Good Afternoon All!
After stumbling on MJF Magazine last year I knew I had found a magazine that truely spoke to me. I finally got around to joining the FG Connection. I Live in Longmont Colorado, married with two half grown children(20/23), two jack russells, 4 chickens and a parrot. Everyone who know's me agree's I was definately born in the wrong time and place. Although we live in town for now my "homestead" is something I love to work. I have a large garden, friut trees, vines and brambles. My hens are a recent addition as the city has finially come to thier senses and allowed backyard hens. I was thrilled and now am waiting on my first egg. Which should be anytime now. I have 2 Orpington's, 1 Australorp and 1 Fayuome. My husband and I love to watch "chicken tv" at the end of the day. Each year for the last 20 I have canned, frozen or dried everything we grow and what we forage for. I am so amazed how much fruit people let go to worms! We also make our own wine from fruits and believe it or not Beets! Some of my other interests are sewing, quilting, knitting, woodworking etc etc etc. I think my way of thinking is why buy when I can make it or grow it! Does that make me cheap? I'd like to think it makes me sensible and care about what my family has. I look forward to getting to know you all!

Welcome Heather, it is good to have you on board. I am sure you'll have plenty to share and to help with. The ladies here are nice and fun and we all tend to a better and more simple life. What are you working on in your sewing room ? Did you hear that MaryJane will have some farmgirl quilting fabrics in store soon ? I look forward to get to know you better. Corinne

Sounds like you have alot of the same interests as most of us! I sure don't think making or growing what you can instead of buying it makes you cheap..it makes you farmgirl smart!

Welcome Heather,
I thought the same thing when I found MJF magazine. Do you sell any of the things you grow. Check out our farmgirl co-op under chapter chatter.

Hi and Welcome, Heather!
I'm a relative newbie too and having so much fun here, hope you will too.
We would love to have chickens, but our city is not in agreement. We hope to move to a small town, where we know we can have up to 5 chickens in the town limits. Can't wait!
I'm a quilter too. I like 1930's reproduction fabrics, everything 3 Sisters(Moda) and Thimbleberries.
Looking forward to getting to know you, Joyce |

| Welcome Heather! You are girl after my own heart! I know just what you mean about seeing something and immediately thinking of a way to make it yourself. Cheap? Nah, it just makes you smart, I think! |

Welcome Heather, Your life sounds very interesting. We watch chicken tv too. Hope you have an egg by now. We have Rhode Island Reds, Black Australorp, Buff Orphingtons, and Barred Rock. I think we have about 25. You are so right about the fruit going to waste.
Hope to hear more from you.

A BIG welcome from a neighbor to your south. Littleton has not seen the light yet when it comes to chickens but they did just allow backyard bee keeping so I'm hoping chickens wont be far behind. How did your city come to allow chickens? Tell those people to come down to Littleton and do the same here!
Sounds like you'll fit in right fine on the forums. I look forward to getting to know you better!

Thank you to all for such a big farm girl welcome!
The heats been outrageous this last few days! Of course I know a lot of you ladies from the southern states are feeling it way worse. One of the nice things about Colorado is the lack of humidity. I remember visiting my grandmother as a child and the closer we got to the mississippi my hair would curl and frizz!
This weekend we spent the day taking out a HUGE stump. This thing did not want to move. 8 hours, two chain saw blades and many blisters later it finally gave up and came out of the hole! It was hard work but afterwards definately worth it. My son, husband and I had a mini bonding session......it always feels good when we work together on a project. The end result was a flat parking spot for my new project, a vintage travel trailer. I'd been thinking of doing something with one for a few years but when I saw the artcle on the "Sisters on the Fly" in MJF I started looking in ernest for just the right trailer. Like I need another project but hey life's short gotta do what makes you happy when the chance comes. I've been collecting vintage linens, stovetop percolators, cookware and dishes and intend to use some of them in the trailer. What's the name for that... oh yeah Glamping! Maybe it will get me to Idaho next year for the Farm Fair.
Can anyone steer me in the right direction on sweet potatoes? I'd like to try some next year in the garden. Are there some good short season varieties that would work well here (above 5000 feet).
Once again thanks for all the warm welcomes! Looking forward to getting to know you all better!
HUGS!!!
