Hello all!
I just purchased Mary Jane's book (my Christmas present to me), finished making more handmade Christmas gifts than I ever have in my life and have actually gotten my sewing machine out and used it (it's electric, no treadle here).
I grew up on a farm in the Midwest, but learned how to do mostly the hard labor chores and not enough of the handmade stuff, although I did learn to can and freeze a garden. In my younger days, I saddled up and rode a horses, chased errant cows back into their rightful pasture, chased just about any livestock to where it should be, ran from mean goats and bulls, planted tobacco and followed it to harvest, put hay up with a pitchfork, threw hay bails, planted gardens, canned or froze most of what was in the garden, made homemade jams, and baked bread. I can still do most of those things in a pinch and there are many of these things that are just fond and not so fond memories that I'm happy not to repeat (see livestock chasing and raising tobacco above ).
My interests are writing, knitting, learning to sew, organic foods and cooking (after a long cooking hiatus, I'm getting the hang of it again). . . and I'm trying to learn to organize my home in a way that is a little playful and not such a drudge. Any ideas anyone has on that, I'd love to hear.
I'm 42, live in North Carolina, near the beach, but I grew up in the Midwest and lived there until 1 1/2 years ago. I am truly a Midwestern Farm Girl at heart, enjoy simple things and hearing the ideas of others.

Hi Theressa! Welcome to the group. You sound like you will fit right in. You have alot of the same interests as alot of us and sounds like you have alot of live experiences that are great. We can learn from you!! I am glad you are here!! Jump right into the conversations!!

Haiku! Welcome Theressa! We have not covered haiku here yet! I cannot believe there is anything we have not covered. But I like yours! Hope to hear more from you.
I am a mid-westerner, too. And I love NC and haikus.

Wow, so many wonderful experiences you have to share! I, too, love the haiku! So far, I've done more of the handmade stuff and not too much of the hard labor, although I do hope to! And I'm sure I will as it looks like this spring I'll be getting an internship at an organic farm! I'd also like some of those creative organization ideas, as keeping things tidy is not one of my strong points! A warm welcome to you!

Welcome Teresa! sounds like you life has been full. I am finding at 45 the less house work the better. Part of doing less is having less. I am in a major simplify mode. Taking lots of things to the local thrift store. I also don't do all the house cleaning on the same day. I just organized all my baking tins, into four old swim locker baskets. It looks so neat that I took the doors off of the kitchen island cabinets in which they live. No I don't have to dig to find them. Baskets and crates are great for organizing. Just start in one room at a time, so you don't get overwhelmed and give up. Have fun! Julia v.
