Hello all-
I found this forum and was sooo excited that there were women out there who have succeeded in dreams so similar to mine! My name is Laura Ann and I'm 18. My boyfriend and I are both in college and plan to marry and start our own organic, grass-fed dairy after we graduate. I currently work on a bulk dairy where I first met my boyfriend, TC. He was quite shocked that when I showed up to do straw and chores that morning...
I really dont have any questions right now..but I'm SURE I will!

Yay, another Laura! Although your name is way cooler than mine since it's got two parts! I've considered adding Beth to mine, since my middle name is Elizabeth...Laura Beth sounds like a pie-bakin', cow milkin', garden tillin' name! Ok, enough about that! I like to write a lot and I tend to ramble, so don't mind me! That's wonderful that you found someone who shares your dream! Some people scoff at those who find lasting love at such a young age, but I say why not? At 20, I believe I've found mine! Tell us more about yourself! How did you get into farming? What kind of classes are you taking in school? Can't wait to hear more!

Well thank you all!
Right now I go to SUNY College of Environmental Science and Foresty for natural history and Interpretation. TC is going to Cornell for Ag Management and Business next year. My favorite classes right now are my drawing studio and global environment.
I dont live on the farm but Ive gardened my entire life. No power tools, all by hand...lots of hoeing! I think thats what drew me to farming originally. My mother never let us have animals so I started working on a horse farm then my friend asked if I wanted to help out on the dairy farm with him. I guess the rest is history...
and my name isnt that special, Ann is my middle name. I just use it because I like the way it sounds... ;)

Laura Ann, I guess I didn't even look at where you where from when I posted before....then I saw the SUNY I thought you must be in NY. Where is Clarence? So cool that you want to have a organic dairy. I work with a woman whose husband runs an organic dairy in Richfeild Springs. I have spent amny nights talking to her about organic products and the in and out of organic dairying...how much longer do you have for school? All the best, Stacy

Clarence is near Buffalo...at least thats the closest city. SUNY-ESF is in Syracuse and I have 3 more years. TC is actually a year younger so he has 4 more years.

Laura, are you from Upstate NY originally?
My mom was born and raised in (somewhat to you) nearby Jamestown. Because of my eastern blood (and wanting to be close to Ottawa (Canada), where my then ex-husband was living, I did a stint at a nature center in NY. I was at Rogers Center outside of Sherburne for three months (LONG ago, 1989). New York has some wonderful environmental programs and centers. I'd LOVE to get back for a visit someday.
I spent a few seasons as a park interpreter with the Park Service. I sure miss those days!

Karin, I went to school in Sherburne. We went on many a school field trip to Rogers's. Isn't quite the same as it is in my mermories. My brothers went there on over nights in the bunks they used to have...Never expected to see that on here, as there don't seem to be many east coasters....You should let me know if you ever come to visit ! Wow, Stacy! What a small world!
How far are you from Sherburne now? I tried to find Maryland, NY on my road atlas but even with my glasses, it's harder to see places on maps these days... (Grrrrr! The curse of being over forty!)
I didn't enjoy Rogers as much as I could have. I was too wrapped up in my relationship with my soon-to-be-husband and focused more on that than my everyday experiences. It was cool, though, because we were two of very few interns who got to live in the HUGE stone house across the road from the center. There's another house where they usually live and it wasn't anything like the stone house. We could even park our cars in a garage!
I was there in the winter and it wasn't much of a winter that year. I would LOVE to go back again another season. I was hoping I might get back last June. My mother had her 60th college reunion from Elmira and my brother and I had hoped we could convince her to go and tag along. No luck, unfortunately. I would have liked to have taken her to Jamestown and made a trip to Rogers. Sigh.
If you ever make it out this way (I live less than 100 miles from MaryJane's farm!) you are more than welcome.
