I'm doing a show in a week and a half that is pretty, how should I put it?, geared for upper income people. There is a private showing, which they bill as a gala, on a Thursday night and the show starts Friday. People pay $75 each to get into the gala to "preshop" and drink wine, and nibble appetizers. It's very difficult to get into this show, so I feel fortunate and I want to fit in. My cousin who has done this show for many years said I need to "dress up - artsy dress is the norm" for the gala, then just nice clothes for the show. Any suggestions on something I could put together to wear to the gala? I am short, 5'1", overweight, and own two pairs of jeans and a pair of bibbed overalls with holes! I will buy something or make something to wear to this, but it can't be outrageously priced. I need some suggestions and some help!!

Hi Sherri, I too am short and overweight so I was thinking about the dress up clothes I have that I never wear. I have a very simple, ankle length black velvet dress that has short sleeves. A real classic. I don't wear it anymore and I would be happy to mail it to you. If I send it priority mail it should get to you in a couple of days. This is the kind of dress that you can add jewelry to really wow it up or add a jacket. Let me know if you would like it. I can send it out tomorrow if you want it, you can just have it I am just paying it forward from a kindness I received when I needed some clothing...email me if interested.
Some people look for happiness, others create it!

I always think classic black, maybe a nice pair of pants with black pumps, a nice black shirt- I like those women's tuxedo shirts and some bold accessories- I just looked at Target and they have some nice bracelets and necklaces for less than $10 a piece.

Sherri, A simple black dress would be perfect. So nice of Rose to do that. I'd check thrift stores for dressy jackets to go with. I saw a beautiful sequined one here once but couldn't even imaginge where I would wear it. It was very inexpensive. A glitty scarf--oh oh the crocheted one you made for your daughter would be great--could even thrown in a few sequins or beads maybe. Also I bet people would comment on the scarf and want one. You could take preorders. Congratulations on getting in. JoAnn

Thanks - those are great ideas! I am really a fashion dunce - I have no self confidence in that area, so I really appreciate your input.

Sherri, I agree a simple black dress or slacks & dressy silky or light fabric blouse with a chain or pearls. A jacket or scarf would also be appropriate. and black pump heels or flats.

Add a shawl to that lovely black dress and you are in!!! Check the thrift for the shawl. I do know there might still be some lovely cheap (5$) shawls at Walmart. At least there are here in my neck of the woods. They are paisley w/fringe and come in a wide range of colors.... Of course any shawl will do! :-)

A nice simple black dress would be perfect, and don't forget your accessories! A large, shiny silver or beaded necklace in any color would work wonders.

The dress sounds perfect...I hope it works for you. For the show you could dress it down with a short jeans jacket over it and pearls! You would match your shop style and still look groovy-classy. Not sure if you have a jeans jacket but can you borrow one from a friend?

I've done a ew fashion shows in my career as an esthetician/make up artist, and one thing that looks so good on my plus sized bod-or any body for that matter- is a wrap dress. I have a loud brown 70's print one that I wear a brown cami under and a pair of brown kitten heels (cuz me feet would rather be in boots) and it looks smashing. I bought mine at Kmart and I get compliments on it over and over. I swear by a wrap style dress. Makes you look like you have a waist, pairs down the chest and way easy and comfy to boot!

Glenda,. what a nice thing to say. Also, if you go for bold jewelry, make a statement with one big piece. Not a whole bunch. I'm a bracelet girl...the more, the merrier!

Wellllllllllll, I spent the night last night, after the "affair" at my cousin's house and stayed up there for the show today. I just got home to sleep, then back to the show. The "gala" was pretty much what I expected - champagne, hoeur doureves, no I mean, heuor durves, no I mean, hoeur derves, no, I mean appetizers, high-brow music, a lot of people with their pinky sticking out, but I survived! Wore the beautiful black dress Rose sent me, impossibly uncomfortable shoes, but I mingled and I sold quite a bit of stuff, so I say it was a S-U-C-E-S-S-S-S-S!!!!. Now, off to bed so I can get up and go back up there again. Oh, and I did have one exciting moment today - the manager of the Tacoma Art Museum store asked if I was interested in selling my jackets in the museum store, so that's pretty cool! It's over Sunday afternoon, so I'll let you know how I did. Thanks all for your support!

Oh Glenda I am so NOT in my element!!! I'll just bluff my way through til the end. I am kind of having fun though, because all of these serious high dollar shoppers come through with a studious look on their face as they're shopping but when they see my whimsical childrens clothing, they never fail to smile and that's a real reward for my work. It's nice to lighten and brighten someone's day, even if they don't have any little children to buy for!
