We have almost five acres of bottom land near the river and live close to one of the bridges that was featured in Clint Eastwood's movie. Before we moved closer to town three years ago, we lived a mile from another one of the bridges, quite a rural setting near an ancient cemetery. It was the place that really sparked my desire for the farm girl life. My landlord wasn't too keen on the chickens idea, so I set my mind to finding a place specifically where I could raise chickens and sell free-range eggs. I now have it and enjoy it.

Sounds so pretty. I've always wanted to visit there and see all of the neat bridges.
What kind of chickens do you have? I love to watch mine roam, chase bugs and such. They are a delight! We have Buff Orpingtons. They are big and a beautiful gold color.. Very tame and easy to work with.
Welcome!

welcome Amy and Kathy to the forum. glad to have you both here. I have never seen that movie, may need to now. I just moved to town, but found out I can have chickens too. Will wait till Spring as I have to many projects going on. My street name is Wyandotte, and farmgirl Alee, told my there are chickens with that name. Will be looking for a place I can order them. Will have to check with the local feed and seed. See ya round!

For tomorrow and its needs I do not pray, but keep me, guide me, love me, Lord just for today.

Welcome Amy from a former Iowa girl now living in Wisconsin. I loved that movie so much. I'm originally from the Grinnell and Marshalltown areas. My family still live in Iowa so I do get to go home now and then. I miss my Iowa chops most of all..LOL

Welcome, Amy. I was in Winterset just year ago this weekend, visited the bridges on our way to Nebraska. We loved Iowa, it was a pleasant surprise for us - different than what we expected - Not quite as flat as some of the surrounding states...

Welcome AmyBeth!

I grew up in Iowa, moved away for a bit and then back to the Winterset area for a year for my husbands job. Winterset is such a nice little town, I enjoyed living there.

Hope you like it here on the forum, lots of nice gals :)

Merry-

Hey, you may actually be neighbors with my parents who live in Ankeny. They don't quite appreciate rural living as I do, and they probably never thought a city girl would end up down in the valley with racoons, opposum, and fox to deal with. Those critters do love the chickens and their eggs.

Your folks live in Ankeny? If we lived in the south, that would almost make us family!

I love Winterset and that whole area, beautiful acreages out there, and yes lots of little wild critters! Gotta keep a close eye on your hen-girls!

Oh yeah, winterset has that great Ben Franklin and fons and porter! I also think your town square is lovely.

Hi from another girl from Iowa, I have been to Winterset and enjoyed the unique bridges. It is a lovely town. My husband likes John Wayne so we visited the house he grew up in. I live near Cedar Rapids and Iowa City so we are also Iowa neighbors. I loved the movie also. I am a meryl streep fan. The prettiest time to visit Iowa, I think, is in the fall when the leaves turn.

Happiness is having
farmgirl friends.

Welcome! How wonderful to have found a farm. Now, a question - how do you keep your free range hens from laying in spots other than the hen house? Ours are laying all over and we are not able to find them.
Again, welcome!
Warm wishes,
Tonya

Hi Amy,
Welcome to the forums. I live in Kansas City,MO,so if there is something you need brought up from KC just let me know. I visit N. E. Iowa every other weekend to play on the farm .
I pass right by Winterset and Ankeny for the Ankeny girls.. I can deliver.
I have picked up craigslist items for friends buying stuff in Waterloo, IA. It is a hoot to meet so many nice people in Iowa.
I love the country farm life.
