts the same way. Did you make gravy? It's great. My BIL got some pork from us and he calls every week for a recipe. He's a single Dad with 2 sons. I told him to try this exact recipe last week, but haven't heard if he tried and/or liked it.
Your home will smell so good when you get back from church tomorrow. It's so nice to come in to a meal waiting for you.
Our snow is melting away and it's warming a bit so we'll be grilling tomorrow. I have steaks out.
I can imagine the muddy mess in your yard. Thankfully, we were able to give our pigs an area in the barnyard. We weren't able to use them in our garden this time around. It would have been nice. I've read that they "till" it up nicely. Glad your body healed. Those buckets get heavy. My DH did most of the pig feeding while I milked.
You didn't ramble at all. I enjoy hearing what's going on with you as well as other farmgirls. |
