Yippee I am finally here!

DH and I have been looking for property for three years from Phoenix. We finally up and moved in February to Oregon and started a very intense search. We found what we think is a very good property with woods, pasture, a pond, a farmer's garden and plenty of outbuilding space.

Now what to actually DO with it? :)

We will start with goats and chickens while we explore our options. We plan on being as self sustaining as possible with a garden and meat we will grow (chicken, beef, pork, rabbit, lamb, turkeys and ducks too).

I have a ton of questions ready to shoot off next week in the appropriate places.

We also grow two boys at home. This purchase ultimately is for them to learn to do the things they will need to do to provide for themselves.

I am excited to be here. I've come to the site on and off over the years just to get a taste of what I one day would be able to post about.

Congratulations! Way to go! That much land, you can do a lot. I'm sure others have better advice than I do, but I just had to tell you how excited I am for you. Very nice.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. We can hardly sleep we are so excited. I wish the end of May would soon come!
I'll get working on a blog to document our new life for friends and family who are still rather is disbelief why we would want to clean up after animals or live so far away from civilization as they know it. :) I know you all understand though. When my dh was riding through the acreage with the owner before we had decided to purchase it the man stood up on his 4-wheeler while speeding though the fields and looked at my husband and said "Therapy. This is pure therapy." Yup.

Welcome to Oregon Jana. It is beautiful here in the Willamette Valley. DH and I own 7 acres and are in the process of looking for much larger property to finish off our journey to self-sufficency. I'll be watching for your blog. I see in your info on the left it says Sheridan, is that the area you are settling in?

No Sheri this is my first time on a farm. That is why I am so excited - I still don't realize how much work it is. :)

We plan on starting as a hobby farm to get our hands wet and then further develop the farm to its potential - or some potential rather. We want to see how she feels for a while before we make any big decisions.

Cheryl it is south of McMinnville. Not much more than a blip on a map from the looks of it, however, I am an outsider - it could very well be a thriving magnet for farm chicks.

Jana, what a find! I love the Willamette valley & McMinnville in particular! If I weren't nicely at home on ten acres in No. California, I'd be heading that way myself!

It'll be fun watching your progress! Congrats!
