I finally made it here! So much to look at and read. I didn't know where to begin, so I thought I'd start here.
I just moved to a small place in North Louisiana about 15 miles from Grayson and 45 miles south of Monroe. Pretty much in the middle of nothing but timber company lands. We only have about 4 acres where we live and another 15 down the road. Still in the building and renovating an 8o+ year old family homeplace and barns. I raise, show, & milk Nubian dairy goats and have a small flock of various breeds of chickens. My chickens are split up right now being taken care of by my mom in TX and a friend. I love the variety of colored eggs, especially green!!
I grew up all over, my father being in the Pipeline business, I lived in South America, Columbia, where my mom was born, and clear up to Quebec, Canada. My father was from a Swedish family and raised in Minnesota. I have a 21 year old daughter that lives in Ft Worth, TX, about 30+goats split up right now here and in TX, about a dozen chickens, one dog, and lots of wildlife!
I don't have any close friends here and have had little time to meet anyone close to where I'm at. I am still in the Pipeline business but want to make my own business with my goats so I can stay in one place for good. We plan to grow our own food and perhaps go solar soon too. Everything in time of course. I'm excited about finding this site and hope to meet some new exciting Farm Girls friends to share ideas, interests and life long friendships.
Looking forward to chatting with you all!
Have a wonderful day!!

Welcome Sylvia. What beautiful goats. I have 1 Nubian and 3 Lamanchas that I am milking right now. Well, I am drying up the oldest lamancha. I love goat milk. I talked to a guy the other day in Chattanooga that sells goat cheese at a market there. I asked him what all it takes to start a goat dairy to sell the milk and cheese and he said about $300,000.00 to start with. I guess I'll keep doing it under the table. I would like to sell for pet consumption only, but that is not much less to get started. And all the inspectors all the time. No, I guess not. I hope you get all yours back together soon. They sure are pretty. And good luck with the building and moving.

Kris

Hi Sylvia, Welcome from N.E.Oh! We had Nubians when I was growing up. I had digestive trubles, and gramps said that they were the perfect remedy.I'm happy to say ...they were...and you're right, they have a great disposition and were fun to have around. You're gonna love these gals too ;), they're a great bunch! Enjoy! Hugs&Squeezles! Judy

Sylvia,

Do you know where Winnsboro is? My mom lived there for a year in the mid-1940s and my friend, daughter, and I visited there in 2006 on our way from Little Rock/Memphis to Houston.

Welcome!

Thanks so much for all the warm welcomes! I can't wait to explore all the areas of this forum.
It's raining again, seems like there's no end but wishing you all very nice day! Oh and yes Karin I have been to Winnsboro several times.
Oh and Kris, I check with the local inspectors and invite them to your place. Then ask them what do you need to do to be a Grade A facility. It's depends on the inspector really. I know some people that went Grade A in Houston area that is all in an open barn on concrete with a 3 compartment sink, and with run off to the side of the Barn?? but it worked for them and they are grade A. It's a real nice set up but it didn't cost them much.
Blessings to all!

Welcome from N.C. from one newbie to another. We had a mix of Alpines,Saanen and Nubian. We had one Nubian named Pansy and she could reach a chain light we had in the barn and would turn the light off n on..such characters they can be. lol

Make my words soft and tender, for I may have to eat them. :)
