My mother in law came for a visit and showed me a maryjane magazine and i fell head over heels for everything it stood for, i got home from their camp later that night and looked up the website and promptly signed up. I am a 29 yr old housewife, my husband and i moved from cape cod massachusetts (where i was born and raised) to gardiner maine to start a new life and buy a home. well we bought our first home, a very modest 3 bedroom on 1 1/4 acres of land with nothing but woods and apple trees behind us,we have been farming ever since! we have no children, but we have 3 dogs and 5 chickens, soon to be many more chickens and hopefully some goats next year! were in talks about fostering children and giving them the life they desreve, we live simple and not like most 29 and 34 yr old i know. we've also been married for almost 11yrs(oct. 24th will be the 11 yr mark) I am so happy to be part of this community and it is inspiring to me. Greetings to all you farmgirls

Well hello, Shayna and welcome from Ga. Sounds like you have a giid start on a small farm. I have chickens coming out the ears here! And guineas, too. Plus way too many goats and 2 cows. Plus dogs and cats all over. too. Just a zoo here! I was feeding the birds earlier and it's so funny how the guineas are inside the chicken yard and all the chickens are in the yard. That's how they eat breakfast. The guineas are just plain greedy birds. They chase the poor chickens off. Anyway, it's so neat to see all the chickens all over the yard.

I hope you enjoy it here. I love it myself.

Kris

Welcome! Congratulations on the 11 years of marriage. That's a pretty good stretch for a younger couple.
I think you'll really like the forum. The gals here are always so happy and helpful with knowledge or a *virtual* hug.
Good to meet you.

Welcome to the site! You will find that its so addicting. I love to get on here and just spend hours looking around for neat little ideas that are just so practical and the best part is when you have one of those questions that you want a real persons answer and not some search engines.... just post a new topic on here and you will get a good hearted answer!

Welcome Shayna:
Beautiful name! The first time I saw the Maryjane magazine, like you, I signed on and I've been posting since. I just love this place, and I'm sure you will too.

Welcome to the farm Shayna, I'm sure you'll just love it here! I've had chickens for four years, and this year we bought ducks and turkeys. Next spring we're getting three beef calves. I'm still trying to talk hubby into some goats or mini donkeys, but so far he's putting up a pretty good fight :) Do you do any quilting or embroidery? I'm still new to quilting, it's a learning adventure for me. It was nice meeting you.

Take care, Melissa.

Mrs. Dirt Doctor! I have been "daydreaming" of property in Gardiner, Maine for the last 10 years...Welcome to the Farm!!!

We have a 10 year plan (that looks like it's now going to be more like 15 or 20) to move to Maine, and the real estate website I ran across always has properties in Gardiner (that I LOVE).

Hope you enjoy it here, it's a wonderful, welcoming place and though we all stretch out for miles and miles, we have such similar interests, we seem like we're just next door :)

Wow! The welcomes are overwhelmingly wonderful and I can tell already that I will fit in perfect with all you farmgirl ladies :) Marly, thank you for the wonderful compliment. Karen and cheryl it is so nice to meet you, wonderful to meet you too as well Melissa and in response to your question, i haven't started quilting yet but we have such a wonderful quilting shop near me where the lady teaches lessons..and bonus, it's within walking distance!! Jonnie!! You would love Gardiner, I live in the heart of Gardiner but West Gardiner is where it's at, nothing but country and cheap cheap cheap real esate!! we bought our modest 3 bedroom country home for 100,000 with 1 1/4 acre of land, we moved from cape cod massachusetts where the housing market was sooo much money. our home isn't the biggest but we opted for land over house, If you ever make it this way let me know so we can have tea or coffee and talk farmgirl talk. wonderful to meet you all. i'm blessed for finding this site

That's exactly what I was noticing, Shayna...and the tax structure in ME is very much like it is here, in Kentucky. Same sales tax, reasonable property taxes, etc...sortof offsets the cost of heating oil :)

I'm so glad you're here! And thanks for the invite...if and when we make it up that way, we can table talk the days away...and I can meet Karin, too!!!

Shayna, I live in Belmont, which is out back of Belfast. It is a very small town. I grew up in Searsport, but I never knew Belmont existed until I was an adult. We will definitely have to get together for a cup of joe one of these days...Gardiner is a sweet little town....And of course Jonni, if you are everin the neighborhood, let me know. Wouldn't that be fun.

Jonnie, I've always wanted to visit the south, Kentucky sounds wonderful and the idea of living in Kentucky seems so appealing, unfortunately I have never left New England. LOL, I gotta get out more..It's definitely a place where young couples can make it. I know a lot of places are closing everywhere and people are getting laid off but they seem to keep building stores and restaurants here in Maine, my husband runs a brand new restaurant that they opened in Augusta(which is just a stone throw away) about the oil, we throw diesel in our tank and keep it turned off, we turn it on and let it heat up when we need it..hoping to get a woodstove this fall... It's so wonderful to meet you!!

Kentucky really is a beautiful state, Shayna. I guess that's why I didn't leave when I originally decided on moving to Maine 9 years ago...well, that and I met my husband :) When I think of Maine, it's exactly as you describe--I could see us making it there, and hey, my husband is a fine dining server, so if your husband ever needs a good server...:)

I'd love to talk further about it. Email me through the forum sometime, and again, Welcome!

Where is Gardiner? (gee that was my moms maiden name!)

I lived in Bangor for about 5-years on the old air force base there.
Went back many, many years ago and stayed near Camden. I decided long ago that Camden is where I am heading out to once the chicks have left the nest.... Lucky. I would give anything to be in Maine right now! Welcome to the Forum!

Welcome Shayna!!!

I am so glad you found us here. You will love it for sure! I grew up in Western MA and when I was a kid we would vacation in Belfast (or the Cape). I sure love Maine, the ocean, the weathered cottages, the Clam Chowder!

I look forward to getting to know you better Shayna:)
