I just put my tomatoes in the raised bed and put up some sticks with string to keep the dog from "passing through". Problem was he didn't see the string...I took a bag from crackers that was shinny on the inside (mylar?) and cut it into strips, then stapled those on the string. Now it keeps dogs and birds away! Nifty; thrifty.

Alee, that's sad but also cute. They love to help out, don't they.
Any ideas to keep husbands out, too? Whenever mine gets near the gardens something bad happens. Things start to disappear. Things get whacked that aren't supposed to get whacked. He tills too close to things, too. So I get to do all the fun stuff now. Men tend to get a little too carried away in their enthusiasm when they get to doing all that man stuff. If a little's good then nothing at all is even better, right? I love their mentality.
I like the ideas to keep pets out. Good and thrifty.

My son loves those twirling flower things that twirl in the wind. Do yall know what I mean? The last one was only 2 for $1 and ended up been stuck in the yard at the edge of the flower bed. When that thing twirls it is so shiny scares of birds and we watched a squirrel make a mad dash when the wind started to blow suddenly . |

Kris, you made me laugh! My husband recently spread some mulch around for me, bless his haeart, but whilst at it, pulled up four Nandina (Heavenly Bamboo) bushes from amongst other foundation plantings bear our front porch, thinking they were weeds. EGAD! I rescused what I could of the carnage and wound up with two of the healthiest ones in new positions that look way better than before. He also pulled up several Heucheras (Coral Bells) for the same reason. They, too, got replanted in better spots than before. All's well that ends well.
Sometimes I think the guys do this kinda thing on purpose, just so we won't ask them to pitch in ever again! ;-) |

My favorite "cheap for the garden" item is , washmachine tubs, I remove them from dead washers and use them to plant my differant potatoes in, 1 plant per tub. I call the scraper to come pick-up the remains and it goes to the recycler. Mylar balloons are great shinners as well as old dvd's and cd's.

You gals with enthusiastic hubbies made me laugh! I have been dependent on my hubby to do the garden work since I hurt my back 3 weeks ago. I had tomato starts in gallon pots, and let him know some were getting to the size they needed to be planted. Only... he mixed them up! Some were one variety, and some another, and now I don't know which is which. He also dug out my Elecampane, thinking it was a weed. He chopped off half of it's valuable root, but I managed to spot it and he helped me put the rest of the plant in a safer raised bed.
THEN he mixed up the beans - I have bush beans and climbing beans, and I was specific about which was which - they're all together now, and the climbers have no pole and I've NO CLUE yet which ones they are! I'll find out soon enough. Then many young plants have been stepped on accidentally, or snapped, and he loves to blast them with the hose so hard the young ones flop over.
Plants are amazingly forgiving and no major harm done. I know they will breathe easier when I am in charge again! |
