Last summer I tried out a homemade spray to lighten the roots of my "already blond" hair. It worked great and saves me a lot of $ at the beauty salon. This "Blond Cocktail" works great if you want to touch up your roots or add highlights to any shade of blond hair. I don't have a clue if it work on dark hair. I know the old "Sun-In" hair sprays used to turn dark hair orange. At least it did that to my sister's hair!
Here is the very simple recipe:
BLOND COCKTAIL
1 Cup strongly brewed chamomile tea, cooled 1 tablespoon of vodka (I use a super cheap brand) 1 tablespoon of fresh squeezed lemon juice
Mix ingredients into a new spray bottle. When you are going to be out for a few hours on a sunny day, just spray and comb through. Keep for only two weeks, then make a fresh batch when you need it.
I hope this works for anyone who tries it!

Thanks for posting this, Dawn!! I have really light brown hair, but was born blonde, and my hair reverts back to that on a small scale during the sunny months. I want to help it along a bit this year, though, since I'm wearing a hat for work a lot. I'm going to give this a try! :)

That's really neat--I know that lemon juice is a natural lightener but I didn't know about adding vodka and chamomile. I'll have to try it (I used that Sun-In spray when I was in college --I'm glad those days are over! It made my hair real brassy-- Nothing to make you feel sexy like hair the color of a trombone:) Cindy |

You Know, I never could get that sun in to work. I am definitly goingto try this mix though. With the vodka in it, is it stinky? I am sure it would wear off but I am curious anyways and do I spray it in on dry hair or wet hair or doesn't it matter? LOL
For dark hair to be shiny, try 3 cups of hot dark tea, a 1/2 c of vinegar, and a tbsp of rosemary Its a rinse though rather than a leave in spray. You keep running it through then leave it on 10 minutes and then rinse. It makes it so soft and smooth and pretty shiny!! hugs

There isn't any vodka smell at all. It acts as a preservative. There is a slight lemon scent, but it fades quickly. I just spray it on my dry hair before I head out to work in the yard. You'll really see the difference after you wash your hair. This formula can really lighten your hair up, so if you want to be a medium or dark blond, use sparingly.
If any brunettes try it, I hope you let us know how it works for you!

Sounds like a lovely cocktail, too! If you don't like the results on your hair, drink what's left in the bottle and you won't care about your hair anymore!

LOL! Jessie Mae! It's true!
But, really, this is an interesting recipe. I was thinking about an alternative to coloring my hair. I'll give it a try. If I don't turn out looking like a clown I will post the results. Ha!
